Parents and children often face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting pocket money, learning to save, and deciding to buy expensive things. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to deal with money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money to spend. How can families achieve these goals?
The Tidler family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids make some money. Their son, Ryan, 17, has been watering in the garden since he was 8. He owned his own tools with the help of his parents. Now he has saved $7, 800. Besides, he bought a bike and a wonderful sound system. And he is going to buy a car next year.
Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady manages a company toward children and young adults. "They shouldn't be always thinking of spending money. " Brady warns. "Instead, they should understand basic rules for making money, saving money, and managing money. "
That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past ten years, most Americans aged 18 to 24 borrowed nearly $3, 000 on credit card(信用卡). Among high school seniors, four out of five have never taken a class about money.
Giselle Lopez, 17, of New York City, learned the hard way. She owed(欠) $2, 000 on her first credit card. Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the money off slowly by herself. "Now every time I use money, I know that it comes from my own pocket, "Giselle says. "That gives me a sense of responsibility for my actions. " Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn't have to mean setting strict rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can learn to set those rules themselves.
New York City is home to some of the tallest buildings on Earth. Recently, a new skyscraper joined them. This time it's the thinnest in the world.
After years of development, Steinway Tower is now complete(完成的). The height of the building is 435 meters. But it's just 18 meters wide. The width﹣to﹣height ratio(比例)is 1: 24. That makes the building look very thin, like a chopstick sticking up(竖起)from the ground. For context(供参考), CITIC Tower, known as China Zun Tower in Beijing, stands at 528 meters, but is 84 meters wide.
Secret superpower
You don't need to worry that the building may break in half during a storm. According to SHoP Architects, the designer(设计者)of the building, it was made with the world's strongest concrete(混凝土). However, the building may still move in strong winds. That would cause loud noises, and people inside may feel dizzy(晕眩的).
Many modern tall buildings have a secret tool inside to help them stand still. It's called a damper(风阻尼器), usually a huge steel(钢的)ball that weighs hundreds of tons. For example, the Steinway Tower has a damper of 800 tons. It swings(摇荡)back and forth inside the building to balance(平衡)the force of the wind.
Why is taller better?
There are many people living and working in New York City. Land there is very expensive. Skyscrapers are a great choice for saving land. Meanwhile, designers wanted to make the Steinway Tower a landmark(地标). Part of the building is the 96-year-old historic site of Steinway Hall. It was famous for concerts in the 20th century. The special design of the skyscraper may help people remember the past glory(辉煌)of Steinway Hall.
When you are learning English, reading plays a very important role. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use these English words in writing. Here are some good reading tips for you.
Try to read at the right level. Read something that you can understand. Try to increase the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read and mark them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or lunchtime.
Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. Therefore, choose an interesting one. You can also read newspapers. There are many English newspapers in China.
A. Read what interests you. B. Try to read regularly(有规律地). C. But you don't have to write them while you are reading. D. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it is not interesting. E. For example, 21st Century Teens is easy enough for you to understand and there is always something interesting in it. |
Fight with flood
Dayu(大禹)was a leader of a tribe(部落). He loves his people and always tries his best to protect(保护)them.
One day, a flood came and broke a dam(大坝). Dayu went to fight the flood. Different from his father, Dayu didn't build new dams. He widened the river courses(加宽河道). He also built new river courses. In this way, more water could go through and flow into the sea. There was no more flood problem.
This is not easy work at all. It took 13 years and 20, 000 workers to do it. Dayu worked very hard every day. During the years, Dayu passed by his house three times. But he never went inside. He didn't want his family to take his time and mind(心思)away from the work.
Dayu then became the hero of people. He also helped homeless people build new houses. People admired(敬仰)Dayu very much and made him the new king. After that, Dayu built Xia. It was the first dynasty(朝代)in Chinese history.
Last summer vacation, I decided to visit Wolong in Sichuan Province. Before I started, my mom reminded me to take care of myself again and again. Because it was my first time to travel alone, I felt really 1 at first.
Wolong is a large nature reserve (自然保护区), which includes several panda bases for breeding(繁殖)and research. I stayed at a small hotel next to Wolong Panda Center 2 I arrived. I was going to visit the center the next morning.
Everything went 3 at first the next day. I saw many 4 playing in the trees. They looked so cute. I was not nervous anymore. I also tried to feed them with some bamboo. They were happy and even wanted to 5 me. Later, I left the center happily.
But while I was going back to the hotel, I lost my 6 . I was so worried that I nearly cried. At that moment, a 7 came up to me and asked if I needed any 8 . Then he showed me the way and I arrived at the hotel 9 in the end.
The trip to Wolong not only allowed me to learn about pandas in a more satisfying way, but also to meet friendly people. This 10 gives me the courage to travel alone again in the future.
Last morning, I went on a vacation to Penang in Malaysia my family. We arrived there on Monday morning. It was sunny and hot, so we (decide)to go to the beach near our hotel. My sister and I tried paragliding. It was so exciting and (enjoy). For lunch, we had special and delicious Malaysian yellow noodles. In the afternoon, we rode bicycles to Georgetown. There (be)both new buildings and old buildings there.
On the (two)day, my father and I decided to go to Penang Hill. We wanted to walk to the top, but then it started raining a little we decided to take the train. With too many people there, we waited over an hour for the train and we were wet and cold because we forgot to take umbrella. What's worse, we didn't bring enough money, so we only had a bowl of rice and some fish. The food tasted great because I was so (hunger).
Though we experienced something special, it was still a(wonder)trip! We really enjoyed (we). What a difference a day makes!
