Every year thousands of people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road. Most of these people are old people and children. Old people often get hurt or die because they can't see or hear very well. Children usually meet with accidents because of their carelessness. They forgot to look and listen before they cross the road.
How can we lessen (减少) traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they shouldn't drive too fast. If they drive too fast it will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For the pedestrians (行人) it's very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements. We must stop and look both ways before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, we can cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It's not safe to run quickly. If people run across the road, they may fall down. Students should try to help children, old people or blind people to cross the road and never play in the street.
Tea and coffee are two of the most popular drinks in the world. However, people usually like one more than the other. These drinks also have very different uses.
Tea drinking started in China over 4,000 years ago. Tea is made from leaves. These days, some people drink tea for health, using it to help with stress (压力) or losing weight. However, most people in tea-drinking countries think of tea as more than just a healthy drink. In fact, tea drinking in some countries is a part of the culture. In Turkey (土耳其), Tea is always there when people meet. Whether in someone's home or a company, tea is always offered as a way of welcoming. In the UK, homes and offices usually have tea time. Tea and other dishes are served at tea time in the afternoon. It is a way of relaxing with friends or co-workers (同事).
Coffee came much later than tea, just over 1,000 years ago. Coffee is made from beans. Something in the coffee beans makes a person feel active. Most people do not drink coffee to relax. Instead, they drink coffee to get going. Many people drink coffee in the morning to help them wake up. Others will also drink coffee during short breaks in the afternoon to keep going through the working day. Some people may visit coffee shops just to meet and talk with friends. However, many people in coffee shops drink coffee while working on their computers.
Is tea or coffee more common in your country? Between the two, which do you like to drink more?
Dear Mike,
I'm sorry to hear that you have trouble in your reading tests. And I have some good ideas about reading to share with you.
Firstly, find a quiet place to read. A comfortable chair and warm temperature in it are enough. As for your smartphone, computer and TV, please keep away from them. Or you will fail to focus on (集中于) your book.
Secondly, review (复习) your teacher's questions. Before reading, you must know why you read the book, so please read the questions carefully. If you meet new words, you can use a dictionary. But try to guess their meaning instead of using it during reading.
Thirdly, read the introduction of the book before reading. Normally, the introduction covers the main idea of a book. If you catch it before reading, you will understand the book better.
Fourthly, read and take a break to think. If you start to think after finishing the whole book, you may miss some important information. The best way is to finish part of the book, and stop to think about it.
Finally, take notes as you read. Each time you stop to think, also make a note of what you have read. And you can review it carefully when you prepare for tests.
If you follow my suggestions, I'm sure next time you will get a better reading grade.
Yours,
Min

pain instrument total perform piece pity play bad sad praise |
Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving of music that I've ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 93. His mother died when he was very young. Abing's father taught him to play many musical , such as the drums, dizi and erhu, and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing's life grew . He was very poor. Not only that, he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He in this way for many years
Abing's amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a that only six pieces of music in were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day. Today, Abing's Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and . It has become one of China's national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a picture of Abing's own life but also makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own sad or experiences.
