Kendall spends a lot of time playing in the earth. She has a huge garden that produces over 100 pounds of food each year! But for this seven-year-old girl, gardening isn't just about fruits and vegetables. It's about people. "My favorite thing about growing food is doing it with my family and friends." she says.
Kendall began gardening at the age of three, when her grandmother gave her some potatoes, Grandma told her. "Don't throw away the small ones, because if you put them in the ground, they will grow back." Kendall tried it and was amazed when the small potatoes grew new leaves.
Soon after, her parents put in a small yard garden. When friends came over, Kendall enjoyed sharing what she knew. And she says. "My friends help me water and care for the plants."
At the age of six, she became the youngest licensed farmer in Georgia. Today, her garden has grown to include sixty plant beds and twelve trees! When the vegetables and fruits are ripe(成熟的), Kendall says, "I pick them, then I do a food sale so other kids and families can have some." People who don't have enough food are invited to take what they need.
Kendall is an inspiration to other kids too. She speaks at libraries and schools and hosts a community garden club for kids. "I also invite kids to visit my garden and help me with it, to see how fun it is," she says. "Growing food takes a lot of work, but together you can do it."
For me, one of the greatest pleasures in life is going to watch a great film at the cinema. It's a chance for me to get away from real life. There's nothing better than being lost in a story unless, of course, someone decides to break down the moment.
Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don't seem to understand.
To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surround-sound effects (环绕立体声效果) ,someone begins to enjoy their drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can't stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.
I'm not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo, a film critic at the BBC, experienced a "new low" during a film. He says, "The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her make-up!"
Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. One of them is no use of mobile phones, and another is not to take your shoes off-a most serious offence (冒犯)!
Of course, when we have paid for a ticket, we feel it is our right to relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to but we mustn't forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience, too.
The best choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art of cinematography is on the big screen. ____
What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?
The United States has always been a country of many cultures. Before Europeans came to North America, many groups of Native America lived here. Different Native American groups had different cultures. The first European in the United States were from England and Holland, but immigrants (移民) came from all European countries. Many people also immigrated from Asia and Africa. Sadly, many Africans were brought to the United States to serve the Americans. The life there was hard for them. Many immigrants come from Latin America too. Today, the United States has people from more cultures than ever.
In the 19th century, people thought of the United States as a "melting pot." People thought that all immigrants should forget their native cultures and languages and become English-speaking Americans. They felt that people should assimilate cultures. However, not everyone wanted to assimilate completely. Many people tried to keep parts of their cultures, such as foods, customs, and languages. However, their children often forgot their parents' or grandparents' language. But most Americans, even those whose families have been here a long time, can tell the countries their relatives came from. And of course, new immigrants take great pride in their cultures and languages.
For all of these reasons, melting pot is no longer a good way to describe the United States. Instead, people now call the United States a "salad bowl." They say salad bowl because in a salad, you can still see all of the individual parts (lettuce, tomato, and so on), but all the different parts are mixed together and begin to take on the taste of one another.
The human brain is only two percent of our total body weight, but it needs about 20% of the oxygen that our body takes in. We can't think well if our brain isn't getting enough oxygen. No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory. Here are some tips—none of them can make your memory 100% perfect, but all of them are helpful:
This way the new information becomes more memorable. Later on, think about the conversation with your friend. It will remind you of the information you wanted to remember.
When you've remembered a list of new words, stop studying. It's better to study a lot of material for a small amount(数量)of time than a small amount of material for a lot of time! But remember: you do have to practice your new words often!
If you want to remember something, go to bed-right after learning it. That is to say, it's always a good idea to review what you've learned before bedtime.
For example, it's easier to remember 198756430387 if you break it into four smaller bits: 198-756-430-387.
So sometimes if we want to remember new information, it helps to make a picture story. Anyone can learn to do this. Let yourself be surprised by your memory!
A.Don't over-train your brain. B.Our brains works better in pictures. C.Break something big into small parts. D.Our memory works well when we are asleep. E.Don't get angry because you forget something. F.Tell a friend you want to remember something. |
Once there was a poor boy who lived with his mother in India.
One day, Mother asked the boy, "Would you like 1 from the market?" "More than anything else, I want a drum!" the boy said. Mother sold some grain at the 2 , but there was still not enough money for a drum. 3 , Mother gave the boy a stick she had found. The boy decided not to be 4 . "Thank you," he began to play with his new stick.
Next day, he saw his neighbor trying to 5 a fire. "Please use my stick,! he said. In order to thank the boy, the woman gave him a large jug (罐). 6 , he heard someone crying. "Water!" an old man cried sadly. The boy ran to the well and filled his jug. The man drank and said, "I am a 7 , but robbers stole my goods(货物)." Two frightened horses stood by the trees. The boy held out the jug for them. "You can have my jug to traded," the boy offered. 8 his kindness, the boy was given a horse. What a rich gift! He climbed on the horse and rode down the street. He passed a group of men 9 under a tree. They looked worried. "What's the matter?" asked the boy. One young man said, "I'm going to my wedding, where this band will play. But if I 10 on foot, my bride (新娘) will laugh at me." "You need this horse 11 I do!" he said. "Thank you for being so kind," said one of the musicians. He handed the boy a beautiful 12 . That was exactly 13 he wanted. The boy shouted with joy.
When he got home, the boy told his mother the whole story. "When you are 14 , your good deeds come back to you," Mother said. It was a 15 the boy never forgot.
My hometown is a small town. It is in the (east) part of Zhejiang Province. I left my hometown to work in Singapore 15 years ago. I tried my best to do what I can (make) my life good. It is said great changes have taken place in the past ten years.
Last month I came back to my hometown with my family. To my surprise, my hometown (change) a lot. The environment is getting more beautiful than 15 years ago. The streets are wider and cleaner. is easier for us to travel out. Trees and flowers are planted everywhere. In the past, people traveled by bike. But now they go to work taking buses or driving cars. They will build underground line next year. I am sure traveling (be) better then.
When I got home, my parents were waiting (happy) for us with my other friends at home. At dinner, they told me a lot about the changes in my hometown. I can't imagine my hometown will be like in another ten years.

Hi Wang Ming, How are you doing these days? I'm so glad that I'll meet you in October! I'm interested in the Mid-autumn Festival very much, but I'm sorry that I missed it. Could you tell me something about it? By the way, I want to come to Shaoxing by myself, but my parents think it's too dangerous for me to travel alone. Do you think I should be allowed to travel alone? William |
