I couldn't miss the old lady with a black umbrella. Her shoes and socks were 1 . I could tell that she was very cold. I 2  to offer her a ride (搭便车). 

Of course, she felt a little shy at first, but she got 3 my warm car when I asked again. I 4 her to the hospital — it was only a few minutes out of my way. By the time she had got out of my car, she smiled and 5 me. I was late for work that day, 6 I was glad that I had stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the 7 of a new habit (习惯).

Whenever I'm driving in 8  weather and see someone waiting at a bus stop, I'll ask if he or she needs 9 . Once, a young doctor jumped in. She felt 10  after working all day and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. I could help someone. It felt good. 

The best part about my offers of rides is the conversations that come out of them. I often ask a lot of questions. Surprisingly, everyone wants to 11  others. I've learned a lot from my elderly (年长的) passengers. They are full of stories about 12  old days at the office, and so on. I often feel sad 13  they get out of my car, because the stories are just getting started. 

My husband keeps telling me that I should 14  pick up strangers. I don't think so. If I stand at the bus stop, I think you are willing to giving me the 15  of a short ride. Everyone should have a habit of reaching out a hand, so I don't see those at a bus stop as strangers.

Here is a photo of Pablo Picasso drawing with his daughter Paloma. It shows why I like this great artist so much. At that moment, they were lost in what they were doing. In fact, her freedom was what he was looking for in his work. 

Last October. I saw a wonderful show of Picasso's drawings in New York. Maybe, because he thought himself a painter first, he was freer to play with art. The artworks make us think of Picasso's famous word, "Every child is an artist. The problem (问题) is how to remain an artist when we grow older. "

Part of my job as a writer and artist is to go into schools and read my stories to children. I also draw with them. Every time, I'm surprised in their drawings. These children draw after me. However, their drawings always make mine seem lifeless. Children draw whatever they feel. They just put it out there. For me, I always worry about what others think and put a limit (限制) on myself. 

I've been working with a school for a few years. I see six-year-olds expressing (表达) themselves freely in their drawings. However, when they leave at the age of eleven, too many of them feel worried about the act of drawing. They learn that there is a "right" way to draw, and a "wrong" way. There isn't. It is important that you do it and that you express yourself through it. 

Picasso painted with few limits to express himself. He shows us all parts of life - light and dark, its problems and happiness. Maybe this is why his artworks are popular. 

Is my home a "smart house" or a "confusing maze (迷宫)"？ Different people look at it in different ways. For me, changing the temperature in the living room is easy. I only need to say, "Hey Siri, set the living room to 22℃. " For my wife, however, it means having to take the time to find an app first. 

My home has two smart air-conditioners, one smart TV and many smart LED lights. I am excited every time when I tell a smart assistant to turn off the lights. But my wife has no interest in new technology. Turn on or off the lights? A finger will do. 

Is such a smarter home more convenient (方便的)？ Is saying "Siri, watch the news on TV" easier than turning the TV on? At first sight, it seems so. However, in everyday practice, I have to say that sometimes, it just isn't needful. 

After living in my smart home for three years, technology has become an important part in my life. But sometimes, ____. For example, if my Wi-Fi goes down for even a moment, my "smart home" won't work. If there is a power failure. well, forget about anything "smart". 

My smart LED lights promised to save money by learning when I'm home and turning on the lights only when they're needed. But that hasn't happened. In the first place, each of the smart LED light cost me a lot of money. What's more, I haven't seen any change in my electricity (电) usage. 

Is a smarter home a better home? This is a question I have asked myself many times now. 

Sorry, I haven't written till now. Since I got here, I've been very busy taking classes and making new friends. We all  (说) English but I'm learning about other languages and countries too. We're a real mix of nationalities: Chinese,  (俄罗斯语)， Thai, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian. . 

My host family are  (真地) nice. The children are called Lewis and Amy. They're both in primary school and are very sweet but they can be a bit  (厌倦的) too. If I have to watch the film Frozen with them  (数个) times, I'm going to go crazy! I know all the songs by heart now. 

We live pretty near the school so I walk there every day. It's only a short bus ride from Edinburgh city (中心)， and there are loads of shops and cafes there. There's an ancient castle too and we (遇见) some of our new friends on a school trip last week. Edinburgh is a (完美的) place to be an I there's a festival on at the moment. It's wonderful but bit expensive for us students, so we've been hanging out in the streets watching the free street performances from actors and (音乐家). Yesterday I saw a magician doing card tricks —it was so much (娱乐)!

When my children were younger, we used to walk a graveled trail (碎石小道) around the lake near our home. 

One spring day, my daughter and I  (notice) litter was here and there, lying along the trail. So the next day we brought a big bag with us and started to (slow) pick up the litter along the way. There were empty  (bottle), pop cans, plastic bags, pieces of broken fishing line. We stopped and picked up each one and even found  old shoe in water. 

Sometimes this world's problems can seem big and you want (do) what you can do to change the world. But in fact, everything you do is (use)! Every flower you plant, every animal you save, every thing you do, no matter how small, (make) a difference in the future. 

By the time we had circled the lake, the bag was nearly full. We stopped before we headed home and looked  the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever. 

Exhausted but happy, we put the bag in an empty waste bin and returned home. 

April 23 is World Book Day, started by UNESCO to make more people like reading. On that day, everyone is encouraged to pick up a book, sit quietly for a few hours, and just read. Twenty-eight years ago, World Book Day first began.  Today, because of our smartphones and other electronic devices, many of us are finding it difficult to focus on anything for more than a few minutes at a time. 

One study I saw compared the reading level of 13-year-olds a hundred years ago to 13-year-olds today.  Another study found that, just a few years ago, 37% of people thought that it was interesting to read, but that number has now dropped to 17%. 

I've always thought of books-real books, printed on paper - to be my friends.  And I would love the book and allow myself to jump into another world. A good book, such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, would make me so happy that I was sad to have it end. 

And I find that the books I enjoy the most are those that were written hundreds or even thousands of years ago. For example, China's "Four Books and Five Classics" were written before the Qin dynasty. We don't have to read all of these books, but even reading just some of them will give us a better understanding (理解) of Chinese culture.  On World Book Day or any day, pick up a book and sit quietly for a few hours and read. You may just find a new friend.
