More than 3,000 languages are spoken onthe earth today. Many of these languages are spoken1 small groups of people. On the2 hand, over 200 languages are spoken by onemillion or more people. Chinese is the language spoken by the3 number of people in the world. But English ismost4 spoken in the world.
English is spoken by more than 400million people5 their first language. It is6 by most people in the U.S.A., Great Britain,Canada, Australia and New Zealand. And it is7 used very widely in many other countries ofthe world.
Look at the back of your watch. You maysee the English words "Made8 China, or Japan, even Germany." Englishis the first language in9 ofthese countries. Why are English words10 on it? That is because in the modern worldEnglish is widely used for business between different countries.
Our living environment is being polluted faster than before and it seems nobody can prevent it. Time brings us more people, and more people bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities and growing use of man-made materials.
How can we understand and solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man —by his desire (欲望)for a modern way of life. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There are more people from the countryside moving into the cities and enjoying the modern society. But as the technological momentum (势头) has grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.
Now we have to stop to ask ourselves where we are going and why. It makes one think of the story about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker, "I've got some good news and bad news. The good news is that we're going at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we're lost and don't know where we are going. " The sad fact is that this problem becomes a true story when speaking of our modern society.
My Plan for Learning English
Many students and teachers always ask this question "What's the best way to learn English well?" Different people have different answers. Here is my plan for learning English. It is based on(根据) my own experience in learning languages. It helped me when I learned English. I hope that it can help you, too.
·Speak to Americans as much as possible.
·Write, write, write—letters, emails, notes, etc.
·Make phone calls to practise your English.
·Watch TV and movies.
·Listen to the radio.
·Read as much as possible.
It is important to believe that you will improve your English. Sometimes when you make plans, they seem very difficult. Progress comes little by little. Think about where you are today, and where you were last week or last month. Maybe it doesn't seem you have come very far. But if you stop and think about where you were six months ago, or even a year ago, then you will see your progress. That progress gives you hope. Keep on studying, and you will reach your goal sooner or later!
English words don't stay the same. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Different words come into use, or old words are used in a new way.
English can be changed by borrowing words from other languages. The word "tomato" was borrowed from Mexico and "tea"came from China and so on. Now new space and science words are being borrowed from other countries, too. New words are formed by adding two words together. "Countryside" and "earthquake" are made up of two parts. Sometimes new words are shorter forms of old words. The word "photo" was made from "photograph" by cutting off the end of the longer word. "Plane" was made by cutting off the front part of "airplane". The names of people and products can become new words, too. Our "sandwich" was named after a man called Sandwich and "sello tape"(透明胶带) was a name given by the company that first made the product.
Stay Home Studying
17-year-old Liu Yu was a high school student in China. She planned to go back to school on Feb 17 to prepare for the 2020 college entrance examination (高考) . However, the Ministry of Education (教育部) told people in late January that the spring term for all schools would be put off because of the serious disease (疾病) in China. So Liu Yu, like all the other students, had to stay at home.
However, Liu and her classmates didn't fall behind their plans and began studying full-time again – only from home. It may have become the largest online teaching experiment the country has ever seen.
To go with students' new learning environment, a "cloud platform (云平台) " was started using on Feb 17. It provided students with education resources (资源) covering all school subjects. But some students had difficulty going to the website or using smart phones. A TV channel by China Education Television started airing classes on Feb 17. So students could have classes and study online or on TV at home.
But the online platform and TV channel don't just offer school knowledge. Students can also learn how to protect themselves from the disease and psychological (心理的) health during this period, according to the Ministry of Education.
For some students, the chance to study from home has had some unexpected benefits. Yuan Siyi, who lives in Hubei province, used to get up before 6 am on school days, but since starting online courses, she got more hours of sleep every morning. "I like online teaching because I have more freedom at home," Yuan told TEENS. She began her all-day courses on Feb 3.
However, online teaching and learning has its weaknesses compared to studying in a traditional classroom. "My motivation (动力) to study is stronger when my classmates are around me and all working very hard," Yuan said. According to the Ministry of Education, online courses are just a short-time way of learning during the disease. When the new term begins, schools will no longer use online classes instead of classroom teaching.
Katie Spotz is a 22-year-old girl from America. She wants to cross the Atlantic Ocean by boat. If she succeeds, she'll be the youngest and the first American to finish the 2500-mile trip.
Spotz began sailing when she was at university, but she has never tried to sail such a long way before. It will be a great challenge for her. In recent years, she has swum all the way down the 325-mile Allegheny River and traveled by bike form Seattle to Washington.
Spotz knows that she may see some dangerous things during the trip. It will be very dangerous if she meets very bad weather in the middle of the sea. But she believes that she can deal with all the difficulties.
"I never thought I could run 26 miles," she said. "But once I finished it, I realized that maybe I could do something even more difficult. "
Spotz wants to collect money by going on this trip. She wants to
collect money for an organization called "Blue Planet run". The organization offers free, safe drinking water to people who need it.
It takes her about three months to finish this trip. Good luck to this brave girl and best wishes to her!
