A tender woman, or an independent one, which one would you prefer? A recent research shows that most people would choose the latter.

This type of woman is called a nühanzi ("tough woman"). Experts believe these characteristics have social and psychological roots among young females in China. Su Hao's friends all call her a tough woman, because she can finish tough tasks usually carried out by men. For example, she carries 10-litre water to her dormitory on the 5th floor. "I depend on no one but myself," she says.

According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, tough women have become rather common in society. Of the 21,265 respondents, 78.5 percent said they are familiar with a tough woman. About 50 percent said they like women with tough characteristics, while less than 29 percent expressed the opposite view.

Why are tough women gaining popularity? Shen Meng, a psychological consultant, believes the fierce competition in society is contributing to this trend. "Women are often in a disadvantaged position compared to men," Shen says. "In order to survive, they have to be independent, strong and tough."

Liu Xiaolin, professor of psychology at Wuhan Mental Health Center, believes tough women are brought up this way. They are often on close relationship with their fathers, who teach their daughters to be brave and decisive," he says. As a result, these women are more likely to be psychologically healthy and more tolerant to stress, according to Liu.

Though Liu believes that this is a good trend, Hu Shenzhi, a psychologist at the Guangdong Sunflower Counseling Center, says the popularity of tough woman indicates an unclear line between gender identities, which can lead to relationship problems. "Some women with characteristics that differ from the traditional female image may have a difficult time finding Mr Right," he says." Even if they get married, their manly characteristics might cause family conflicts.

    1. (1) Which of the followings does NOT belong to the characteristics of a tough woman?
A . She is independent of others in daily life. B . She is soft and tender to others. C . She is more tolerant to stress. D . She can solve problems usually for men.
    2. (2) How many respondents like tough women?
      A . About 10,600. B . About 16,700. C . 21,265. D . About 6,200.
    3. (3) Why are there more tough women nowadays?
A . Because tough women are more lovely. B . Because more women want to be independent. C . Because girls often love fathers more. D . Because of the fierce competition in society.
    4. (4) What problems may tough women have in their life?
A . It's difficult for them to be friends. B . They often suffer gender confusion. C . They may have difficulty with marriage. D . They have different characteristics form traditional female images.

On the "healthy" section of any breakfast menu, you're bound to spot an egg white omelet (煎蛋卷). With no fat and just a quarter of the calories in a whole egg, the whites look like the best choice at first glance. Not so fast, though new research shows a good reason why you might want to keep the yolk (蛋黄) in if you want to get fit. Plus, forget the bad impression that the cholesterol (胆固醇) in yolks has gotten in the past. The USDA removed limits on dietary cholesterol in its most recent dietary guidelines. It's all because evidence doesn't back up claims that the cholesterol you eat has much influence on blood cholesterol levels.

In a recent study, researchers had ten young men eat either whole eggs or egg whites after completing a strength-training workout. Both egg choices contained 18 grams of protein, and the eggs were developed with chemical markers. Thanks to them, the researchers tracked how the men's bodies used amino acids (氨基酸) from the eggs and egg whites, and found some surprising results. About 65 to 70 percent of amino acids were available in the blood for both the whole egg and egg white groups suggesting they'd be equally useful in building muscles. But the rest of the results didn't back up that conclusion.

When the researchers looked specifically at how much protein synthesis — the process that helps muscles repair and grow — occurred, one form of egg clearly did better than the other. "Having whole eggs immediately after exercise resulted in greater protein synthesis than just having egg whites," says lead study author Nicholas Burdin a statement.

Although this study was too small I to be conclusive, its conclusion backs up whole egg benefits that nutritionists have been praising for years. From their point of view egg whites are high-protein, low-calorie, but the yolk contains nearly all of an egg's vitamins. And one study found that adults who eat whole eggs in the morning lose more weight and body fat than those who get the same number of calories from a bread-based breakfast. While no large studies have looked into the weight-loss benefits of whole eggs vs egg whites, there's also no evidence that the 140 calories in two whole large eggs should scare you away. Crack on, egg lovers.

    1. (1) What's implied in Paragraph 1?
A . The whites can help people have a good shape. B . The yolk's function is different from the whites. C . People tend to consider the yolk to be unhealthy. D . The yolk has much to do with blood cholesterol levels.
    2. (2) Why were the eggs developed with chemical markers?
A . To help process the proteins better. B . To make them healthier for people. C . To track the amino acids during digestion. D . To help the body consume amino acids.
    3. (3) The findings of the recent study mainly show that____.
A . amino acids are easy to get in eggs B . eating the whole egg helps build muscles C . the yolk of the egg is better than the white D . eggs can produce more proteins than any other kinds of food_________.
    4. (4) What would be the best title for the text?
A . Egg Whites VS Whole Eggs B . Egg White Omelets or Just the Yolk C . The Correct Way to Build Muscles D . Unknown Facts about Egg White Omelets

Culture is too complex to define in simple terms. However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified. One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviourthat is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviourthat is shared by a group of people.

To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization. Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people. For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is. The way we consume and what we consume are heavily influenced by material culture.

Language is the most obvious difference between cultures, which reflects the nature and values of that culture. Industrialized societies have a rich vocabulary for commercial and industrial activities, while less industrialized societies may have richer vocabularies for matters important to their societies.

Social organization differs somewhat from society to society. The primary kind of community association is based on blood ties. In many developing countries, the extended family fulfills several social and economic roles. Itprovides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members. The term "brothers" in Zaire includes those whom we call cousins and uncles.

Cultural analysis serves a variety of purposes. Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness. It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.

    1. (1) What can be the best title of the text?
A . What is culture? B . What is material culture? C . Why is culture complex to define? D . Why is cultural analysis necessary?
    2. (2) According Paragraph 2, which of the following belongs to material culture?
      A . Sound of raindrops. B . Trees growing in the wild. C . A mouse running on a street. D . A mouse called Mickey Mouse.
    3. (3) What does the underlined word "It" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
      A . Extended family. B . Primary society. C . Social organization. D . Community association.
    4. (4) What's the author's purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A . To give a definition of cultural analysis. B . To show the benefits of cultural analysis. C . To express the wishes to the human society. D . To discuss the effect of the promotion of culture.

A few years ago, I was having dinner with some good friends to celebrate the upcoming Christmas holiday. As we were finishing up that evening, one of my friends told us a very story about something that had happened the day before. Her son's friend was in his mid-twenties and self-employed. He lived on the second floor of a house nearby. Someone who lived on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burnt down. All the people escaped, but the house was completely destroyed with everything in it.

All this young man had werethe clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next.

Those of us sitting at the dinner table were horrified. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute money. My friend put up her hand and said, "He will not accept money. We tried to persuade him, but he thinks it is charity and won't take it. All he wants is a warm coat and some used clothing if anyone has some. "

We were all more than happy to fulfill this request and were told that he wore a size 2XL. None of us knew men who wore that size, so it was going to be a bit of a challenge to take care of this quickly.

It was a typically cold New York Christmas, and I couldn't imagine him without a coat. I shed tears on the drive home, a combination of grateful tears for the many blessings I had in my life and sad tears for this poor youngmanand his troubles.

I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear thought in my mind. I was to find this young man a coat.

    注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The next morning, I went to a nearby charity shop.
