The training program will help us live well,I will study hard and learn different skills.After that I can1  my family difficulties and do good to others."A learner on the job training program said, feeling 2 .

Now, there are still many poor people in the world.But it's not good if we give only 9 to them. Instead, we should give them a chance to learn new skills.Therefore,technical training is very important to people in need and they will learn the skills to10 money. It's sad to learn that a whale has died in the ocean.However,that's not the end for the whale.It has a lot to give to other sea animals after death.

When a whale dies,it quickly sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor.There,the whale carcass (尸体) provides food and nutrients to deep—sea animals,which are often hungry for food.The remains can last for decades and create a complex(复杂的) ecosystem called a whale fall — an"oasis(绿洲)"of life in the deep sea.

Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the first time in the South China Sea during a deep—sea expedition carried out by oceanic research vessel Tansuo—1,which finished its expedition on April 2.Tansuo—1 carried the manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi,which can dive to a depth of 4,500 meters.

The whale fall in the South China Sea is about three meters long.Scientists have found several species of shrimp and fish near the whale fall.Some fish have started to eat the whale's tail.The whale fall might be quite recent and needs long—term observation(观察),according to Xie Wei,a scientist who took part in the expedition(考察).

The whale fall ecosystem can exist in the deep ocean because great pressure and cold temperatures there prevent the body from decomposing(分解) too quickly.But the depth also makes it hard for scientists to discover them.There are less than 50 known whale falls in the world.

By studying the whale fall, scientists can better understand how marine ecosystems(生态系统) support life and how to protect biodiversity resources in the deep sea.

    1. (1) Why is a whale fall called an "oasis"?
A . Because it changes the sea' s ecosystem. B . Because it grows at the bottom of the ocean. C . Because it provides food to deep—sea animals. D . Because it can stay under the sea for decades.
    2. (2) What do we know about the whale fall in the South China Sea?
A . It has already been decomposed. B . It's not the first time Chinese have found a whale fall. C . This whale fall may have formed recently. D . Scientists found it at a depth o f4,500 meters.
    3. (3) It's hard to find whale falls because of ____.
      A . their great depth B . low temperatures C . high water pressure D . rapid decomposition
    4. (4) Which does the underlined word"them"in Paragraph 5 refer to?
      A . whales. B . Whales falls. C . Deep—sea animals. D . Scientists.
    5. (5) What is this story mainly about?
A . How whale falls occur. B . How to protect natural resources. C . How marine ecosystems support life. D . A whale fall that was discovered in the South China Sea.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard(果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.

One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village, "Who are they?" I asked. "They are good men from our government," my grandma replied

Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.

One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project(水利工程) was completed a policy(政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.

Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city, However, we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.

    1. (1) What troubled the villagers most was that _________.
A . they had too much work B . it was not convenient to go up the hill C . they could only grow fruit trees D . there wasn't enough water in the orchard
    2. (2) The good men came and offered help probably because of _________.
      A . the villagers' suggestions B . the government's support C . a school's practical activity D . a company's engineering plan
    3. (3) We can infer from the passage that _________.
A . the grandmother doesn't like to live in the city B . the village is a place of interest for tourists now C . there will be more fruit production in the village D . more people like to work in the countryside nowadays
    4. (4) The underlined phrase devoted themselves to is closest in meaning to _________.
A . prepared much for B . donated money to C . drawn public attention to D . put much effort into
    5. (5) What can be the best title for the passage?
A . How is a village improved? B . Who are the good men? C . Why do people come back? D . What does a hometown mean?
