I was a shy girl. I didn' t even like to answer the telephone for fear I' d have to talk to somebody I didn' t know. I enjoyed the loneliness of exploring nature. However, at school I had to spend all day in the company of others. My escape was reading. I spend a lot of time studying and was rewarded with good grades. My only failure was Spanish — I' d get all As on my written work and tests, but Ds and Fs on the spoken part.
Eventually I went to college. During my third year of college, I had enough of being shy and determined to change my outlook and behavior. One day while at school, I noticed an advertisement for positions on the local classical music radio station. I had grown up listening to classical music, and I could easily pronounce names such as Tchaikovsky, Albinoni, and Chopin.
I had absolutely no background in radio, and absolutely no hope of getting the job. The idea of talking to thousands of listeners in " radio land " terrified me. However, I luckily survived the interview. I was given brief descriptions of symphonies (交响乐) and a public service announcement to read, and a list of composers' names to pronounce. It wasn' t hard for me. I left the recording session (录音时段) with a sense of relief and a sense of accomplishment. About two weeks later I actually landed the job. It was a challenging job, but I grew to enjoy it greatly. I began to feel comfortable talking to people.
Although I now spend many hours each week talking with people, I' m still basically a quiet person. Perhaps it is my soft voice and my quiet nature that helps draw people out as they respond to my questions as I interview them. My former shyness is a fortune, as I can relate to people who feel discomfortable when they talk to newspaper reporters. I still enjoy moments of loneliness and the peace found in nature. But I' m also glad I decided to make a change in my life that has opened many doors and opportunities that I never knew existed.
Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat-eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.
Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.
Since 1960, a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片). It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronic brain. Every year these chips get clever, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will do everything for us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?
Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. But now life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?
Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let's state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are "really, really smart." Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are "really, really smart." Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn't take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not.
Here's the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we're all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with "intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world."

Finding Home
"I hate New Orleans! I wanna go home!" I1to my mother as we moved boxes. 2, going home was not easy because my home was 1, 100 miles away.
I was born and3in northern Virginia. Virginia was my home, and I never expected that to4In 2014, my family experienced a tragedy (悲剧), so my parents decided to move to my mom's hometown of New Orleans.
Only three months after my parents made the5to move, I found myself moving boxes into our new house. My announcement to my mother that I6the new environment was partly motivated by how hot it was, but it was mostly due to the fact that I felt like my entire life had been turned upside down. 1, 100 miles away from everyone and everything I had ever known, I was7. To make matters worse, I was starting high school in two weeks. Beginning high school is a scary8on its own.
I spent my first few months in New Orleans,9wanting to go home to Virginia. But after a few months of missing home, I10that I had a choice. I could continue thinking about how much I missed my old home,11I could start trying to build a new home right here. I chose the latter.
As soon as I stopped giving all my12to how much I missed Virginia, I was able to begin accepting the love that people were already giving me. I joined some clubs at school, which gave me the chance to make friends. My neighbor taught me how to cook some New Orleans food, and I found a wonderful13of fellow cooks and neighbors. Overall, I seized every possible opportunity to14myself and to rebuild my life.
Because of my resilience (复原力) in creating a new home for myself and the15that people have shown to me, home is right here.
Windsor Castle is surrounded by a lot of green gardens in the English countryside. It looks out onto the River Thames and sits next a hunting ground. It was built just outside of London (protect) the capital from the enemies on the west side.

Then, Windsor Castle was the private home of Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ. When she didn' t meet guests at Buckingham Palace, she went to Windsor Castle. that' s not all. Windsor Castle is open to the public. It is now one of England' s most popular tourist (attract). Visitors can look at some of the finest artworks, (include) the paintings of Rembrandt as well as the well-kept gardens.
