I used to watch a little girl who1 basketball every day from my kitchen window. One day I asked her why she practised so2 . She said: "I would like to go to college. The only way is3 a scholarship(奖学金). I like basketball and I want to be the4 player in college. My dad told me: ‘If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.' She5 changed her mind. I watched her through those junior high years and into senior high school. One day before she graduated6 high school, I saw her sitting on the grass7 . I asked her what was wrong. She told me her coach said she was8 a short girl that she couldn't be a good basketball player, so she should9 dreaming about going to college. She was heartbroken and it10 made me feel sad. Then she smiled and told me her father said that coach was wrong. He did not understand the power of dream. Her father said to her: "If you really want to11 the scholarship of a good college, nothing but you12 can stop your dream." The next year, she and her team went to a big game. She13 by a coach of a famous college team and was offered a scholarship to the14 basketball team of their college. She was about to get the college education15 she had dreamed of and worked towards for all those years. "If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count." It is true.

When a teacher assigns a lot of homework, Domenica Roman draws up a timetable, dividing the assignment into small parts. "It's like eating a steak(牛排)," she says. "You chew it one bite at a time."
One student put a vocabulary list in the bathroom. He learned a new word every day while brushing his teeth. Another student used the time to remember biology terms while practicing running.
In high school, McCray ran track, played football and was in the band and
Orchestra(管弦乐队). "I was so busy that I couldn't waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could put my hands on it," he says.
In an international class, Asian-Americans, on average, scored higher than other students. The teacher found that the Asian-Americans discussed homework problems together, tried different ways to work out the problems and explained their solutions to one another.
Christi is an excellent student at the University of California. If her math teacher assigns five problems, she does ten. If the history teacher assigns eight pages of reading, she reads twelve. "Part of learning is practicing," she says. "And the more you practice, the more you learn."
Last year my English class was difficult. First of all, it wasn't easy for me to understand the teacher when she talked. To begin with, she spoke too quickly, and I couldn't understand every word. Later on, I realized that it doesn't matter if you don't understand every word. I was afraid to speak in class, because I thought my classmates might laugh at me. I couldn't always make complete sentences, either. Then I started to watch English-language TV.It helped a lot. I think that doing lots of listening practice is one of the secrets of becoming a good language learner. Another thing that I found very difficult was English grammar. So I decided to take lots of grammar notes in every class. Then I started to write my own original sentences using the grammar I was learning. It's amazing how much this helped. Now I am enjoying learning English and I got an A this term. My teacher is very impressed.

Do you think childhood is the most beautiful time in your life? Maybe not.Nowadays,Chinese children are sometimes busier on weekends than weekdays. Some students are learning exam skills, o are taking up hobbies to develop themselves.
The Lius are a typical Chinese family. Life for Mrs. Liu's two children is very busy."On most days after school," She says, "I take my son to basketball(train)and my daughter to dancing and piano lessons. Maybe I could cut out a few of their activities, but I believe these activities are important for my children's f.I really want them to have dinner (quick)and then it's time for their homework.
Han Yue,a mother of three, knows all about such stress."In some families, competition starts very young and it will c until the kids get older,"she says."Parents worry if they don't send their small kids to all k of classes, their children will fail at the first beginning. And they are always comparing them wother children. It's crazy.I don't think that's fair. Why don't they just let their kids be kids? People shouldn't push their kids so hard.
Doctors say too much stress is not good for children's (develop). Dr.Luo says all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children."Kids should have time (relax)and think for themselves, too.Although it's normal to want (success) children,it's even more important to have happy children .
One evening I visited the English corner of our university for the first time.It lies beside our university library and there is a spacious(宽敞的) ground. Every evening, large numbers of people go there to improve their English.
When I arrived there, many people had already been there. I looked around and found that most of them were college students. Some of them were talking in English in twos and threes. From time to time they laughed happily. To my great surprise, I even found three foreigners talking and smiling with some students who were listening with great interest. Just then,a tall student came towards me and asked: "Shall we have a talk in English?" My heart beat very fast at that moment, for it was the first time for me to visit the English corner. Anyway, I managed to say "Yes". Soon we were talking freely about our studies, our lives, our hobbies as well as our problems of learning English. Time went fast, and it was already 10 o'clock before I realized it.
I had a good time there and was glad to learn a lot at the corner. I understood the proverb better: "Practice makes perfect."
Failure is what often happens. It is everywhere in our life. Students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and players may fail in competitions. (A) Although failure happens to everyone, but different people's attitudes(态度) towards failure are different.
Some people don't think that their failure is an important thing at all. So they pay no attention to it. As a result, they will have the (B)____failure later. Some people think they themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. Then they(C)____their time and energy on useless things. At last, they may really be fools as they have thought.
(D)Other people are quite different from these two kinds of people mentioned above. Instead of being hopeless and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. (E) they, after, will ,hard, in, work, be , the, successful , end. So we should draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced.
