At just 11 years old, Vince Weishaus runs his own hair salon (发廊) in his parents' basement in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, doing different hairstyles for free.
For Vince, his love of hair started at a very young age. "He has an older sister who had dolls and he would just, at 2 or 3, be playing with the dolls' hair," recalled Emily Weishaus, Vince's mother.
Not long afterward, he also fell in love with braiding (编辫子). "He watched me do a braid, and then he undid the braid and redid it without me ever showing him how to do it," his mother said. He found his true love as a hairstylist (发型师) when he started cutting his grandmother's hair before he was 5. "I feel that's what gave him the confidence to be who he is," she added.
Vince's hairstyling dream became a reality when his parents presented him with a special surprise on his ninth birthday: his very own salon in their basement. His neighbor had a salon in her home, but she decided to pass on her supplies to Vince when she moved.
Family members and friends have stopped by for appointments—all free of charge—at Vincent Charles Salon. The kid's services range from coloring, to braiding the for school dances, family parties, talent shows and more.
He has colored his own hair different colors, from rose gold to purple. He even colors his friends' hair tips before they head off to camp.
Vince loves learning different practices and skills of the trade from other hair mentors, who teaches him many styling skills.
The sky is the limit for Vince—his eventual goal is to become a world-famous hair colorist one day. His advice to anyone who wants to realize their own dreams: "Do what they love and be themselves."
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) included on December 17, 2020 China's Tai Chi on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was announced during the online meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held from December 14 to 19 in Kingston, capital of Jamaica.
"Born in the mid-17th century in a small village named Chenjiagou located in Central China's Henan province, Tai Chi is not only a kind of traditional Wushu integrated with slow movements and deep breathing, but is also deeply rooted in many areas of Chinese culture, such as medicine and philosophy," Zhu Xianghua says, who is the son of the famous Tai Chi master Zhu Tiancai.
Although it has spread to more than 150 countries and regions, attracting more than 100 million people to practice, the idea that Tai Chi is for the elderly has stopped many young people practicing the ancient Wushu. They think of it as a slow exercise, which is specially made and better suited for their grandparents. Instead, many young people are turning to the Indian practice of yoga to relieve stress, which was placed on the UNESCO's List in 2019.
In order to promote Tai Chi, joint efforts have been made from individuals and the Chinese government in the last decades. Xi'an Jiaotong University requires students to learn Tai Chi. Wang Yunbing, a professor in the university's sports center, stressed that Tai Chi is not only good physical exercise-researchers from the American College of Rheumatology find that it can help manage several diseases but is also connected to ancient Chinese civilization. Since 2014, the World Tai Chi Championships have been held every two years by the International Wushu Federation. It provides a platform for communication and learning between the Tai Chi masters and Tai Chi lovers around the globe. In January 2020, Tai Chi became an official event in the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games.
How to Deal with Rudeness
When you encounter rude people, do your best to maintain your dignity. That might make them madder, but only you have control over your own behavior and the way you deal with them. And whatever you do, never let the other person's bad behavior drive you crazy.
Show empathy(同理心) and sympathy
This requires understanding why the person is being rude. For example, if someone yells at someone else in public (even you), you might mention that you totally understand how he's feeling. If it's a momentary improper behavior, he'll probably apologize. Accept it and move on. If he gets angrier, let it go.
Call the person out on his behavior
If someone is always rude to you, ask him if he realizes what he says or does shows a lack of respect for others. He might not realize he's being rude. If he doesn't, then you need to avoid this person.
Sometimes it's best to just walk away. If the person is still saying impolite things or acting out, his lack of an audience will calm him down. If the rudeness is more of a habit, he might realize it's time to make a change if everyone is walking around him.
Offer extra kindness
However, if you are able to keep your head up and set an example, sometimes the other person will eventually calm down and follow your lead. Don't count on this happening, but it might be worth a shot if you don't have a choice but to be around him.
A. Avoid the rude person
B. Change his rude behavior
C. Here are some ways you can try to deal with them
D. If he cares, he'll apologize and try to be more polite
E. Remember, you are only human and it is OK to get mad
F. There's nothing you can do to stop him or make him behave
G. This might be difficult if the rudeness is more than you can bear
I was waiting anxiously for the bus to start. A woman, sitting next to me, and her daughter both seemed 1. She told me that her daughter had an upset stomach and would throw up continuously; 2, the mother had lost her3. Apart from money, it also had her phone and a phone number of an official she was to meet for discussing a4matter which had to be 5 by tomorrow morning.
I handed her my cellphone without6and told her that she could make any call she wanted. I also7a bottle of water I had in my bag to relieve her daughter of her8. After making several calls, they finally 9to the official! They turned to look at me10and thanked me many times.
The next morning, I received a call from the mother, saying that they couldn't tell how much my11act touched them. I was12to be thanked in this way. I never thought my simple offer13so much in her heart. And I thought of how many opportunities for14we had lost— something with easy access may make a big15to others.
Globally festivals are celebrated with a wide range of origins. However different they may seem, the spirit of (share) joy, gratitude, love or peace is common.
Of all the traditional festivals, the agricultural harvest festival can (find) in almost every culture, often takes place after all the crops have been gathered in. People celebrate to show they are grateful the supply of food.
Customs play an important role in festivals, too.sometimes they can change over time. For example, many big cities have stopped setting off firecrackers (avoid) air pollution. With the development of our society, nowadays, the festivals are becoming (commercial) than before. And people's attitudes towards festivals differ. Although some believe they should not be commercialized, argue that commercialization is good for the economy and happiness.
All in all, festivals reflect people's wishes, (belief), faith and so on. Whatever festivals they are, if you study them (careful), you may be surprised to find different cultures have a lot in common.
The New Year
One pleasant New Year morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in haste(匆忙). He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year. He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for along time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children trembling with cold.
"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was gladly(快乐地) passing on.
The man shook his head.
"You do not belong to this country," said Edward.
The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak the language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time."
