Every year, workers put up a big, freshly cut evergreen tree (常青树) in a historic building in Asbury Park, New Jersey to celebrate Christmas. But recently workers put up a very different kind of Christmas Tree instead.
Unlike an evergreen, it requires little care and can never die. That is because the 2021 Christmas Tree is made entirely of a thick and strong paper material called cardboard. When the winter holidays end, the "tree" is to be recycled. The piece uses natural and artificial lighting to darken parts of the tree while shining light on others. In this way, the piece's appearance changes throughout the day. The tree's creators sought to honor elements of Asbury Park's natural environment, cityscape (城市风光) and rich musical history.
Opinions on the tree differ enormously. "I like that it's different…It's pretty interesting," said local man Chris Trifari. Local Elizabeth Khimitch offered similar praise. "I think it's very creative." She had come to the Grand Arcade to take pictures of her dogs in front of the tree. Others on the boardwalk were not as pleased by the tree. Antony Solimando said it looked like "an Amazon package." "Can't we just have our traditional tree?" added Amy Mackey.
Michael Lavallee, a local artist who goes by the name Porkchop, created the piece with Brad Hoffer. They call it The Giving Tree. He said the company told him there would not be a natural Christmas tree at Convention Hall this year. "I was asked to come in and do something festive-ish, especially in connection with a holiday." said Porkchop.
Amy Quinn is Asbury Park's deputy mayor (副市长). Quinn said the city doesn't intervene in the Convention Hall decisions, but that she likes the piece. She said, "I love that it's different. Love it or hate it, people are talking about it."
Sometimes it takes a work of art to give the inspiration for advances in science. For example, Elon Musk's dream of humans living on other planets was first inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation book series. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is similarly a massive fan of the Star Trek television series. The series inspired him to found his very own space company Blue Origin, according to Forbes magazine.
Let's explore some of the technologies from science fiction that have been brought to life.
● Remote control
Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune features a small flying robot device that is piloted remotely, one of the earliest appearances of drones (无人机) in science fiction. With the first permit for commercial drone use in the US given in 2006, drones became a reality, and can now be found taking on multiple roles. They provide new angles for photography, help farmers maintain their crops and are used in the military. Jeff Bezos has even supported the use of drones to deliver packages for his company Amazon, unveiling a delivery drone back in 2019.
● From thin air
The television show Star Trek, first appearing on screens in 1966, inspired science. One of the most unexpected examples may be the 3D printer. In the program, a device can create any object desired within a matter of seconds.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, US, developed a 3D printer in 2019 that shapes objects using rays of light. They have named the printer the "replicator", the same name as the device in the program to show their inspiration. The device uses light to alter the density of resin (树脂), changing the material from a liquid to a solid in order to shape the desired object.
● Starting the heart
One of the first sci-fi novels, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has had a huge impact on science. Earl Bakken, the inventor of the pacemaker (起搏器), a device placed into the chest that helps the heart to pump blood using small electrical impulses, was inspired by the 1931 movie adaptation of the book. "What intrigued me most was the creative spark of Dr. Frankenstein's electricity," Bakken told The Atlantic. Defibrillators (除颤仪), which restart the heart with an electrical current after a cardiac arrest (心脏骤停), also resemble the electric shock that gave the monster life.
The Silk Road was a historical network of trade routes that connected China and the Mediterranean Sea, allowing cultural and economic interaction between the East and the West. Begun in the 2nd Century B C" the Silk Road carried goods, ideas, and even illness for thousands of miles between great civilizations for more than a thousand years. It was the creation of Germany's Ferdinand von Richthofen, who traveled to China several times in the second half of the 19th Century.
China's powerful Han Dynasty began expanding its trade routes towards the West in the years around 100 B.C. Some shipments made it through to Europe and to northern and eastern Africa, through the port of Alexandria.
As its name suggests, the Silk Road was home to large amount of silk, which made its way from China to the Mediterranean and, to Rome. It wasn't only silk, however, that was carried along the Silk Road. Chinese traders brought delicate porcelain plates and thin but durable paper money. Romans brought delicately carved pottery (陶器)and jewelry to China.
Merchants carried shipments from major center, and then others carried the foods farther on the route. Many merchants traveled in groups, called caravans (商队). Many caravans and individual merchants traveled with bodyguards because theft along the routes was not uncommon.
Several cities along the Silk Road became major trading centers. Some of the more famous of these were Alexandria, Karakorum, Antioch, Constantinople, and Persepolis. Local taxes placed on goods traveling along the route were quite common.
A. The name, however, is a modem idea.
B. Diseases also spread along the Silk Road.
C. It sent silk and other goods to other civilizations.
D. Merchants would prepare some supplies in advance.
E. Goods did not travel with the same person all along the route.
F. As a result, many goods traveled only part of the way due to the high cost
G. Many other things made their way from the East to the West, or from the West to the East.
Agnes Lloyd's 70th birthday came, but the day went normally. Her husband 1 many years ago. She had not heard from her children for a long time, which was 2.
The last bell of the day rang. She picked up her 3 and walked towards her car planning to buy herself a chocolate dessert although her doctors don't4 it for her age. But who cares? It was her birthday, and she 5 it.
The thought made her smile as she 6 her car when a sudden "MRS. LLOYD!" 7 her. Agnes dropped her purse onto the ground. She looked around and was 8 by what she saw.
Her students were standing there carrying birthday signs. She hadn't 9 they had prepared such a surprise for her. Her student Christian came over, picking up her purse, and 10 her to the rest as they all started singing Happy Birthday.11 in her eyes. As they finished the song, small pieces of coloured paper began flying all over the place 12. But that wasn't the best part.
Some of the students parted and her three children stepped out holding a birthday cake with two 13 that formed the number 70. "Happy birthday. Mom!" They exclaimed together, and that's when Agnes lost her 14 for the first time.
Don't forget your parents, 15 your life gets busy. We need to act and remind them that they are loved.

One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding- dong! Ding-dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, "No." He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied in a special way so my brother could untie himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead.
