Watermelons are one of the most popular fruits in China. It's said that Chinese people1 nearly 70% of the watermelons on the earth. As we enjoy the sweet (甜的) watermelons, we have to2 a great woman Wu Mingzhu. This 92-year-old3 has devoted (致力) her life to growing melons in China.
Wu grew up in Wuhan. In the eyes of others, Wu should have worked as a teacher after finishing university in 1953, but she4 to go to Xinjiang. She thought Xinjiang was a good place for her to do something5 . In 1955, Wu went to Xinjiang to study melons.6 it was hard to live and work there at the time, she didn't give up (放弃). She spent three years7 Xinjiang and found 44 kinds of melons.
In the 1990s, Wu and her team cultivated (培育) "8424", a great kind of watermelon in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Then Wu brought it to the north of China.8 , Wu went to more places to study melons.
Thanks to her, most places in China grow melons now. The yield (产量) is high and the9 is naturally low (低), so people can eat melons as they wish. Wu's work has made a great difference to the growing of melons in China. "My life is to grow a few melons and10 the sweetness of melons to people," Wu always says.
Many animals are in danger around the world. Here are some examples.
The blue whale(蓝鲸) lives in oceans around the world. It is the largest animal in the world, but it eats the smallest animals for food. Many people kill the whales. And not enough clean water is also a problem. There may be only 1,300 blue whales left.
The wild Bactrian camel lives in Northwest China and Mongolia. It is a large camel and the only species(种类) in the world with two humps(驼峰). There are perhaps 950 left in the wild.
Many Asian elephants live in India but you can find them in other countries as well. There are many elephants which work for people. There might be 35,000 Asian elephants left in the wild. |
Li Shizhen was one of the most famous doctors in Chinese history. He was born in Qichun, Hubei in 1518.
Both of Li Shizhen's father and grandfather were doctors. Li Shizhen's grandfather was a country doctor who traveled in the countryside with a bag of herbs (草药) and medications and cured people. His father was a doctor who wrote several books.
Li Shizhen used to help his father in his medical practice when he was young. Li Shizhen's father wanted him to enter politics (从政). Li Shizhen studied for the exams and passed the country-level examination, but he was never able to pass the imperial examination (殿试).
When he was 38, he cured the son of the Prince of Chu and was invited to be a medical official in that court (宫廷). A few years later, he became an official at the Imperial Medical Hospital.
Even though he realized his father's dream, he didn't want to continue working for the court.
One year later, he left the court and returned to be a doctor again.
Li Shizhen was famous for his book, Compendium of Materia Medica《本草纲目》. He spent 27 years writing the book. Unluckily, Li Shizhen died before the book came out officially. It is such a successful book. Now it is still one of the most important medical books in China.
What do you do when you feel unhappy? Do you listen to music? Do you talk to a friend? Maybe next time you feel sad, you should try going outside if it is sunny. Doctors know that how much sunlight we get can change (改变)how we feel. Scientists learn this by asking people who live in different parts of the world. In the far north, in Alaska or Finland, for example, the days are very short in winter. People living in these places say that they often feel unhappy in winter. In the south, where there are more daylight hours, fewer people say they are unhappy in winter. The reason is how much sunlight these people get each day. Sunlight changes the things inside our bodies, and they can change the way we feel. A couple of hours of strong sunlight or light from special lights can help our body make us feel happy. Another way to feel happier is to get some exercise. Just like sunlight, exercise helps our bodies make certain chemicals(化学物质), which make us feel happier. In addition, exercise helps people sleep better. Exercise also helps you get away from stress (压力). When you are angry or upset about something, exercise is a good way to get those bad feelings out of you.
①Eating more. ②Exercising more. ③Getting more sleep. ④Getting more sunlight.
China is a country with many colorful days and festivals. The Dragon Head Raising Day (Longtaitou) is one of them.
This special day is on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, the day fell on March 10.
We Chinese people call ourselves the "descendants (传人) of the dragon". So people celebrate the Dragon Head Raising Day with many customs about dragons.
On the day in old times, people put ashes (灰) in the kitchen. This was to "lead the dragon into the house".
Also, people eat special foods on that day. For example, people eat "dragon whisker (胡须)" noodles and dumplings called "dragon teeth".
Today, many customs have got lost. It was said that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to the mother's brothers. So many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head Raising Day.
A. The dragon is important in Chinese culture. B. It stands for (代表) the start of spring and farming. C. People believed that with the help of the dragon, they could have a good harvest (丰收) in autumn. D. Many people have their hair cut on that day. E. The foods are usually named after dragons. F. But one that has kept till today is the cutting of hair. |
One day, I walked into a stranger (陌生人) as he walked by me. "Oh, excuse me." I said. He saida smile, too. "Please excuse me, too. I wasn't watching out for you." We apologized (道歉) and went our own ways.
Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too close to me. When I reached for some milk, I nearly knocked (撞)(she) over. "Move out of the way." I shouted. She walked away sadly. But I didn't feel like (say) sorry to her.
While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me, "Dealing withstranger, you were polite (礼貌的), but with a daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter (bring) you some flowers that she picked for you this afternoon. You'll find them in the kitchen by the door. Have you seen the tears in her eyes?"
I(quiet) went in and put myself down by my (daughter) bed. "Honey, I am so sorry." I said, "Are these the flowers you picked for me? She said, "I found them by the tree. I picked them they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them, especially the (three) blue one." I tearfully replied, "Sweetie, I'm really sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn't have shouted at you." "It's okay. I love you anyway." she said as she kissed me on my cheek.
If we can be polite to a stranger, why can't we be kind to the ones we love? I come to understand that (important) thing in life is the love between people.
