My life is always filled with sadness and little joy. However, no matter what happens, I can always 1 it bravely.
Last year, I couldn't believe the 2that I was able to enter(进入) the only key high school in my hometown. Then I rushed to my home and told my 3. But my father didn't seem 4 as I was. He just kept smoking without saying a word and my mother put her head down and couldn't help 5.
I knew very well what my family was 6. My mum had been ill in bed for 2 years. We lived a 7life and I couldn't continue my schooling. I felt so upset but I could say8to my parents. I decided to help my father with his work9 the family.
To my surprise, things completely changed 10 the beginning of the new term. My head teacher came to my family with some money, which had been 11by my schoolmates. He encouraged (鼓励) me, “Always have a dream. ” 12 tears(眼泪) in my eyes, I stepped into the key high school.
I have been studying hard since I entered the high school. Whenever I meet difficulties, I always13my teacher and schoolmates. I have a college dream and I must work hard for it, no matter14 hard life is. Just as a great man says, “When one door shuts (关), 15 opens in life. ”

It's so beautiful outside that spending the day in the office would be very boring. So why not take the vacations(假期)off? A new survey(调查)found that 31% of U.S workers don't always take all of their vacation days. Americans have 12 vacation days on average(平均)each year, but they give back an average of 3 vacation days each year.
So why don't they use up their vacation days? Some say they would rather get money back for their unused days; some busy workers say they just can't leave their work. Americans have fewer vacation days than workers in any other country surveyed. The French take their vacations seriously. French workers get an average of 39 vacation days, and 40% plan to take at least one three-to-four-week vacation.
Workers in Sweden receive an average of 25 vacation days a year, but they can't find time to use them all. More workers there return vacation days than any other country surveyed.
British workers have the longest working week in Europe(欧洲), with 23 vacation days—the shortest vacation. So they feel overworked. 75% say their weekends or vacations are too short and 40% would sacrifice a day's pay(工资)for one more vacation day.
Just like many other parts of Australia, the Lake Tyers region(泰尔斯湖地区)suffers(遭受)from wildfires(野火). But this part is different from others because of its fire team—the firefighters(消防队员)are all women.
Charmaine is the leader of the team. About twenty years ago, a house in Lake Tyers caught fire(着火). It was burned down because there was no fire team nearby. Charmaine and her two friends hope to protect(保护)their own land by themselves. They start knocking on their neighbors' doors to look for teammates(队友). Five other women join them. Together they ask the government(政府)to give them firefighter training.
After their fire team is set up(建立), this well-trained team put out many fires. Their job is not only to protect people and houses, but also to save(拯救) their own history. They help to find hundreds of old artifacts(文物)on their land.
"When we first set up the team, some people call us the Banana Women, "Charmaine said, "Because we wear bright yellow uniforms(制服). "They like the name so much that they keep calling themselves this name. They are the bravest(勇敢) "Banana Women " in Australia!
It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench in Washington,Union Station, waiting for the train. There were many people inside the waiting hall.
A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.
"He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him," I said to myself.
Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple(夫妇) walked towards him. "Excuse me, "the man said. "My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?" He gave the boy a meal box.
The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped. In the direction(方向) to which he looked, I saw an old man in rags(衣衫褴褛的)—in a worn sweater, worn trousers and open shoes, entering the hall.
Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood up and helped the old man to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it over the old man's shoulders, saying, "A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?" He put the still-warm meal box in the old man's hands without waiting for an answer.
"Sure, son, but if only you ▲ that sandwich with me. It's too much for a man at my age.
We were all touched(受感动的). Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and Dad went up to those in rags, "Excuse me..."
I rushed into a KFC and took out my pocket money. It was so cold that afternoon but I felt much warmer than I had ever thought possible.

In classes, your teachers will talk about topics(话题) that you are studying. The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take notes. So you must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say.
Here are the three stages(阶段) of taking notes and what you should do during each stage.
①Before Class
Review you notes you have taken before you come to class. This will be good for remembering what was covered. Get you ready to understand new information your teacher will provide.
②During Class
Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying and "the signal words " that tell you what your teacher is going to say and it is important to write in your notes. Examples of signal words are "The most important point is … " and "Remember that… ". Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats and writes on the blackboard. Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviations(缩写) such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.
③After Class
Rewrite your notes to make them more complete and accurate(准确的) by changing abbreviations into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences. Use them to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teachers for help.

During summer vacation, I went on a three-day camping. We had to carry all of our own clothes and food, as well as tents, cooking pots and first aid kits (急救药箱).
On the first day, our instructor (指导员)(teach) us how to read maps. It's not too difficult(understand) maps, but walking with a 13-kg backpack under the burning sun was not the most ideal situation. Each of(we) carried much water to drink as well.
On the(follow) day, we had to find our own way to the next campsite. My group set off at 9 am full of confidence, but soon found ourselves(lose) on a farm!(Luck), each group had a tracker (跟踪器) that made our instructors see where we were. We were quickly found and got back on the right path. We finally got to camp at 7 pm. I was very tiredwalking for about 10 hours.
The third day was a little(easy). We successfully made it back to the car park where our coach was waiting.
I learned so muchthis camping — not only map reading skills, teamwork and how to deal with different kinds of problems. It made me do something I never thought I could do and gave me important life skills.
