When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka, Malaysia with my parents and two brothers. 1 we were poor, we lived happily. The Lin family, living in the bicycle shop opposite our house, had an even 2 life.
Mr. Lin, the bicycle repairman, had six children. He couldn't buy new clothes and get enough food for them. His children were always dressed in old clothes and looked very 3 . My father was kind-hearted. He ran a grocery store (食品杂货店). He 4 took whatever food we could spare to Mr. Lin.
To make more money, Mr. Lin started selling second-hand 5 in his shop. He worked very hard. As time 6 , the number of customers in his shop increased and a lot of bicycles were sold out. The business in his shop got better and better.
It was at this time that my father fell ill for no clear reason. My mother took him to see doctors many times, but he didn't get better. Even worse, the business in the grocery store was in danger of failing. And one of us children had to stop schooling because we could not 7 the fees (费用).
Mr. Lin knew about our difficulties and came to help. He introduced my father to a famous doctor. And not long, the doctor healed (治愈) my father. Mr. Lin also raised money to support 8 education.
Thanks to Mr. Lin, things got better. Whenever I met up with Mr. Lin, I would thank him 9 his help. Mr. Lin said with a big smile, "I'm just repaying (回报) the 10 that your father has shown me."

Firecrackers have a history of more than 2,000 years. It is said that people burnt bamboo joints (竹节) to make it blast (爆炸) to drive away the beast named Nian in ancient China. Firecrackers are still set off during the Spring Festival to stand for hope and luck. |

During ancient times, the closest thing to watching a movie or TV was watching a shadow play (皮影戏). People control puppets behind the screen while singing with music to tell a story. Shadow play was listed as national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2006. |
You may receive lots of gifts on your birthday. But have you ever thought about giving your birthday gifts to people in need? Kyle Breeden, a 12-year-old boy from Maryland, USA, has done that ever since he was six years old. On November 19th every year, Kyle invites his friends to his birthday celebration. He asks each friend to bring a new toy to donate (捐赠) to Toys for Tots.
Toys for Tots is a project which gives out toys to children whose parents cannot usually buy them toys. Kyle has donated more than 2,000 toys to the project. And he plans to continue collecting toys for other kids for years to come.
When Kyle was five, he asked his parents how he could help others. Kyle's parents were excited to hear that and they helped him get in touch with Toys for Tots. From then on, he has looked forward to his birthday, but only to get toys. Then he collects the toys and goes to the Toys for Tots celebrations to donate them.
John Minadakis, who hosted a Toys for Tots celebration, said he had never seen someone give so much at such a young age. He believed the ability to put others before himself could take the boy far in life.
Kyle feels good when he helps others. He hopes that through his example, other kids will be inspired to give back. "Many people around my age don't have toys to play with. I want to do something," Kyle said. "Even the smallest toy can make a kid's day."
Astronauts would face dangers both getting to and surviving (生存) on Mars. Let's learn about surviving a trip to Mars.
What would it take to keep people safe and healthy on a trip to Mars? Scientists are already working on it though the trip may be many years later.
Over the last 60 years, many spacecraft (航天器) have flown by, orbited (沿轨道运行) and even landed on the Red Planet. However, humans could work faster and smarter than machines. That's why the United States, China and other countries want to send people to Mars. But surviving this trip would not be easy.
A trip to Mars would be the farthest journey in human history. Mars is about 225 million kilometers away, so it would take astronauts at least six months to reach there. However, it only takes a few days to get to the moon.
While space travel is never free of danger, it takes a lot more health risks to travel in space for a long time. For one thing, staying in space for long periods makes the human body weak. Also, it puts pressure behind the eyes and causes eye problems. But gravity (重力) machines could help.
Then there's space radiation (辐射) to worry about. It might raise the risk of health problems. especially for astronauts who will have long journeys. Scientists are working out the problems. They have found taking certain vitamins (维生素) can help.
Astronauts will have to pack light to lift off from Earth. But they won't be able to get things they need like astronauts on the space station do. Astronauts on the space station practice for this by growing lettuce and other food in space. Engineers are developing 3-D printing techniques which could allow future Mars astronauts to build tools as needed.

Cheng Feng is a teacher. However, to many of her students, the 33-year-old teacher is more than that. Cheng's care for her students has made her "a mother" to them.
Over the past years, Cheng has gone into the mountains and worked in several poor schools in Poyang to help village children.
Right after graduation in 2011, Cheng became a teacher at Tutang Primary School in Youcheng Town of Poyang. Over the following four years, she did well at her job there.
Beitang Primary School is a poor school far away from her home. When Cheng found out it was on going to close because of a lack (缺少) of teachers, she decided to give up her life at Tutang Primary School and go there.
After arriving there, she learned that because of the poor educational conditions, many local parents had sent their children to schools further away. Cheng tried her best to encourage seventeen students to return. She called upon her college classmates to offer a helping hand. To make the students' life more colorful, Cheng learned music, sports and art courses online and then taught the students. As things got well at Beitang Primary School, Cheng went to Siwanghu Primary School.
Cheng's husband is 35 years old. He always supports Cheng's choice. He has also served as a teacher in Poyang over the years.
"We should help the children to see further and dream bigger." Cheng says.

Once in a physics class, the teacher asked students, "Why do we have brakes (刹车) in our cars?" Soon, students gave different answers. A student up and replied, "Sir, to stop the car." Another one said, "To reduce and control the speed of the car."
However, of the answers was the same as the teacher's. Then he said, "All of your answers are right. But in my opinion, the brakes in the car make us able to drive much ."
"If the car has no brakes, how fast are we ready to drive? It is the brakes in the car that give us to drive fast and safely." Listening to this, the whole class was because no one had imagined this answer.
Similarly, there are many such "brakes" in our life, which seem to stop us. For example, our parents may ask about progress or decisions in life. Their or suggestions may be considered as "brakes" which stand in our way. But we can see them as our supporters which can us while taking risks. Sometimes, we have to stop or even step back, so that we can take a big step.
In fact, it is the "brakes" in life that help us a lot. these "brakes", we could lose our direction or get into danger. So we need to understand that "brakes" in our life are not meant to push us back to make us move forward more quickly than before.
