Mr. Hawkins, the headmaster, stopped Anna one day at the school gate.
"Now," he said, "I want you to tell me the 1, my dear." Feeling something terrible had happened, Anna said slowly, "2."
"I have had a most 3 accusation(投诉) made against you by Mrs. Bond."
"Mrs. Bond?" said Anna, not understanding. Janet Bond was a quiet little 4 of a child. As far as Anna could remember she had never had 5 to speak an angry word to the girl.
"Mrs. Bond," went on Mr. Hawkins, "told me that you scolded (责备) her daughter yesterday afternoon."
"Scolded?" cried Anna. " I certainly didn't do that. 6 not in school." She added honestly.
Mrs. Bond's 7 is that Janet was a little late back to school in the afternoon. She said she set out from home a little late.
"Just a minute." said Anna, beginning to 8. "She did come late, very late. I had marked her 9, of course. Then she 10 slowly in, when we'd started our paper-cutting, and I believe I said she was a nuisance (讨厌). She didn't appear to hear, and was certainly quite 11."
"A nuisance!" Mr. Hawkins couldn't 12 it and asked, "You are sure you said nuisance?"
"I may not even have said that." Anna replied, "I was not angry at all at that moment- 13 I certainly didn't scold."
"Mrs. Bond said that you called her child a 'nuisance'. Is that true?"
"Indeed it isn't." said Anna. "The child-or the other-had 14 it up!"
After Anna's explanation, Mr. Hawkins felt 15. "Just as I thought, my dear, but of course I had to make sure."
_______________________________ Researchers played loud music inside a cage of hungry mosquitoes. Meanwhile, other mosquitoes were kept in a silent cage. A hamster was put in each cage. The mosquitoes that were forced to listen to loud music sucked less blood than those in the silent cage. If noise makes them find it hard to focus, it could be used to help stop them from feeding on humans and therefore stop the spread of diseases. |

What do pets think? Have you wondered what your dogs are feeling? A new app called Happy Pets can tell you this. The app uses AI to analyze the facial expressions of dogs. Then it can tell you how the dog is feeling. To master this skill, the AI program "saw" and "read" thousands of example images. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a dog's body to make its readings more accurate(准确的). |

Smile in the cat way Many cat owners argue that it is quite difficult to please their cats. Cats have a bit of a name for coldness. Research shows that you just need to smile at them more in the cat way: by narrowing your eyes and blinking slowly. The expression is translated as a kind of cat smile. Jackson, a cat behavior expert, says there are some pretty strong feelings behind the cat slow blink. He calls it the "I love your blink". |

People all over the world use colorful little squares of paper to help them remember something. Some people even use them to create works of art: These little squares are called Post-it Notes. One of their creators, Spencer Silver, recently passed away at 80.
Silver first started working on the notes in 1968, when he was working for technology company 3M. He discovered a kind of weak glue (胶) that didn't leave behind any residue (残留物) when it was taken off. ★ But he and his partner Art Fry came up with the idea of putting the glue on small pieces of paper to create notes that could be easily moved from one place to another. They borrowed some yellow paper and went to work on their creation The Post-it Note was finally born in 1974.
However, it wasn't brought to market until 1977 and didn't really take off until 1980. Today, it is one of 3M's best-selling things. The company makes more than 50 million Post-it Notes every year. Silver, a creative chemist, had 37 inventions during his time at 3M. He was included into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his achievements.
These days, Post-it Notes are made in many different colors. sizes and shapes, including fruit and animals. They are useful for many things. You can use them to take notes, mark your place in a book, give someone a reminder, or even ask someone to a dance. You can even see them in the Museum of Modem Art in New York.
Xiong Linghao was born on May 29th, 2002 in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. She lost her eyesight because of illness when she was only two months old. But her mother later found that Xiong had a talent for music. She could play children's songs on a small electric (电子的) piano when she was 3 years old. At the age of 6, she started learning the piano.
Unlike most learners, Xiong could not see the piano keyboard (琴键), so she must remember where each key is through its sound. That was very hard for her. She practiced for six to eight hours every day so that she could find the right keys.
Xiong's piano skill was getting better and better as she kept practicing. In 2020, she won the Special Jury Prize in an international youth piano competition in Shanghai. "The piano is my best friend," said Xiong. It brings so much pleasure into my life and encourages me to face my life bravely."
Xiong has a great dream. She wants to be a great musician like Beethoven. Beethoven lost his hearing in his 20s and later went completely deaf, but he didn't give up his love for music. He wrote so many famous music works in his life. So for herself, Xiong still has a long way to go.

When I was ten years old, my teacher once asked me to make a speech titled "A Real Test in My Life". Just how terrible nervous I was at that moment. To talk in front of the whole class meant many eyes would focus upon me! I felt (real) worried.
I had no other (choice). So I was to draft (起草) the speech. That was just a piece of cake for me, because I was a good writer. But the hard part lay in my oral presentation(口头陈述): to read the paper was not allowed. I had to give the speech from my memory and in front of so many people!
A real test b when I stood on the platform(站台), with my legs trembling and my mind blank(空白). How much time had p by, I didn't know. I tried to cmyself. My listeners were still (wait) for me, without any signs of rushing me. Gradually I began to give out my speech, with great difficulty
It seemed to be a hundred years. When I finished, I was sto find my audience cheering for me. I made it!
Now I am a great speaker. Looking back, I learned a lot: sometimes we get into tjust because of fear, overcome it, then we will succeed .
