Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) (中药) is an important part of Chinese culture. TCM has a long history. The 1 medical classic in China, Huangdi's Classic on Medicine (黄帝内经), came out more than 2,000 years ago. The book is about the 2 between man and nature. In Chinese culture, yin and yang are the two parts of nature. Nature keeps balanced if yin and yang work 3 together. The human body needs such a 4 too. TCM helps to do that.
Quite specially, for some health problems, a doctor of TCM does not give you medicine. 5 , he may give you just a good plan and right ways to eat. For example, it is common to eat 6 the way to school, at our work desk, or in front of the TV. However, TCM thinks it's 7 . Here are the correct ways: Sit down to eat. While eating, turn off the TV and 8 from the work desk. Eat seasonal foods. Do not miss any of the three meals. Also, get your body 9 often. Just as the saying goes, running water is never stale. So do exercise more often.
Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine is becoming more and more 10 around the world. A government report says people in 183 countries and areas are now using TCM.
Mr and Mrs Brown have two children, Mike and Liz. The whole family are all busy, so they often leave notes(便 条 ) for each other. Read these four notes of today and answer the following questions.
①3:30 p. m. To Mike, Mr Tyler rang. No football practice today. I'm going to Donna's house to play and be back at 5:00 p. m. Liz | ②4:00 p. m. To Liz, It's your turn to walk the dog. I have to do my homework after school. Remember to play with Teddy when you get home! Mike |
③6:45 p. m. Has anyone seen my tennis shoes? I'm in my bedroom doing my homework. Mike | ④9:00 p. m. I saw your shoes this morning. They smelt terrible so I put them outside the back door. Good night, dears! Mum |
On our second day in China, we had already been asked to join the school for supper. Nervous and unsure of the food and table manners, we politely agreed. Coming to China, the thing I was most nervous about was the food, and now my first dining experience would be with the school staff.
In Chinese culture the most important person sits facing the door. When plates of food started arriving, I wished I had practiced my chopstick skills before arriving in China.
Chinese culture is all about being hospitable (好客的). This means ordering lots of food and encouraging you to keep eating. It also means drinking wine or tea. You'll never have an empty glass.
It's polite to try everything, but if you know me, you would know I don't eat everything. Fresh fish? Sure, an entire fish on the plate staring at you while you pick at it. Not for me. Snails with their shell crushed and cooked into a meal? No thanks! The lung of a pig? I'll pass. It seems that the Chinese really eat everything!
The Chinese people are friendly. They want to learn about you and teach you about their culture. They like to ask questions, and it is polite to ask them many questions and keep the conversation going.
Every day I'm pushed out of my comfort zone (舒适区). But for the most part, I discover something I really enjoy. The experience itself is quite amazing, I've learned a lot, yet there's still so much to learn. It surely is different from my culture and way of living, but being in their shoes and seeing life through their eyes has really helped me to understand. And I look forward to discovering more!
① Love them or hate them, emojis (表情符号) have become an important part of our twenty-first-century culture. Over 90% of the world's 4.6 billion internet users send them every day. In 2015, Oxford Dictionaries chose Face With Tears of Joy as its Word of the Year.
② However, some language experts are against this form of communication. They consider it a step back into the dark ages of illiteracy. Emojis, they say, are making us lose the ability to speak. People are depending on these "picture characters" rather than words to express their feelings.
③ I want to challenge this opinion. I'm afraid these experts have misunderstood how communication works.
④ Emojis aren't taking the place of language. Instead, they are making our messages more understandable. Here is an example. Without an emoji, what means by the following message would be puzzling (迷惑): "Hey, I fell over and got my head hit on the kitchen cupboard." My friend on the other side of the phone might have difficulty working out my true feelings. Should he laugh ("Ha-ha! You're so silly!" or take pity on me ("Oh. Hope it doesn't hurt too badly")? However, using an emoji ( or ) will spell out the meaning behind my words. Emojis are to text messages what body language is to spoken communication. They allow us to communicate better.
⑤ So, as long as we don't overuse emojis, these lovely characters are helpful.
My dear boys and girls, good morning. Today I'm going to talk to you about my understanding of learning history.
You may often wonder why we students should study something that has nothing to do with our own lives. If you think that way, I should say you are far from the truth.
Studying the past helps us to understand what our ancestors' lives were like. And it also helps us to see how their experiences have shaped our own life.
To be honest, not everything that happened in the past is good. And these mistakes will help people not to do the same wrong things. People often learn from the past to have a better future.
Whether we like the subject of history or not, we must understand the importance of the events and the people who came before us. And the decisions of our own generation (一 代 ) will eventually(最终) influence those who come after us.
History is not just a study of the past. History is the study of people, places, and events that can influence the future.
Now do you still think studying history is a sad thing? If you have any question, just feel free to ask.
A. In this only way, the world is truly connected. B. Or do you have any doubt about learning history? C. Some of them help us understand the mistakes of the past. D. In fact, if we study history, we can learn quite a lot about personal stories and events. E. Many of you may think it is a terrible thing to study history. |
Last summer, President Xi Jinping came to Cuiyun Corridor(翠云廊 ) and personally experienced the unique beauty of the ancient cypresses (柏 树 ), most of which are more than one thousand years old. Cuiyun corridor is a(history) path in Jiange Countyis also famous for Jianmen Pass(剑门关 ). It was built in the Qin and Han dynasties. People planted more trees along the road and repaired it in the following dynasties. This effort is now (know) as Cuiyun corridor.
One of the most impressive historical(story)connected with Cuiyun Corridor is the Emperor Liu Bei and his brother Guan Yu from the Three Kingdoms period. It is (say) that during their journey to Western Shu, they met enemies while (cross)
Cuiyun Corridor. However, they managed(escape)with their intelligence . According to the legend, during their escape, Liu Bei and Guan Yu used the dense(茂密的) cypress forest on both sides of Cuiyun Corrior to cover their positions from the chasers(追兵).
However, many trees are danger now because of some reasons. We are sorry to see the(die) of some trees. President Xi encouraged us (take) active actions now to protect our old trees and create a more beautiful living environment.
Food waste is common in many schools. Students at Whitewater Middle School in the US once found 200 pounds (90.7 kg) of food had been thrown away after just one of their school's daily meals. They said it was both unpleasant and educational.
A student said, "You don't realize how much food waste you're making till you see it." To deal with this problem, Whitewater has added environmental science as a new school program this year. Teachers will lead students to do research about how food connects with the environment, poverty (贫穷) and people's health.
Whitewater teachers make sure students know how their own eating habits are part of bigger problems. In environmental literature (文学) classes, students read books such as Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.
Teacher Lyman says that in language arts classes, students discuss why poor people often have less healthy food. Lyman says she wants students to ask themselves some basic questions: "What do we eat? What do we waste?"
