I've always dreamed of traveling the world, but like so many others, I ended up on choosing to follow a career path instead of following my dream. I founded a company that I loved. Everything changed when I broke up with my girlfriend.
Sadness pushed me to my breaking point. It took me around three months after the break-up to finally make the decision to leave and travel the world. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done, but it was also the best choice I ever made in my life.
To this day, I still remember the day I called my parents, who are also deaf, to discuss my plans to travel the world. Both of my parents gave me their full support. They told me to go ahead and helped book my flight to Thailand.
I chose Southeast Asia as my first, and I was fortunate to spend it with my good friend Mic Dolan. We spent about six weeks backpacking through Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, having fun with tiger cubs and riding elephants. There was a new adventure every day. We paused long enough in Thailand to get certified in scuba diving, which turned out to be my favorite part. After that trip, I flew to Europe to meet another friend, John Hathaway. In this part of the journey, John and I turned our travels into a full-time adventure and we shared all of our stories on the Vlog platform Seek The World.
Showing the people that I met and my readers who I am makes me more confident with-what I want for my life. After meeting many deaf people, I realized that I have done one thing that everybody wants to do: I'm reaching my dream by breaking down communication barrier (障碍) and overcoming different challenges. I always find a way. And I always make things happen. I didn't do that in the past; I'm grateful that I do now.
In today's world, cultural heritage—a term Yale University President Peter Salovey referred to as "the record of humanity"—is increasingly under attack by threats ranging from climate change, theft, mass tourism, and war. Historic buildings, works of art, traditions, and even local languages are disappearing at an increasingly rapid rate.
Yale is leading a new organization, the Global Consortium for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (GCPCH), to work on the preservation of cultural heritage. The first official meeting of the organization took place in Milan, Italy, which gathered 36 international university officials and experts from around the world to determine next steps for advancing GCPCH's mission(使命).
During the meeting, experts and officials determined that the mission of GCPCH is to share knowledge and to promote relationships between the parties that seek to protect various forms of cultural heritage worldwide. More specifically, GCPCH will create a map of education programs and field experiences, research projects, and funding sources.
The two-day meeting of GCPCH was hosted by Bocconi University. It kicked off with an address by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. "Knowledge-sharing gets all stakeholders (有利益关系者) involved at a global level, "said Bokova in her inspiring speech. "Together we need to strengthen the networks and build more bridges between all actors."
Stefano Baia Curioni, vice-president of ASK Research Center of Bocconi University, commented on what an honor it was for Bocconi to host the meeting. "It is with great pleasure that we gather such a set of leaders who bring so many valuable points of view on challenges related to the preservation of cultural heritage," Baia Curioni said. "We know how important the work of this body is to advancing our collective work, and are honored to support such efforts. "
Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now. TikTok. These social media platforms have changed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic innovation (革新), it's really full of hidden false realities.
The median income (中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63, 000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50, 000 to $150, 000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30, 000 a month—$360, 000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads simply by posting a 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid "job", it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent; money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it's important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we're constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethnics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthdays and family holidays due to their jobs and aren't getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers?
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc, had his own view on this issue. "It sounds great that kids can make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good; technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it is only online. "
Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I'm not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous by posting a 15-second video teach young people?
Is there anything more important than health? I don't think so. ""wise people say.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. The only thing you have to do is follow his advice.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: "Eat at pleasure, drink at pleasure and enjoy life as it is." The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn't smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor's office. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
"But you know, doctor" he said, "it's not easy to begin smoking at my age."
A. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks.
B. You can't be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
C. After that he will advise some treatment or some medicine.
D. Health is the greatest wealth.
E. He looked cheerful and happy.
F. He was more worried about his illness.
G. Speaking about doctor's advice, I can't help telling you a funny story
Although Cuban built a tech company that would finally make him extremely rich, he never showed off that. "I never, ever thought about1," he said. Instead, Cuban said his drive was something else2. I couldn't agree more with Cuban's views. A person's life is short. We should make the best use of time to do meaningful things, so that we won't15a thing before death.
