Once,in a small village, lived a family with eight children. Two of the children loved1 very much, but the family was so poor that it was impossible to send2 of them to study at the art college at the same time. After many discussions, the two boys finally make a3 .They would toss(抛) a coin. The loser would go4 into the mines (煤矿) and5 his brother studying at the college with his earnings(赚的钱).Then, when the brother who won the toss finished his studies, after four years,he would support the other brother studying at the6 .
James won the toss and Jack went down into the mines.James worked with all his heart and his paintings were much7 than those of most of his teachers, and by the time he 8 ,he was beginning to make a lot of money for his paintings.
9 James returned, the family held a big dinner for his great success.Soon after the meal began,James 10 up from his seat to drink a toast (举杯祝酒) to his dear 11 .He said, "Jack, now you can go to the art college and your 12 will come true.I will take care of you. "
But Jack said 13 , "Brother, the four years in the mines has done too much to my hands,so it's too 14 .Now I can't even hold a glass."
To show his great love and respect,James drew his brother's 15 with fingers towards the sky.
He called his drawing "The Praying Hands",which became very famous years later.
Note﹣taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident when you are studying. But unluckily, most students don't know how to take notes.
★Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that's great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.
★Ask. Don't be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat (重复说) what you miss. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can't follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
★Compare. Comparing your notes with your classmates can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct (纠正) some mistakes.
★Organize. Note﹣taking also needs organization. Keep notes for each subject in one notebook,so that you can find everything easily when a test comes.
★Good note﹣taking takes time. If you decide to recopy your notes every evening, you'll surely have less time to watch TV. But you'll save time in the coming test.
As a student,I was most afraid to answer questions in class, and I found that the students around were just like me.At the beginning of each class, when the teacher asked a question,I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.One day,in a foreign language class,Mr.Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class. So he asked us some questions, but no one answered. "Let me tell you a story first," he said. "When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech,I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard(纸板)folded in half, wrote their names in bold(粗体的) with the most eye﹣catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat.So when the speaker needed the answers from the students,he could see and call a listener's name directly." "I couldn't understand that.My classmate told me the speakers were all top people, who meant chances. When your answer was to his surprise,it meant he might give you more chances. In fact,I really saw a few students get great chances because of that." After listening to the story,I understood that the chance will not find you itself. You must show yourself all the time so that you can find a chance on the card.
Irene has a secret. Her mom is the Principal (校长)at her high school. She doesn't want anyone to know because her classmates would think that she gets special treatment. Not even her friends know about the secret. When her friends ask to go to her house, she just says that her parents don't allow guests. Irene's mom also keeps the secret.
"Bring Your Mom to Campus" day was coming up and Irene usually told her friends in the past years that her mom was out of town. "What does your mom do?" her friend asked. " She is a cancer researcher, so she travels a lot." Funny enough, Irene's mom was always at "Bring Your Mom to Campus" day. The Vice Principal once asked her, "Do you have a daughter?" Irene's mom said, "Yes, she is in college now."
Irene was very close to getting an A in her Calculus (微积分)class. There was only one exam left. Irene would have to get 100% on the exam to push her grade to an A. The teacher offered the students extra credit if they brought their mom to "Bring Your Mom to Campus" day. Irene decided that this year was going to be the year she told her secret to everyone. Irene told her mom about her decision and her mom agreed. On "Bring Your Mom to Campus" day, Irene brought her mom to her Calculus class. "Hi, our Principal. What brings you here?" asked the Calculus teacher. "I'm actually Irene's mom." she said.
It is good to keep animals in zoos. Zoos are places for people to see many different kinds of animals from all over the world. Without zoos, most people would never see a real tiger or bear.
Secondly, zoos look after the animals very well. The animals are always given food and cleaned on time. In the wild, it is not always possible for an animal to find food, so sometimes it goes hungry. Thirdly, zoos protect the animals. They offer them safe place to live in. In the wild, some kinds of animals are in danger of becoming extinct(灭绝). But zoos give these animals a chance to live. Without zoos, there would be fewer kinds of animals in the world.
However, some people think it is unnatural (非自然的) and unfair to keep wild animals in cages. Most animals are kept in cages that are too small for them. The animals such as bears and tigers always look sad in cages. Wild animals should look for their own food. Anyone would not feel happy if he isn't allowed to go outside his home and animals don't like it either.
There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father's Day Mums have Mother's Day But do our grandparents have a special festival?Yes,they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That's because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called "seniors" instead of "old people". They'd rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part﹣time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don't have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don't often live with their children﹣they live alone. For holidays the family usually gather at the grandparents' home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.
These days,I'm not very happy because I quarreled with my parents.I'm a middle school student.I have a lot of rules in my home and my parents are strict my behavior.I'm not (allow) to go out at night, even with a friend, for my parents want to make sure of my (safe).I can't choose my own clothes and I can't get my ears (pierce).I have some hobbies, especially playing basketball. However,my parents think (rain) too much can get in the way of my study and want me to keepfrom it.They hope I can spend my spare time in studying and enter a good university.
Days before, there was a competition with the team from school,so we should practice for it.When my team member called me,my mother answered the phone. She said that I didn't have time and I wouldn't join them anymore. When I heard this,I talked and my mom was so sad.I didn't do it on purpose and feel (regret).I just want to do I like and get their support.
In my life,I get lots of help and love. Now I want to show my thanks. First,I want to thank my parents.Theya happy life for me.They do much for me and give me so much love.Second,I want to thank my teachers. They are very. When I have problems with my study, they are so patient me and help me solve them.Third,I want to thank my .We always study and play and they make me feel less lonely.I hope everyone is in good health and has a better future. |
