Willard Franklin came to my class half a year ago. But since the first day, he locked himself in his world and 1 spoke to others. As his teacher, I tried to start a talk with him but 2 . It seemed as if he just didn't want to break his silence.
Before the Christmas, we got the news of the yearly collection of money for the poor in our school. "Christmas is a season of 3 , " I told my students. "By giving a little money, you will help buy some toys, food and clothing for these students in 4 . The collection will start tomorrow. "
But the next morning I found that almost 5 forgot about the collection expect Willard. He came up to my desk with his head down. He put two coins into the small box.
"I don't need milk for lunch, " he said 6 .
After school I couldn't help sharing what had happened in the morning with our headmaster.
"I think Willard may be 7 to become a part of our class. "
"I am glad to hear that, " he nodded. "And I just got a list of the 8 families in our school who need help most. Here, take a 9 . "
As I sat down to read, I found Willard Franklin was at the top of the list. At that moment, I started to know Willard for the first time —a cold face with a 10 heart. Since then, I learnt that whether rich or poor, every child has a kind heart.
In the 13th century the famous Italian traveller, Marco Polo, travelled a long way to China. During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was paper money. In Western countries, people did not use paper money until the 15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century.
A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2, 000 years ago. He made it from wood. He took the wood from trees and made it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book.
Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. Every day, people throw away about 2, 800 tons of paper. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting nearly 48, 000 trees every day. Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now. If we don't, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper.
So, can we save paper? We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes. We can choose drinks in bottles instead of those in paper packets. We can also use cotton handkerchiefs but not paper ones. When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags. If the shop assistant does give us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later.
Everyone can help to save paper. If we all try our best, we can help protect trees. And we should do it now before it is too late.
One morning, Ann's neighbor Tracy found a lost dog walking around the local middle school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.
Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers (传单), and put them in mailboxes. At the same time, Ann went to buy some food for the dog. She told her two sons not to fall in love with the dog, Ann's son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering (恢复) from a heart operation (手术), was 21 years old.
Four days later Ann was still taking care of the dog, and they started to call it Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog hit itself against the door and barked loudly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley rushed into the boys' room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack (心脏病发作). Riley ran over to Jack and sopped barking when Ann bent over to help Jack.
"Without it, the doctor said Jack would have died, " Ann reported to a local newspaper. By then, no one called to ask for the dog, so Ann wanted to keep it.
The next morning Tracy got a call. A man named Peter recognized his lost dog and called the number on the flier. Tracy started crying, and told him, "That dog saved my friend's son. "
Peter drove to Ann's house to pick up his dog, and saw Thomas and Jack crying in the window. After a few moments, Peter said, "Maybe Odie was supposed to find you, maybe you should keep it. "

The next morning, the four friends go to Oz's room. The Scarecrow (稻草人) asks Oz, "Is my brain (大脑) ready?"
The little man opens a green box with the word "brain" on it. He slowly puts a brain into the Scarecrow's head.
"Now you are a very clever scarecrow, " says Oz.
The Tin Woodman (铁皮人) is next.
"Where is my heart?" he asks.
Oz takes out a beautiful red heart from the green box.
"Here is a special red heart. Wear it all the time, " says Oz.
"Thank you!" says the Tin Woodman. "Now I can love someone. "
"Now, you must give me courage!" says the Lion.
Oz gives him a green bottle with the word "courage" on it.
The Lion drinks it quickly and then smiles.
"I am very, very brave now!" says the Lion, "Thank you!"
"And what about Toto and me?" asks Dorothy quietly.
"I can take you to Kansas in my hot—air balloon (气球), "says Oz. "Come with me!"
But Toto suddenly sees a cat and runs after it. "Toto!Come here!" says Dorothy. She runs after Toto to pick it up. But it's too late. The rope (绳子) breaks and the big hot—air balloon goes up into the sky with Oz in it.
"Go to the land of the Quadlings, Goodbye, " cries Oz "The Good Witch of the South lives there. She can help you!" Then Oz and the hot—air balloon fly far away.

Humans can't stop natural disasters because we can't stop the power(力量) of nature.
For example, a flood comes when there is too much water on the land. Sometimes, it can come after a big rainstorm at sea. Then too much sea water comes onto the land. Fast moving flood can hurt us. It can also hurt our homes. We can't stop the water from coming, but we can try to stop the water by making a wall with sandbags. Sometimes, the sandbags help stop the water. Sometimes they don't.
An earthquake happens where land moves. The land goes up and down and all around. The land shakes. We may be hurt by things that fall down in an earthquake. Falling things can start fires. We can't stop an earthquake from coming. We can try to make our homes strong in order to prevent them from falling down in an earthquake.
A tornado(龙卷风) is fast air that goes around and around over the land. A tornado can pick up everything. It can break anything in the way. A typhoon is a big storm with fast moving wind and rain. It begins at sea and can come onto the land. Its fast winds can hurt us and our homes.
We can't stop the power of nature, but we can go to places where we will feel safe.
