Asha looked out of the window on the plane. What a1 ! The buildings were so tall. The city was large, much larger than her small town.
Asha was on vacation in New York City. She was very2 as she had always wanted to come since she was young. She read stories about it and studied its3 . She knew how the island of Manhattan was bought from native Americans 300 years ago. She4 knew people from all over the world came to live here. These people, like Asha, 5 a new life in New York.
But Asha was only staying for fourteen6 . She thought of these two weeks as a time to7 herself to move back to New York. She would return to her small8 , stay for one year, and then come to live in New York forever. So she had to plan this vacation9 .
In New York Asha wanted to do10 things. First, she wanted to look for a job. Next, she would find a place to live. She knew it was expensive to live in New York and that finding a good place to live was11 . And the third thing she wanted to do was to12 her English. She had studied English for 12 years but didn't know13 she could understand "real" English.
Before leaving, her friends told her that New York was a14 place. But Asha wasn't worried. She had studied New York carefully. She believed she would be safe.
15 Asha saw the Statue of Liberty! The plane flew around it, and then began to slow down. Soon Asha was on the ground, getting ready to leave the plane to greet her future.
Question: I want to speak English well. What can I do? | |
Students | Opinions |
Susan | If you want to speak English well, I think you should read English books and listen to English radio. You shouldn't think in your language. You must think in English and speak what you think, and then you will be successful. |
William | I think the most useful way is watching English films. But you know this all depends on yourself. If you work hard, you can find that speaking English is quite a funny thing. Keep moving! Nothing is impossible! |
Ravi Chandra | Don't be afraid and then you will become a good speaker. Speak whatever you want in English in front of a mirror. Try this for just 30 days and then see the results. I hope you will practice this. |
Helen Gao | If you can study carefully for a long time, you will see the results. You should have a right way and speak English bravely. I believe you will smile in the end. |
Every living thing needs to reproduce. Reproducing means creating more members of your group. In order for plants to reproduce, they have to spread their seeds (种子) to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity. Many seeds are inside of fruit. When a piece of fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread this way.
Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its "wings" help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread their seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal's body, it stays whole. when the seed leaves the animal, it's in a new place.
Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that attracts ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
a. They only eat part of the seed.
b. They help seeds fall from the tree.
c. They carry seeds to the underground home.
d. They pick up the fruit and move it far away.
e. They leave the rest of the seed underground.
My hobby is collecting old mobile phones. Even people I don't know send me their old phones these days when they find out about my strange hobby. It all started when I was eight. I saw my parents using their mobiles all the time and I kept asking them if I could have one. My dad told the man next door about this and one day he came round with a ten-year-old phone he no longer used. Everyone at school thought it was great when I took it there the next day, even though it didn't actually work!
Everyone has a reason for collecting things. For some, it's because whatever they're collecting maybe worth lots of money in the future. Others love having something that could be shown in a museum somewhere. That's certainly what attracts (吸引) me to it. I often wonder what's inside them, as they're so much heavier than modern phones.
Some people find my hobby a bit strange. I used to tell everyone about it, but some people just didn't know what to say, so they ended up feeling uncomfortable, which I'd rather avoid. I can totally understand — not everybody keeps over 150 old mobile phones in their bedroom! Most people find the fact it's unusual really interesting, and I'm proud to have such an unusual hobby.
My mum and dad put up some shelves to keep my collection on. Although there's probably space for a few more, and there are still some particular (特定的) phones I'd like to find, I may give up collecting them soon. My dad recently gave me the coins he collected when he was my age and they look amazing. It's a far more expensive hobby but I really love having a go at it. I've spent more or less nothing on my phone collection so I've managed to save up quite a bit. We'll see!
We all enjoy being part of a group—there's no better work than teamwork, right? Actually, I disagree. Teamwork can be hard. In fact, it was so difficult that I left my office job and started working from home on my own. It's a much better fit for me, and it has made me think about why teamwork can make our jobs harder rather than easier.
Personalities (个性) can make teamwork difficult. There's often someone on the team that puts their needs first. The team often goes along with this person, whose ideas might not be the best, just the loudest. Just one difficult personality can make teamwork hard. Combine (结合) several challenging personality types, and it's even harder.
Not having enough time together can also make teamwork challenging. For example, I was once on a team where we never had enough time to meet as a group. To successfully work as a team, you need time together—and lots of it.
A final reason teamwork is difficult is because there's often no training on how to work on a team. You can't just put people in a room and expect them to work well with each other. You need to build trust with your team members. Think of football players: They aren't just given a ball and told to play. They practice, and they train.
Team can be hard, but working alone has its challenges, too. When my computer doesn't work, I don't have an IT person to turn to. When I have a great idea, I don't have anyone to share it with to see if it is really a great idea. Don't get me wrong—I still like my team of one and enjoy making all of the important decisions myself. But now I realize what was wrong with the teamwork I did in the past and how good teamwork could be if done correctly. And that's useful information—because one day I might want to turn my ME TEAM into a WE TEAM.

control good send or mean |
How do you prefer to get in touch with your friends? Send a message make a phone call? If you want to feel more connected to the people you're talking to, you should call them instead of messages, according to a study shown in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
Many people think phone calls are a bit embarrassed. They like to send messages because they can exactly what they're texting and think about it before they send it.
But on the other hand, texting can make it hard to understand the true of a conversation. Making a phone call is for this than texting. You don't need to overthink what are behind words and punctuation(标点).
Do you find that you learn things faster than your parents sometimes? Congratulations, you could be right. Scientists have found the reason children learn faster than adults.
Scientists at Brown University, US, found that school-aged children learn new knowledge and
(skill) faster than grown-ups. This has something to do with a chemical (化学物质) called GABA in our brains. It reduces brain noise so that we can learn things more (easy). It also (make) new knowledge stay longer in our heads.
The scientists scanned (扫描) the brains of children (8~11 years old) and adults (18-35 years old) before, during, and after doing learning task. It turned out that when children learn new things, the amount of GABA rises quickly. But there's little change in adults' brains. This tells us why children are better learners adults.
The finding, the scientists said, should encourage teachers and parents (let) children learn anything from riding a bike playing an instrument in their childhood. It could also (use) to help adults learn faster by increasing the amount of GABA in (they) brains. The best way of increasing GABA is to get enough sleep and exercise.
