Berat, from America, a mother of nine daughters, started to learn Chinese in 1980.
"It 1 time and energy to learn Chinese well. I think Chinese is 2 that my girls should learn from a very young age. It's also very 3 for them to study and live in a bilingual environment(双语环境)," Berat told Xinhua.
To make that 4 , Berat sent her girls to bilingual schools. She 5 let them take different kinds of classes, especially classes that can help them practise Chinese.
A very 6 thing is that Berat's two girls got good grades in their Chinese tests but failed(不及格)at their 7 tests at the first two months in the primary school.
"You have no 8 how happy I am for that. I'm so happy 9 it means that they are really working hard to learn Chinese," Berat said.
" 10 most people, I'm a tiger Mum," Berat smiled as she told Xinhua how hard she made her girls 11 Chinese. But for her 12 , she was a good Mum. "I really 13 my mum for what she did. Learning Chinese 14 me more chances to learn about the world," her 19-year-old daughter, Lindsay, told Xinhua. She is studying in the university now. "I will keep learning Chinese in the 15 ," Lindsay said.

Studies show that walking several times a week can lower the risk of a lot of diseases. They include heart diseases, diabetes(糖尿病), strokes and bone loss(骨质疏松). Walking can also help you lose weight.
Studies have also shown that walking can slow down and even prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. Walking several times a week is a good way to control weight and lose body fat. Studies show it also helps reduce feelings of sadness.
Experts say walking is one of the safest ways to exercise. There is a low risk of injuries. So it is good for older people and for people who are starting an exercise programme for the first time.
A walking programme is easy to start. You should wear loose clothes and comfortable shoes. There are shoes that are designed for lots of walking. Doctors say you should walk fast enough to breathe hard. Yet you should still be able to talk. Let your arms move freely while you are walking.
There are no rules for starting a walking programme. Health experts say you can get the most from a walking programme if you walk at about 6 kilometres an hour for thirty minutes a day.
People use languages to communicate(交流). Any language has its ways to express people's minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms(习语). An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say "I'm under the weather", they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:
▪ Example 1: It makes my blood(血液) boil (煮沸) when my brother breaks my computer.
▪ Example 2:The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside on a dark night.
In neither situation above, can our blood reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to understand the ▲ feeling in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.
"Where is the university?" This is a question that many visitors to Cambridge ask. But no one can give them an exact answer, for there is no wall to be found around the university. The university is the city. You can find classroom buildings, libraries, museums and offices of the university all over the city. And most of its members are the students and teachers of the thirty-one colleges.
Cambridge was already a town long before the first students and teachers arrived about 800 years ago. It grew up by the river Cranta, and the river was once called the Cam. A bridge was built over the river as early as 875. So the town got its name "Cambridge".
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries more and more land was for college buildings. The town grew much faster in the nineteenth century after the opening of the railway in 1845. Cambridge became a city in 1951 and now it has a population of over 100,000. Many young students in other countries expect to study at Cambridge. A large number of people from all over the world come to visit the university. It has become a famous place all around the world.

b. Cambridge became a city.
c. More and more land was for college buildings.
d. The first students and teachers arrived at the town.
