Many artists draw with pens and brushes, but few "paint" with knives. Wang Jing, a woman from Shenyang city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, has been engaged in this art form for 27 years.
In 1995, Wang was inspired by an accidental cut by a knife on a piece of red paper, which left a white line, and believed that she may have created something out of the ordinary. Using knives and paper, she then completed a painting of a pair of peacocks that later became a source of motivation for her 27-year endeavor.
Unlike traditional paintings, onto which colors are "added", "knife painting" requires the painter to use blades (刀锋) to take away colors on specially made coated paper. "Knife painters" apply varied pressure on the paper in different directions to create different colors and tones. "Painting on paper with knives is a delicate art and each line in the painting is as thin as a hair," said Wang, adding that once the marks are left on the paper, they cannot be covered, so it requires the painter to be completely absorbed in the work.
The novel art form was known to few people just after Wang created it. Even Wang herself was not expecting to make it something big at the beginning. But thanks to her huge enthusiasm for the art form, she has persisted with it for the past 27 years. So far, she has completed hundreds of paintings about auspicious Chinese culture, figures, landscape, flowers and birds, of which her favorite is a 2.8-meter-long painting that depicts 20 lifelike egrets (白鹭). Wang said she will continue working in the craft and make it known across the world.
A colourful material made from wood cools down even when under direct sunlight, meaning it could be used to decorate the outside of buildings while lowering their internal temperature without the need for air conditioning.
Most materials warm up when exposed to sunlight because they absorb a combination of light. But some have a cooling effect because they reflect these wavelengths instead and on top of that also give off some of the warmth within the material through the atmosphere into space.
Adding colors to such a material normally increases the amount of light it absorbs, but Silvia Vignolini at the University of Cambridge and her colleagues have now found a way to make versions in red, green or blue that have a cooling effect and the key ingredient comes from wood, in the form of two types of cellulose (纤维素).
The chemicals in cellulose are particularly good for giving off the right kind of light to have a cooling effect, while cellulose nanocrystals (纳米晶体)—which can be got from sources such as wood or cotton—produce different colors. This effect is similar to how soap bubbles show colors on their surface by spreading different wavelengths of light in different directions.
Vignolini and her colleagues combined these features by layering the nanocrystals on top of a highly reflective sheet (层) made from a kind of cellulose.
By adjusting the arrangement of the nanocrystals, they produced versions of this material in red, green and blue, and found they were on average 3℃ cooler than the surrounding temperature in daylight.
This early version is promising, but the coloured layer is sensitive to environmental effects like weather, says Vignolini, so more work is needed to make it a practical decoration. "Going from here to an application on a wall or on a device, you would need to have it stable enough," she says.
In spring, Yatir, a human-made forest planted in the 1960s by JNF, a non-profit land development agency, on the northwest edge of the Negev Desert, bursts with new life. Pink and yellow wildflowers carpet the forest floor; camels, horses, foxes, rabbits, and snakes all survive here.
The trees are neither watered nor fertilized (施肥), and yet somehow the forest has survived for almost 60 years. "Yatir Forest proves that we can combat desertification, and heal the wounded earth," the JNF website says. "For us, Yatir is a laboratory where we study the forest's effect on climate," says Rotenberg, who joined the project in 2000. "What we learn now about Yatir will be serving a warmer, dryer world in many regions."
Fifteen years' worth of measurements in Yatir, beginning in 2001, do show that the forest takes up a surprising amount of carbon — as much as forests in more humid areas. Semi-dry shrub (灌木丛) and grasslands cover nearly a fifth of the planet's land; if they all were planted with trees, the Yatir results suggest, they might absorb around 10 percent of current fossil fuel emissions.
Not everyone is happy about that. The SPNI, for example, opposes further planting of trees in naturally unforested open spaces such as grasslands and shrublands. In a 2019 report, the SPNI claims that afforestation in sensitive ecosystems has a destructive impact on this area's unique biodiversity. "I love trees," says Alon Rothschild, head of biodiversity policy at the SPNI, "but you don't have to stick them in every place."
Planting forests in such places excludes native species that are adapted to shrubland, he says, including endangered ground-nesting birds which need open landscapes to dive on prey (猎物). The heavy machines and chemicals used in tree-planting can also damage fragile dryland soils, which provide food for insects and birds.
Book clubs are a great way to meet people who share a common love for reading. . But it will all be worth it when your members gather for the first meeting.
.
Some book clubs are mainly meant to be fun and relaxed. Members would talk about the story and feelings about the story, but it wouldn't be a problem if the conversation got carried away from the book. Other book clubs are more serious and highly academic. They would be more focused on meaning, plot, and character.
Choose a location for your club.
Book clubs are typically held at meeting points, like homes, bookstores, or the local library. The meetings can change location sometimes. . Contact the location to inquire about holding your book club there, or ask potential members if they could commit to hosting a club every now and then.
Go for an online club if you don't have a location to meet.
If a physical meeting point isn't an option, you might also have an online book club. . An online meeting point is also a good option because it allows people from all over the world to join the club.
Find a core group of people with a passion for reading.
They could be friends, family, or people you know through various activities, but they should all love to read. Also, make sure that this group of members can commit to meetings on a regular basis. If you plan to have your book club at a physical location, invite people who live close to you. You can invite anyone to an online book club, .
A. if they are keen on reading
B. They take some efforts to organize
C. Choose the types of books to read and discuss
D. Decide how academic or social your book club will be
E. But it is usually easier to keep them at one or a few regular places
F. as long as the people who want to join have reliable Internet access
G. You can discuss books on a chat room, social media apps, or group video chats
Carlton Hotels are famous for their brilliant customer service. Well, here's a wonderful story of this in action, and it1 Joshie, the Giraffe!
When Chris Hurn's2 came back from their holiday at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island in Florida, they3 returned without Joshie, the Giraffe, Chris's young son's "best friend"! They'd4 him behind, and as you can imagine, this caused huge stress and trouble5 ! Chris6 that there was nothing to worry about and that Joshie was having a little7 holiday and that he was fine. His son seemed to8 this and dropped off to sleep!
That evening the Ritz-Carlton called to say that they had found Joshie in the laundry and that he had been9 to the hotel's Loss Prevention Team. Chris told them about his "little10 " about Joshie's extra holiday and wondered if they would11 taking a picture of Joshie on a chair by the pool to ‘prove' it! To Chris's12 , they said they were happy to help — so now that's two people who could sleep sound!
A couple of days later a13 arrived. In it was Joshie, along with some Ritz-Carlton-branded "goodies" including a Frisbee and a football! Also included in the package was a notebook that14 Joshie's extended stay at the hotel!
15 , it included pictures of Joshie16 by the pool of the hotel, having a massage at the spa, meeting with other toy friends and even driving down to the beach in a toy car! It also showed Joshie working on the security cameras making sure that other things didn't get17 !
The Ritz-Carlton18 clearly went the extra mile for Chris's son and I often 19 to them in my presentations on customer inquiry. It's a great example of going beyond customer20 .
Nut carving, known as Hediao in Chinese, generally refers to two kinds of carvings that use the fruit's pit (核), like peach pits, and walnut (核桃) as the raw material.
It gained popularity in the Song Dynasty, and by the Ming Dynasty, the art form (make) very high achievements, with many of the rich and high officials considering fashionable to wear a piece of nut carving around. The ancient artists left their accomplished skills on those small (work), which featured human figures, various birds and beasts, and even lines of poems.
The hardest thing about nut carving is each piece of the raw material is different in texture (纹理) and flexibility. By looking at the textures on the surface of a walnut, a seasoned carving artist can basically tell whether the piece can (use) for carving. In carving the artwork, the artist should first have basic blueprint in his mind according to the textures on the surface, and then make adjustments when meeting any (hide) holes in the pits or walnuts. The whole carving process (constant) requires reconsideration and creation, and there is no established pattern to follow.
(be) a good nut carver, one needs not only the basic skills in painting, calligraphy, and carving, but special materials, knives, good observation, flexible fingers, unique ideas, and exceptional (patient).
