If you are a college student looking for a program or taking a gap year to decide what to do next in life, then you should definitely consider volunteering abroad. We have made the selection process easier for college students! Take a look at these volunteer projects one can choose.

    Wildlife Conservation Projects

They are meant for college students who are looking forward to spending time with animals. However, before starting the projects, college students have to attend an online meeting to see if they are suitable for the job, during which they need to answer some questions. Volunteers will get an opportunity to be part of a team working to make the environment better for some animals, as well as protecting them from danger.

Short -term Volunteer Programs (2-week Specials)

They are perfect for those who are looking for spring break programs or summer break programs. The "2-week Special Volunteer Programs" are made for college students who have less time to contribute but want to travel and volunteer abroad. Most of the programs are located in beautiful places and are extremely affordable.

Summer Volunteer and Travel Programs (3- 4-week Specials)

If you think you can make your vacation a little longer, then go for the Summer Volunteer and Travel Programs. These programs are designed in an amazing manner. Volunteers will go to the destinations(目的 地), live like the locals, do some adventure sports, learn a new language and so on.

    Community Development Projects

It is said that there are about 1 billion people who are short of housing facilities (住房设施). It is for this that Community Development Projects hold strong importance in our society. Volunteers are needed to make some real changes. Volunteers will be working to build or repair houses, school premises (校舍), and shelter homes. They help to achieve the goal of making society better.

    1. (1) What should college students do before they join the Wildlife Conservation Projects?
A . Take a language test. B . Have an online interview. C . Learn some animals' habits. D . Prepare some foods for animals.
    2. (2) Which of the following may best suit a college student who doesn't have much time or money?

    3. (3) What are volunteers required to do in the Community Development Projects?

It's no secret now that the more time we spend on social media, the more we feel dissatisfied with ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to influences and celebrities- so it's easy to understand how that can affect our confidence.

But, how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends? Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at content shared by celebrities, new research has found.

The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower "appearance satisfaction". Additionally, it found that engaging with content posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at content posted by strangers, including celebrities.

Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it's hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influences, but when we're comparing ourselves to our friends, it feels like we should- or could-live the way they do.

"One possible explanation is that people may perceive a post showing appearance as being much more attainable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post, " he said. "At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore perceive the images they share to be more unrealistic."

This is not just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers(触 发)us. Maybe you've been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed their dream role. Maybe. . .

All this is to say the obvious: we only see part of people's lives -and if it's getting you down, you're probably comparing your insides to other people's outsides. Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So, put down your phone, get offline, be thankful and try to live your own life.

    1. (1) What did the new study find?
A . Social media invites unfavorable comments. B . Friends' posts affect us more than celebrities'. C . Celebrities have a negative influence on our life. D . Body image causes more concern than social life.
    2. (2) Why are we more likely to compare with our friends according to Swami?
A . They serve as role models. B . We know the way they live. , C . Their lifestyles are accessible. D . We are curious about their life.
    3. (3) What does the underlined word in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
      A . Restricted. B . Related. C . Devoted. D . Exposed.
    4. (4) What does the author suggest people do?
A . Find your dream and fight for it. B . Stop comparing and be yourself. C . Be grateful and lead a perfect life. D . Stop complaining and get down to work.

As much as I love watching Olympic diving, I've never understood why athletes hurry off to the showers and then proceed to relax in a hot tub (热水浴池) after each dive. They're already wet. They're only in the pool for a handful of seconds, so it's not like they need to get cleaned up. And doesn't taking a shower serve the same purpose as sitting in a hot tub?

Actually, that's what Olympic divers usually do between dives as they know very well about the importance of warm-ups and cool-downs. So, what's the actual reason?

As it turns out, showers and hot tubs are used pretty interchangeably by the swimming pool. However, there is a need for both. First, let's start with why divers need to take a shower between dives. It has to do with body temperature and keeping their muscles relaxed. As you can imagine, practicing dives in the pool, then having to keep your body warm in a shower, and then jumping off a 10-meter platform and into cold water couldn't be comfortable for anyone. Going back and forth between these warm and cool temperatures can cause a diver's muscles to tense or cramp up(痉挛),which can lead to injuries to the muscles. Showers allow an Olympic diver to recover and prevent that.

In that way, showers and hot tubs serve the same purpose. A hot tub is generally used if you have a bit more time between dives and have already stretched. The shower walls on the pool deck can typically provide enough space for more divers at the same time, and they're especially helpful for athletes who need to stretch or who only have a few minutes be tween dives. Just like Olympic swimmers depend on thick clothes to keep their muscles warm, Olympic divers rely on these methods to stay loose. If you ask me, it's not a bad way to pass the time!

    1. (1) What does the underlined word "proceed" in Paragraph 1 mean?
      A . Fail. B . Continue. C . Stop. D . Afford.
    2. (2) Why do the athletes need showers after diving?
A . To fully clean their body. B . To rest and wait for the results. C . To avoid possible muscle injuries. D . To stop themselves from catching a cold.
    3. (3) What does the last paragraph suggest?
A . The shower walls are designed for divers in the final round. B . Olympic swimmers need to stay warm using hot tubs. C . Athletes usually do some activities to pass the time. D . Hot tubs are as important as showers for divers.
    4. (4) What is the author's purpose in writing this text?
A . To tell us the difference between diving and swimming. B . To explain some little-known knowledge about divers. C . To compare cold showers with the hot bath. D . To provide some diving advice for us.

I start my workday early, parking myself in front of my home computer and often forgetting to get up for hours. But one thing I try to do every day is take a ten-minute walk around midday.

Walking at lunchtime is a smart thing to do, a new study finds. This doesn't seem like news. After all, we've known forever that doing exercise is good for us. But as The New York Times points out, those fitness studies typically looked at the effects of exercise plans in the long run. This new study looks at changes that happen more quickly, from one day to the next or even from this hour to the next hour.

For the study, researchers gathered a group of mostly sedentary(久坐的) office workers in the UK. All were out of shape, but otherwise emotionally and physically healthy. Researchers asked them to take 30-minute lunchtime walks, three days a week for 10 weeks. The volunteers were also asked to install apps on their phones, so that the researchers could send the volunteers questions after they walked. Then the researchers used those answers to judge how the volunteers were feeling about life and work, and to measure their feelings about everything from stress and tension to motivation.

When the researchers compared the volunteers' answers on the afternoons when they walked to those on the afternoons they didn't walk, there was quite a difference. On the days when they had a lunchtime walk, the volunteers said they felt less stressed, more energetic and more relaxed versus(与……相对) on the days when they didn't walk.

Unfortunately, the researchers said many of the volunteers didn't believe they'd be able to continue walking once the study ended, mainly because they were expected to work through

their lunch breaks. It's an understandable response, but a sad one.

    1. (1) How does the new study differ from other fitness studies?
A . It calls on people to have a walk after lunch. B . It focuses on the short-term effects of walking. C . It mainly pays attention to sedentary office workers. D . It aims at studying the relationship between exercise and health.
    2. (2) Why were the volunteers required to install apps on their phones?
A . To record their time spent online. B . To know how long they walked. C . To prevent them from getting lost. D . To respond to the researchers' questions.
    3. (3) What is the finding of the new study?
A . Lunchtime walks can soon improve people's mood. B . Office workers usually have little time to go for a walk. C . A sedentary lifestyle is linked to an increased risk of disease. D . Walking brings more advantages to people than other exercise.
    4. (4) What can we infer about the volunteers from the last paragraph?
A . They will spend more time walking. B . Some of them tend to be more outgoing. C . Most of them will perform better at work. D . They may stop lunchtime walks due to work pressure.

Camping Tips &Tricks for a Fun Trip

Many people idealize camping trips as being this easy, effortless encounter with destinations rich with natural landscapes and nights under the stars twinkling in the sky above. That's why we've prepared the best camping tips for you!

Plan accordingly, and then plan again. When you're out in the middle of nowhere, you have to be equipped to nature's challenges. Therefore, a plan for unexpected weather changes is essential to a successful camping trip. For example, consider packing extra suppliers like blankets. While that might seem like a huge inconvenience, the biggest and real issue occurs when you need something you don't have.

Know what you need. Not all beginner campers will need the top-of-the-line, latest supplies. But you should have at least the basics! That includes a decent tent with enough room for people camping with you, a good sleeping bag appropriate for the season, and other supplies like food and water. You'd better create a convenient checklist that lays out everything that you should consider.

When you're far away from the major conveniences we rely upon like an urgent care center, police stations, and emergency rooms, you should always remember that safety is your first priority! A first aid kit is a great starting point, but it's certainly not the end of maximizing your safety efforts. Depending on where you plan to camp, you'll want to grab these items that cover you in most emergency situations: a pocket knife, a fire starter, and a safety whistle.

Ready to go camping? Now you know what to expect and how to prepare for your next camping trip, so you actually have fun—rain or shine!

    A. Always choose a safe campsite.

    B. Never leave home without safety in mind.

C We encourage you to create a safety supply kit.

    D. Camping doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.

    E. A clear 3-day forecast can easily shift into a sudden heavy rain.

    F. To maximize your comfort, always bring appropriate clothes for cold and rain.

    G. But for beginner campers, those expectations can rapidly turn into a mess of reality.

Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble (learn) English? I hadn't, until one day my five-year-old son asked me whether there (be) ham in a hamburger. There isn't. This (sudden) made me realize that there's no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be crazy language to learn.

example, when we are traveling we say that we are in the car or the taxi, but on the train or bus! While we are doing all this traveling, we can get seasick at sea, but we don't get homesick when we get back home.

Even the (small) words in the world can be (puzzle). When you see the capitalized "WHO" in a medical report, do you read it as the "who" in "Who's that"? You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in a house can burn up as it burns down.

English  (invent) by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when I wind up my watch, it starts,  when I wind up this passage, it ends.
