Shelly hated cabbage. Now she sat there in silence with tears in her eyes. In front of her, was a bowl 1 with cabbage.
"Shelly, my dear, why don't you eat a little? If not, both of us might 2 trouble." Then Shelly looked quite 3 .
"OK, Dad. I will eat, but just a little." But after a while, she asked, "Dad, if I eat it all, will you give me what I want?"
"Yes."
4 she began to eat. It took her 5 half an hour to finish all the food in the bowl. Then she came up to me and said, "Dad, I want to have my hair cut!"
"Shelly, can you ask for 6 else? If we see your head like that, we'll feel very 7 ." I said.
"But Dad, you 8 keep your promise! Now you're going back on your words."
I had to agree with her. Shelly had all her hair cut. She 9 .
On Monday morning, I took Shelly to school. Just when we arrived, a boy ran towards us and shouted, "Shelly, please wait 10 me!"
Guess what? The boy had no hair, 11 .
"Sir, your daughter is great!" a man stood aside said, "This boy is my son, Henry. He has cancer. He lost his hair when he got 12 . Shelly cut her hair so that Henry felt less 13 . And he is now in high 14 every day with her help. She is a special girl."
Standing there quietly, I knew my little daughter taught me how selfless real 15 was.

Gina Black is an 8-year-old girl. She is very friendly at school. One day, her mother went to her school to have a parent-teacher meeting in a hurry. When she arrived at the school, the teacher seemed a little surprised. She told Mrs. Black that the girl didn't always listen to teachers in class, and she had a poor memory(记忆).
"For example, she often does a wrong page in the workbook," the teacher explained, "and once I've even found her sitting at the wrong desk."
"I don't understand, " Mrs. Black replied, "Where could she have gotten that from? Her father and I won't do it like that."
The teacher went on to tell Mrs Black not to be so worried and in fact, her daughter was still doing fine in school. "She is very sweet and cute." the teacher said.
At last, she added, "by the way, Mrs. Black, our meeting is tomorrow, not today."
The Baikal-Amur Mainline(BAM) is a railway line in Russia. It's about four thousand kilometers long. A special train, the Matvei Mudrov(MM) travels along it. The train brings basic medical treatment(基本医疗) to people living along the railway line. The train took its name from a famous Russian doctor. There are usually between twelve and fifteen doctors on the train. The train stops at places along the line. The people who live in small towns and villages come to the train for medical help. For them, their health center is on the train because there are no doctors or hospitals in their towns or villages.
The MM visits each town or village twice a year. People like the doctors on the train. They say they are kind and good at their jobs. There is a town called Berkakit and about four thousand people live there. There are many people waiting to see the doctors. Mikhail Zdanovich is one of them. When he was 61, he had a problem with his arm. He got good treatment by the doctor on the train, and he felt much better. He left happily and then he came back a few minutes later. He brought fresh bread and some milk to thank the doctor.
For the people who live in these towns and villages, the MM is more than a medical train. It's a bridge between them and the other parts of their country.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? If you were like most children, you probably let your imagination run wild. Maybe you dreamed of flying into space or being a famous cook. Then perhaps over the years, your dreams became more realistic(现实的). Or you might have given up some altogether.
It's important to have dreams because dreams can give us the energy to succeed in life. Dreams inspire(激励) us. They might take a few years or they might take a lifetime to achieve. The important thing is that you're always working for your dream. And the best way to do that is by setting goals.
What is the difference between a dream and a goal? It's been said that dreams are the final destination(终点); goals are the stops along the way. Dreams can be very general. But the steps you take should be very specific. Your dreams mean what you want, but goals tell how you'll get there. That makes goal set a necessary step in reaching your dreams.
Many successful people have spoken about dreams. Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell stressed the importance of working for your dreams. "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat(汗水), determination(决心) and hard work. "Writer Les Brown reminded us that dreams have no age limit. "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream."
If you've been dreaming about doing something for years, start today. Write down your dream, and establish your goals. Then you'll be on your way to making your dreams come true.
Nowadays students are always busy their schoolwork. They have to do much homework and take many exams, so most of them are under stress. In this situation, some parents seldom ask their children (do) any chores. They think their children just need to study hard. However, I don't agree with this idea. Here are some of my ideas.
First, doing housework can help children understand the idea of (fair). In a family, it's (everyone) job to share the housework. And if children do housework at home, they (understand) their parents better. Second, parents should know the (important) of teaching their kids to do some housework. Kids will leave their parents and live their own life, so they can't depend their parents all the time. While children are doing housework, they can learn many things. At the same time, they can become (independence) day by day. Third, doing housework can help children keep (health). After hours' study, children can relax by doing some housework, such as washing clothes and (sweep) the yard.
When you have a cold, your friends can't visit you because they don't want to get a cold. When you are part of a family, if one of you gets a cold, often all of you get it.
There is no good method of treating the common cold.
●Wash your hands.
Washing your hands is the most important way to stop the spread of colds. Cold germs (病菌)are spread by touch. The germs get onto your hands and from there into your eyes, nose and mouth.
If all the members of your family wash their hands too, they will be much less likely to get the cold.
●Cover your nose and mouth.
There is a saying that "coughs and sneezes spread illness" . when coughing and your nose if sneezing. That way, the cold germs won't get onto your hands and spread to things you touch such as doorknobs, tap handles or cups and plates.
●
Cold germs are spread very easily. You can use a disinfectant (消毒的)cleaner to clean doorknobs, taps, toilet handles. Be sure to use only your own towel, toothbrush and cup.
●Take care of yourself.
Some cold medicines can help stop aches and fever. Eat healthy simple foods such as soup or rice. Get enough rest and sleep. Stay in bed, read a book. Do your schoolwork and practice your English!
Remember that a common cold only lasts a few days.
A. You will feel better soon.
B. Open windows to get fresh air.
C. Wash your hands carefully using soap and hot water.
D. Always use a piece of soft paper to cover your mouth
E. I have a bad cold and I don't want to eat anything.
