①Wonder, by United States writer R.J. Palacio, is a powerful story of a boy named August Pullman. He was born with a different face. When he first started school at 10, everyone stared (盯着看) and made fun of him. The story shows all the ups and downs August faced at his new school. Students often bullied him for not looking normal. But at the same time, he made true friends there and even won an award at his graduation ceremony.
②This book has touched my heart. It's not a fairy tale—life isn't one. Instead, the story shows things that could really happen in middle school.
③I also like this book because it's told from different points of view. Along with August, we get chapters (章节) showing other characters' points of view, including his sister. This gives readers a chance to understand different characters' feelings and thoughts.
④I think we can all relate to August. In one way or another, we are all just like him. We each have our differences, and we shouldn't try to change ourselves to fit in. We all experience ups and downs, but like August, we've all won. This book has also changed my attitude (态度) toward life. Despite all the brutality (残忍) in the world, there's always a reason to smile.
In his boyhood, every time they went out, his father would place him on the bicycle beam(车梁).
Slowly when he grew up, he could ride bicycle himself. Each time when they went out, he rode quickly ahead. And his father always rode in the back, shouting at him, "Ride slowly!" At this moment he always turned to his father and complained, "Ride quickly. You're too slow." Later, little by little, his father seemed to ride more slowly. He couldn't stand his father's speed, so he asked his father to ride in front of him and wanted to see if his father could ride faster.
However, his father always said, "You'd better ride in front of me as ever, so that I can follow you more quickly." At that time, he felt he had trouble understanding his father well. Then, slowly, his father became a dot behind him until finally out of sight.
In the end one day, he watched such a subject on TV, "In Africa, when the zebra group migrates(迁徙), will the adult male zebra walk in the front or in the back?" Naturally, he chose the front because he thought the strongest life should brave forward to pioneer for the successors (继承者). But the answer was opposite to his expectations (预期): In the migration, the adult male zebra would in the back to form a strong backing.
He suddenly thought of his father...
a. The writer watched a TV program about zebra.
b. The writer was placed on the bicycle beam.
c. The writer asked his father to ride in front of him.
d. The writer couldn't see his father in his sight.
Recently, keeping pets has become more and more popular in China, especially among the young. According to the research, cats are the fastest growing group among all pet animals. Some may think it has something to do with the cute appearance of cats. However, as far as I know, there are quite a few more reasons behind why young people today are choosing to become "cat servants".
For starters, young people are under great social pressure and communicate less with others. As a result, many of them may experience feelings of loneliness when they are at home. So having a pet in your home can be a nice choice. After a long day's work, you can feel less lonely by knowing that there's going to be a living thing there waiting to greet and spend time with you. Pets can give you a sense of being needed. You can always tell your sorrows to cheer yourself up, or share your secrets with them.
Then, why do people keep cats instead of dogs? Because cats have several advantages over dogs. For example, cats don't need to be walked like dogs, and often, cats keep themselves cleaner. Cats are also more independent than dogs, which allows cat owners to spend more time on their own hobbies and to stay with them freely. Moreover, cats are quiet animals. As a senior high school student, I preferred to share my bad feelings with friends. But anyway, keeping a cat is amazing and you can always give it a try.

You never know how far a kind act can go. When Gloria and Jeff began communicating, they had no idea how much it would encourage people to show their kindness to 1 .
89-year-old Gloria was lying in hospital. She couldn't leave her sickroom. So she 2 a lot of time looking outside her window to watch construction (建筑) workers working on the new building. To her 3 , one of the workers noticed her and waved to her. She couldn't help waving back at this kind 4 . This was only the 5 of a special story between the two.
Jeff knew Gloria was ill. So he decided to 6 a kind message to her. He wrote "Get Well" on one of the beams (柱子) facing her 7 .
"I just thought that was nice," Gloria said, "so I should do something to 8 that."
When Gloria saw the 9 working high above the ground one cold, windy day, she grew concerned. She wrote "10 " on a piece of paper and placed it on the window for the workers to see. "When I saw it on the window, I 11 around and said to my coworkers, ‘Did you see that?'" Jeff said.
One of the nurses took photos about that and 12 them on Weibo. The small act of kindness moved many people, 13 one woman who sent free pizza to the workers.
"I just try to show my care and 14 expect so much." Jeff said. "If 15 is willing to do things like that, the world will be a better place."
Should kids use cell phones in school? There have been a lot of (discuss) about it. As we all know, kids do not need cell phones in school all. Some people may feel that kids need phones for safety (reason).
(one), there are phones in most modern classrooms nowadays. kids need to call their parents, they can use one of the phones in the school. There (be) really no reason for students to have a phone with them.
Besides, cell phones can be a big problem in the school day. If the school allows students (bring) their phones to class, they won't pay much attention (注意力) to their schoolwork because there are too many games and apps on phones. They can pull (kid) attention away from things they should do at school.
What's (bad), cell phones can also be another way that kids bully (欺凌) each other. In some ways, phones would just be another way for bad kids to hurt others.
In a word, I can't think of any good reasons why kids need to have cell phones at school. Phones would just be problem and could lead to more bullying in school.

Hi Li Ping,Thanks for your last e-mail. I fully understand you. It's not easy being a teenager. It's normal to feel upset when your parents ask you to take more after-school classes. Have you talked about this feeling with your parents? What's going on? Also, you're busy preparing the book report for the English class, right? Have you decided which book to write book to write about? What's it about? Fiona |
