The Healthy Habits Survey(调查) shows that only about one third of American seniors have correct habits. Here are some findings and expert advice.
⒈How many times did you brush your teeth yesterday?
·Finding:A full 33% of seniors brush their teeth only once a day.
·Step:Remove the 300 types of bacteria(细菌) in your mouth each morning with a battery-operated toothbrush.Brush gently for 2 minutes,at least twice a day.
⒉How many times did you wash your hands or bathe yesterday?
·Finding:Seniors,on average, bathe fewer than 3 days a week. And nearly 30% wash their hands only 4 times a day—half of the number doctors recommend.
·Step:We touch our faces around 3,000 times a day—often inviting germs(病菌) to enter our mouth, nose, and eyes.Use toilet paper to avoid touching the door handle. And,most important, wash your hands often with hot running water and soap for 20 seconds.
⒊How often do you think about fighting germs?
·Finding:Seniors are not fighting germs as well as they should.
·Step:Be aware of germs.Do you know it is not your toilet but your kitchen sponge(海绵) that can carry more germs than anything else? To kill these germs, keep your sponge in the microwave for 10 seconds.
Mom and I were about to finish cooking dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish drawer, she went to the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
Mom worked for the local Council on Aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the little things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients (客户) got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil (铝箔纸), and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.
It was about ten years before microwave ovens(微波炉) became common, so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning out Mom's house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir (纪念品). Whenever I look at it, I will always remember the lessons of unselfishness and caring for one's neighbors that were modeled for me by my parents.
Everybody hates rats. But in the areas where there are many earthquakes, rats will soon be man's friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(营救)dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal(信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornel University, New York says, "Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that." Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The "rat project" is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, "It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
Research has shown that people tend to get more happiness from spending their money on experiences, such as travel and entertainment (娱乐), than on things like clothes and electronic products. But are people happier during the purchased (购买的) experience itself? Or does the happiness come more from expecting or remembering the experience?
A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, offers an answer. Our experimental purchases not only bring us greater pleasure in terms of expectation and remembrance than do our material (物质的) purchases, but they also bring us greater in-the-moment enjoyment, the study found.
For the study, the researchers recruited (招募) 2,635 adults who agreed to receive texts at any time during the day. The texts began with a happiness question, which asked the participants (参与者) to tell how they felt "right now", ranging from very bad to very good. Half of them were then asked if they had made a material purchase within the past hour, such as clothing or electronic goods. The others were asked if they had made an experimental purchase within the past hour, such as eating in a restaurant or attending a concert.
The researchers found that the purchasers of the experiences express higher levels of happiness than the purchasers of the material goods, no matter how much the purchases cost.
To deal with possible differences in types of purchasers, the researchers carried out a second study in which they researched more than 5,000 adults. "We still found the same result," said Amit Kumar, the study's lead author (发起人).
"If you want to be happier, it might be wise to shift some of your spending away from material goods and a bit more towards experiences," Kumar said. "That would probably lead to greater happiness."

Almost everything was fantastic in the nature camp except for a girl, Elizabeth. When I saw her 1 alone in the hot sun at lunch, I asked her to eat with us under a shady (阴凉的) tree. However, Elizabeth refused my kind 2 . When we invited her to play volleyball with us, Elizabeth 3 our invitation, too. After a few more unfriendly refusals like that, I decided to stay away from Elizabeth.
It 4 that we were going on a nature 5 and that our instructor paired everyone up with a partner. Guess who my partner turned out to be? It was Elizabeth!
"What do you like to do 6 ?" I asked, trying to make small 7 as we started out. "I like to walk in peace and quiet," Elizabeth replied. So we had the quietest and most peaceful hike in the world 8 we saw a bird. "I think his wing is hurt. Poor little bird," Elizabeth said 9 . "He might be taking a rest over there," I said. Elizabeth nodded. Then she whispered, "But what if he's in 10 , like my granddad?" "Your granddad?" I said. "He fell and broke his leg the day the camp started. He's 11 in hospital and is in so much pain," Elizabeth explained. I noticed she was 12 . "I'm sorry for what I have done. For some reason, whenever I get really sad, I act 13 and want to be alone," she added.
"I get it," I said. "I don't always know how to14 it when I'm feeling down, either." "Thanks," she said, wiping off her tears.
After that, Elizabeth seemed to get along well with us, and I think she actually 15 the last days of the camp.
Next time, if someone is unfriendly, give him a second chance. Maybe he's going through a difficult time.
