In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. And western hosts sometimes look impolite in the eyes of Chinese guests. It is because the guest-host relationship in China is quite different from that in some western countries.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese friend's home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host's way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife's mother, a very kind Chinese lady, doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a nonsmoker, I feel unhappy. Usually, I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that.
In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you should ask, "Is it OK if I smoke? "But don't be surprised if they say, "No, you can't smoke. " In my culture, if you smoke in their house, you are a bad guest, but if they don't allow you to smoke in their house, they are not impolite hosts.
In a word, no matter where you are, the best way. to be a good guest is to get used to the habits of your hosts.
This year, we were learning about Africa in our social studies classes. Our teacher told us that nearly half of the children in Africa are poor. They don't have enough food to eat. They live in dirty houses and sleep on the floor at night. And their villages don't have a school.
As our teacher spoke, I thought about the things that I had in my own life: my music player, my computer, a fridge that is filled with good food, spending money whenever I want to. My biggest worry is what I will do on the weekend. But an African girl's worry is whether she will have anything to eat today.
Our teacher told us that our class could support a village in Africa. All we needed to do was to raise money. With only $250, we could help build a school.
For the next two months, my friends and I worked really hard. Finally, we raised S250. Our teacher helped us send it to the African School Program.
One day, a letter arrived. Our teacher read it aloud to us. A young boy from the village wrote, "Yesterday, we had no hope. Today, we can go to school just like kids all over the world. We will think of you often as we take our lessons in this wonderful school. Thank you, from your friends in Africa!"
Sometimes, a small thing can change others' lives.
Passage 4
Mom Knows Best
When I was a tiny baby crying all night, my mom sang to me and stayed by my side.
When I was tired and hungry, she gave me food and warm arms to sleep in.
When I was two running through the field, she made sure I was safe and kept me from danger.
When I fell and hurt myself, she gave me a hug and lifted me up.
When I was seven coughing badly, she said no ice—cream for me.
When I was nine watching scary movies, she said it'd give me awful dreams
When I was a teen going out with friends, she said, "Please be back by ten!",
Now I'm an adult, thinking back to those times.
I coughed for days after eating that ice—cream.
And had scary dreams after watching that film.
I was late for school from staying out past ten.
Mom knows best, and for me she wanted only the best!
A. But I shouted back angrily, "I should be allowed to watch it! I'm not a baby!" B. But I talked back loudly, "I should be allowed to eat some! Give it to me now!" C. But I talked back again—"I should not be told what to do! I'm seventeen now!" D. I regret talking back, not listening to Mom. |

We live in a small town and almost everyone knows each other. Itto be very quiet. Nothing much ever happened around here. However, these days, something unusual is in our town. Victor, a teacher at my school, is really nervous. When he was interviewed the town newspaper, he said, "Every night we hear strange outside our window. My wife thinks that it could be an animal, but my friends and I think it must be teenagers having fun. My parents called the policemen, but they couldn't find anything strange. They think it might be the wind. I don't think so!"
Victor's next-door neighbor Helen is worried, too. "At , I thought that it might be a dog, but I couldn't see a dog or anything else, either. So I guess it be a dog. But then, what could it be?" One woman in the area saw something running away, but it was dark so she is not sure. "I think it was too to be a dog, " she said. "Maybe it was a bear or a wolf. "
Everyone in our town is feeling uneasy, and everyone has his or own ideas. There must be something visiting the homes in our neighborhood, what is it? We have no idea. Most people hope that this animal or person will simply go , but I do not think that is going to happen. The noise-maker is having too much fun creating fear in the neighborhood.
Do You Know When Basketball Was Invented?
Basketball is a much-loved and active sport that is enjoyed by many for fun and exercise. It is over 100 years old and is played by more than 100 million people in over 200 countries. It is believed that the first basketball game in history was played on December 21, 1891. Then in 1936 in Berlin, it became an event at the Olympics.
Basketball was invented by a Canadian doctor named James Naismith, who was born in 1861. When he was at college teacher, he was asked to think of a game that could be played in the winter. Dr. Naismith created a game to be played inside on a hard floor. Dr. Naismith divided the men in his class into two teams and taught them to play his new game. Players on the same team must work together to get the ball in the other team's basket. At the same time, they need to stop the competing team from getting the ball into their own basket.
Today, the popularity of basketball has risen around the world, with many young people dreaming of becoming famous players. In China, you can sometimes see people playing basketball in parks, schools and even factories. Basketball has not only become a popular sport to play, but it has also become a popular sport to watch. Although America's NBA games are the most famous, the CBA games are becoming popular in China. The number of foreign players, including Chinese players, in the NBA has increased. There are also more and more foreign players in the CBA. Many young people look up to these basketball heroes and want to become like them. These stars encourage young people to work hard to achieve their dreams.
