—Father's Day is coming. I ____ a gift for my father.
—____. Every time I make dishes for Mum, she is very happy.
I sat on the steps next to Peter and watched him play his new guitar. His left hand worked the strings(弦)1 his right hand played.
"Just in time for the school talent show next2 ," I said.
"Are you doing anything for the talent show, Jeremy?" Peter asked.
"No." I said. "If I were a little3 , like you, 14 years old, maybe I could, too. I believe you'll win the first prize this year."
"Maybe." said Peter, "I'm playing a song I4 myself."
"You write your own song?" I asked.
"It's not5 ," he said, "My song is called Two for One, I got the6 easily from a two-for-one sale store. And I liked the sound of Two for One.7 song goes like this: "Two for one. two for one. that's the way to have some fun", I haven't written all the words yet."
The next morning, I saw Peter was so8 . His right arm was broken.
"I got9 when playing baseball yesterday," he said, "Now I can't be in the talent show next week." Peter and I10 each other worriedly. Then I had an idea.
"We could sit next to each other on the stage," I said, "You could play the left-hand parts, and I'll play with my right hand."
Peter's eyes were11 and lively.
"It might work," he said.
I sat12 him on the top step.
"Where can I put my right hand while we13 ?"
"Put it on my shoulder," I told him." We're14 , aren't we?
Our song answered that question. We finished writing the words together15 .
"Two for one, one for two. see what two good friends can do!"

When I was very young, I learned a lot of Chinese characters. My parents patiently taught me how the difference among them. They tried to make me understand the of each character. My grandfather guided me to write the Chinese characters "he" which means "harmony(和谐)".
As I got a little , I met some problems in my life. For example, at school, sometimes I would not get along with my classmates. When I had difficulty in solving these things, I used to write down the character "he" on paper. Then my father hung it on the wall. He said that and harmony are the first things for our Chinese nation. So we choose to be to family and friends for a harmonious family and social relationship.
Now I learn that the Chinese character "he" is one of the most important of traditional culture. Since ancient times, Chinese people have that our only way of surviving(生存) is to live in harmony with nature. Harmony is the first that influences Chinese people's thinking styles and actions.
Our most valuable ideas and culture are the simple character. It teaches us not only how to be a good person but also how to live in harmony with others and the environment.

Fred was a poor man who lived alone in a small village. He was lazy so he didn't want to find a job. He had no friends or relatives. He used to beg(乞讨) for food for his living.
One day, a kind man gave Fred a large bowl of rice. Fred didn't eat up the rice in one go. He put the remaining rice on the table. He lay on his bed and kept an eye on it. After a while, Fred fell asleep and had a dream. He dreamed that there was a famine(饥荒) in his village. He sold his remaining rice and got some money. He used the money to buy a pair of goats(山羊). His goats had kids in months, so he got more goats. He sold some goats, became very rich and then bought a large house.
Fred dreamed that he was dancing happily in his large house. He felt so excited that he kicked in air and his leg hit the bowl on the table. The bowl with rice dropped and broke into pieces. The noise woke him up. At once, Fred realized that everything that happened was just a dream. He also realized that he could get nothing if he didn't make a change. Then he decided to get rid of(改掉) his laziness. Soon, he found a job, worked hard and gradually lived a better life.
①We can see circles, squares and triangles(三角形) everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? Much like colors, different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.
②Circles represent (代表) things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, flowers, raindrops and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies' round faces. All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters' bodies—heroes, kids, good people—are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness. ③Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In Up, Carl, an elderly man, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters' personalities. Carl is stubborn(执拗的) and lonely while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
④The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don't they? That's because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons—they are all draw with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable(稳固的) and don't easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
⑤Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, next time you see a film, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
Vicuna is a small town in the north of Chile. It is a great place for watching the stars. Although it is near the sea, the cold, wet air from the coast does not bring clouds. Instead, dry winds from the desert keep the cloud away at night. In fact, the skies are so clear in Vicuna. So it is possible for people to see many stars. They can be seen only with special instruments in other parts of the world.
In Vicuna, star systems(星系) far away can be seen without an instrument. This is why people choose the town as the home of sky observatories(天文台). One of them, the Mamalluca, is quite different from those only used by scientists. It is for tourists who like to look at the stars. Around the whole year, hotels in the town accommodate thousands of tourists from all over the world to see the night sky. The tourists live in the hotel and spend a lot of money there. The cloudless sky is a money-maker for the town. So the town plans to set up even more observatories in another few years.
However, the town faced a serious problem. As the town grew, more streetlights were added. The streetlights made it more and more difficult to see the stars at night clearly. The town saved the night sky by building a new system of lights. This kind of light light up the streets, but did not influence the view of the sky.
A thirsty crow(乌鸦) comes across a bottle of water, but the water level is out of its reach. The bird then drops stones into it to reach the water and start drinking.
"It's just a story," you may think. But new research has found that crows' brains may sometimes be better than those of 6-year-old children.
In a recent experiment, American scientist Corina Logan and her team caught six crows to test them. The crows and children had to choose between two sets of tubes(管子). Both groups had to drop in stones to reach the water.
With the red set, when they dropped a stone into a wide tube, the water level rose in a connected narrow(窄的) tube. The blue set of tubes, however, had no connection between them. Children aged 7 to 10 were able to learn the rule. Children aged 4 to 6, however, failed. Five of the six crows failed the test. But Kitty, a 6-month-old crow, passed it. She put most of the stones into the red tube.
So, could a bird be more clever than a kindergartener? Don't be too quick to say no.
These days so many things are going digital(数字化), and books are too. . This means that some bookstores have a hard time staying open. This isn't a new problem, but things are finally turning around.
