It's no secret that there is a space(空间)problem in Manhattan(曼哈顿). People build up higher and higher buildings because there isn't much land left and there is no room to build out. So people have been building lots of tall and thin buildings. Developers(开发商)are trying to build higher and higher buildings. However, the government has made laws(法律)that don't allow developers to build too high buildings.
Oiio Studio thinks about things differently, "what if our buildings were not tall but long?" So the founder of Oiio Studio, loannis Oikonomou, design(设计)a U-shaped building, the Big Bend. It would be a very thin building. It would curve( 弯 曲 ) at the top and return to the ground. Oikonomous said he thought of the great idea because he learned from a piece of news. It said that a company made a lift that could travel in curves. So he designed the Big Bend. He thought it as "the longest building in the world". It would be 4000 feet from end to end and would need a different lift system.
We can't change the law, ▲ . So if we can bend(使弯曲)our building, we would be able to
build one of the most amazing buildings in Manhattan," Oiio Studio said.
The Big Bend is just an idea for now. Oikonomous has sent the plans to a few companies, and is looking for developers. If successful, they will build the Big Bend around West 57th Street, just to the south of Central Park.
I'm Ted. I'd like to tell you something about my birthday. Last Sunday was my 12th birthday. I planned to have a birthday party on Saturday night. I sent 50 invitations to my friends on Monday.
About 25 people told me they would come. On Saturday afternoon, I went to the supermarket to buy some food and drinks. I came home at around 17:30. I was really glad my parents helped clean the house.
The first person arrived at 18:00, and the others came later. Instead of the small number of 25, 40 people came. I didn't have enough food or drinks for them, so I had to have a party in town.
The party in town was fun. The music was beautiful. We danced for a long time. We were all very happy.
The next day I spent my birthday with my parents. And I talked with my grandparents on the phone. I really had a great time.
Here are some short messages. Emma got all of them on her mobile phone yesterday. Please read them carefully and find the best answers to the questions.
Mr Smith moved to another town. One day he didn't feel very well, so he went to see the doctor. He sat down in the waitingroom and looked around. The doctor's degrees (学位证书) were on the wall. Suddenly Mr Smith remembered there had been a classmate with the same name in his class at school, and he had become a doctor!
As he went in to see the doctor, he remembered a young, handsome student and was sad to see how old this man looked. He said to him, "Good morning, Doctor. Did you go to King High School? " The doctor answered, "Yes, I did. "
"Were you there from 1942 to 1946? " Mr Smith asked.
"Yes, I was. " the doctor answered, "How did you know? " Mr Smith laughed and said, "You were in my class! "
"Oh? " the doctor said and looked at him carefully for a few minutes, "What were you teaching? "
