Hi, I'm Tony. I was born in London. But now I study in Australia. I like Sundays because I have much free time on Sundays. What do I do on Sundays?
In the morning, I don't need to get up early. For breakfast I just have some bread. Then I play the piano. At about ten o'clock, I begin to do my homework.
My family always have a big lunch on Sundays. We eat well, and chicken is my favourite food. In the afternoon, I usually play soccer with my friends for two hours. It's good for us to do sports.
What about Sunday evenings? At six o'clock, I have dinner with my parents. We often have rice and fish. But sometimes we eat out. Do we watch TV in the evening? Sure. At half past seven, we often watch TV. An hour later, I talk with my pen friends on the computer. We usually talk about our school life for half an hour. I tell them what I do in the school. And then I go to bed.
①Watch TV. ②Play basketball.
③Do his homework. ④Talk with pen friends.
More kids in the UK are studying Chinese these days. Our school's Chinese department(部) is a good example. In 2015, the Chinese department was seen as "Confucius(孔子) classroom" for 80 students who study Mandarin(普通话) at our school. There is also a teaching assistant(助教) helping us during the class. The department has helped many of us get good grades on our GCSE exams(普通中学教育文凭考试).
But learning Chinese isn't the only focus of the department. We also learn more about Chinese culture. There is a show on our school radio station — OSCAR Radio. Students can discuss Chinese culture and language there freely. For Chinese New Year, younger students act a dragon dance on the school grounds. Teachers and students can enjoy it. One year, the Chinese department put on a great dinner, asking all Chinese students and many teachers to enjoy traditional Chinese meal. While eating the dishes, they enjoyed a live show from a British rock band, which sang Chinese songs.
This semester(学期), we tried a lot of Chinese snacks that we didn't have a chance to taste before. About two thirds of the students say they will keep on studying the language when they go to college. It seems that our school's Chinese class has had an impact on some of the students.

The Shangsi Festival(上巳节), also known as the Double Third Festival, is an ancient Chinese festival. It comes on the third day of the third lunar month. .
The day is said to be the birthday of the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi). He, along with the Yan Emperor (Yandi), is considered to be the ancestor(先祖) of all Chinese people.
. In the Eastern Jin dynasty(朝代), Wang Xizhi wrote in his Lantingji Xu about how people took a bath and wrote poems while drinking from cups drifting(漂浮的) along the river. . In the Ming and Qing dynasties, people did activities like drifting cups, drifting eggs, throwing stones, hiking and listening to music.
In modern times(现代), it is mainly celebrated by the national minorities(少数民族) in China. During the festival, the Han people would go outside to enjoy flowers. To the Zhuang people in Southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, it is a festival for young people to sing songs and find their true love. . For the Li and Miao people in Hainan province, it is a day for remembering ancestors.
Special food is also an important part of the festival. Five-colored sticky rice and painted eggs are traditional food for the Shangsi Festival. .
A. People in different times celebrate the festival in different ways. B. Bamboo dancing is another important activity for them. C. In the Tang dynasty, people enjoyed drinks and beautiful views. D. The Zhuang people believe the rice is good for health and the painted eggs are the symbol of love. E. People often take a bath in the river on that day to wash away bad luck. |
Hello, friends! My name is Mike. I'm an American. I live in New York.
My house is on a busy street. There is a big bookstore next to my house. In the bookstore, there are many kinds of books and dictionaries. On the first floor(楼层), there are some books about science. On the second floor, there are many books for students. On the third floor, there are many dictionaries. On the fourth floor, there are some books for teachers. I often go to the bookstore with my parents, but we go to different floors.
My father likes science, and he often reads some science books on the first floor. My mother works in a middle school, and she often goes to the fourth floor to buy books for teachers. I'm a student, and I often read or buy books on the second floor.
There is a piano player in a bar(酒吧). People come just to hear him play. But one night, a customer 1 him to sing a song.
"I don't sing," says the man.
But the customer tells the waiter, "I'm tired of 2 the piano. I want that man to sing!"
The waiter shouts across the room, "Hey, buddy! If you want the customer to 3 for your show, sing a song!"
So he does. He 4 sings in a bar before. But there is a first time for everything. Nobody hears the song Mona Lisa sung so 5 before! He is really good at singing! He may 6 the rest(剩余部分) of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar, but 7 he has to sing, he goes on to become one of the most famous singers in the US. His name is Nat King Cole.
You, too, have 8 and talents(天赋). You may not feel that your "talent" is great, but it may be 9 than you think. With hard work, you can make your skills better and use your talents to achieve success(成功). But you may have no success at all if you just 10 on your talent.
A small talk is a good way (kill) time and make friends. When you are in other (country), do you know how to have small talks with people?
In England, best topic(话题) is the weather. It's also a safe(安全的) topic. So you can start a small talk by saying "It's a fine day, isn't it?"
English people love their pets, so it's also nice to start with "A (love) dog!", "What's its name?" American people like to talk about sports like soccer and basketball. They also talk clothes like "It's a nice shirt. Where did you buy it?" The weather is a safe talk in America, too.
Of course, there (be) also a lot of topics to avoid(避免) during small talks. Don't ask people, "How old are you?" And never (ask), "How much money do you make? Where are you (work) now?" It makes people feel sad. Don't ask the people you first meet if they have a girlfriend or boyfriend.
At last, please remember it's also important to talk with others (polite).
Let's imagine(想象) you are in a toy store with your friend. The two of you want to buy a doll(玩偶) for play.
If your friend looks like my daughter, Kalea, it is easy for her to buy one like her. Kalea 是一个留着金发有着大眼睛的漂亮女孩。 In fact, she could be the model(模板) of some dolls. But let's imagine that your friend doesn't look like her. She is a little different. She may have no hair because of illness(疾病). Or maybe she loses her arms(手臂) or legs(腿) in a house fire. Do you see dolls like that in the store? Not very often, right?
I am Amy from America. I make dolls by hand for special kids. My first doll was for Macey, a sweet little girl. She lost one of her legs.我花了两天的时间制作了一个像她的玩偶。 She really liked it and it made her life easier. After that, I began to make a lot of dolls for kids like Macey.
I love my job. It is a good way to show kindness. If people meet Macey for the first time, they may ask, "What's wrong with the girl?" But with the doll, they can say, "How cute her doll is! It just looks like her!"
Differences make kids feel lonely(孤独). It's hard to tell special kids that they are beautiful when we never give them anything that looks like them. With a doll, they are happy with what they look like and they know they are beautiful enough to be a doll.
