A dragon boat race will be held in our city tomorrow. No matter what the result is, we are excited about the 1 .
I was lucky enough to be 2 for the team of our university last year. Each of us had different levels of fitness (体质) at the beginning. When I could only lift 5 kilos for the 3 time, others could lift 30 already. We cheered ourselves up and always trained together 4 we were all in the same boat. We took 5 in our progress. Sometimes, we 6 each other with just eye contact (接触).
One day, after five hours of training, I was so 7 that I couldn't go on. 8 , I saw the teammates beside and in front still trying their best to row (划). I realized that if I stopped, it would be 9 for our boat to go forward. So I had to keep going 10 we reached the end. Pulling together is the most treasured thing we have when we are in the dragon boat.
Tin loves the 11 of our team. As our coach, he 12 believes that everyone has their own talent. All their ability can be brought out as long as it is 13 in the right place. Actually, we could not afford to 14 anyone of our team, or we won't win. When we are rowing, we are a big 15 .
Now we are ready for the coming dragon boat race.
Music, mood(心情), and health
When we turn on the radio and listen to a good song, we cheer up, but scientific music influences our brains and bodies in many other ways.
If you turn up the volume (音量) and sing along to your favourite songs, it's good for your heart and health. But if other people can hear the music from your headphones, you should turn down the volume — it can cause you hearing problems.
If you listen to fast music while you run outside, it can improve your health and help you to speed up your running. But you mustn't listen to music when you're cycling because it may cause an accident.
Listening to music can help you to pay more attention to your homework. But it's better to listen to music without lyrics.
Learning to play an instrument can increase your IQ because you have to use both sides of your brain.
Music helps people to calm down(镇定下来). Relaxing music slows down your heartbeat and breathing. It can also help reduce(减少) pain. |
On March 21,2022,a China Eastern Airlines MU 5735 with 132 people aboard crashed(撞毁) in Guangxi. It dropped from 8,869 meters to l,333.5 meters in just three minutes. After days of searching, its two black boxes were finally found. That brought the hope of understanding what caused the country's worst airline disaster in years.
However, what are black boxes? A black box is also known as the flight recorder. Every plane has at least two black boxes. Usually, one is in the front and the other is in the back. They record everything about a flight such as its speed, altitude(高度), conversations, and air pressure among other things. The information helps to discover what lead to an accident and prevent similar accidents in the future. Therefore, black boxes are usually installed on each plane.
The use of black boxes dates back to the early 1950s. It's said an Australian scientist named Dr. David Warren made the invention. He realized that people who can best explain what happened are unluckily dead. Then the idea of a voice recorder to be present in flights was born.
Although it is called black box, it is neither black in color, nor looks like a box. It is painted in bright orange color. So the people looking for it can have the best chance to find it. It is not certain how it got its name.
Each box weighs about 4.5kg. They are generally made out of special materials. This helps them survive(生存) from heat, cold or wetness. To make black boxes easier to discover under water, they can let out signals(信号) for 30 days.
Zhi Nong was born in a small town in Yunnan Province. When he was young, he moved to Kunming with his mother. Feeling like a caged (笼中的) bird in big city, he was bored with the busy and noisy city life and looked forward to nature.
His chance soon came. In 1983, he helped shoot a documentary about birds. That experience led him to learn photography and take photos of flying birds.
In the 1980s, the Internet was not that popular in China and cameras were expensive. He managed to borrow a camera and threw himself into studying how to use it. During that time, the library became his favorite place where he first read some magazines about nature. It opened a door for him to connect with nature.
In 1992, a research program was organized to protect a type of unusual monkeys which only live in China. Usually the home of these monkeys has half-a-year-long winters. It created great challenges for Zhi Nong's work, but he never drew back. "I didn't see the monkeys in the wild until I went into the mountains the third time," said Zhi Nong. He went into the snow mountains six times just to get valuable photographs of the monkeys.
Three years later, his works won international prizes. People around the world began to pay attention to the protection of wild animals in China. And he is the first Chinese winner of the world Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
In order to call up tons of people to protect wildlife with cameras, he started "China Wildlife Photography Training Camp". He hopes that more young people will join in for the nature protection.
a. He won some prizes in the world.
b. He joined in shooting a documentary.
c. He took some pictures of monkeys.
d. He set up a camp to train photographers.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is used to help people keep the balance of yin and yang. But have you ever imagined that one day you can learn herb (药草) planting and TCM courses at school?
A primary school in Nanjing has just a herb farm. More than 30 herbs are planted. Students there are by doctors from a TCM hospital to tell different herbs and learn plant development, medicinal value as well as herbs. The hospital has also donated over 100 cartoon books about TCM to help draw children's in herbal medicine.
Another middle school has TCM courses to students of all grades. These courses a basic knowledge of herbs, herb planting and cooking with herbs. They give students a deeper understanding of TCM, bringing out their sense of in Chinese traditions and the country's rich culture.
Also in Shanghai, Tongji University has provided foreign students some chances to plant different kinds of herbs used in Chinese medicine and cooking. By taking care of the plants, foreign students can get first-hand experience of making herbal medicine from start to finish, and spread TCM culture to their countries.
The herb planting courses at schools and universities across China get students close to TCM and help pass on the tradition.
About 2300 years ago, the area around Chengdu had bad floods (洪水) in spring every year. Flood water from the mountains flowed (流动) down the Minjiang River and covered the land. Luckily, the Qin governor (太守), Li Bing, was a water engineer. The king of Qin provided the money and asked the governor to solve the problem.
The usual method to avoid flooding is to build a wall across the river, called a dam. Special openings in the dam allow the flow of water to be controlled. However, the king had also asked Li Bing to make sure that ships could still use the river. This was necessary because the king needed to send food to his army. So Li Bing studied the situation and came up with a plan—a plan that still works today!
Helped by his son, and tens of thousands of workers from the area, Li Bing built a man-made island in the middle of the river. This island was shaped like a fish and it divided the water into an inner and an outer river. The inner river was deeper than but not as wide as the outer river. It took four years to build the island.
Li Bing also cut a new channel (运河) through Mount Yulei. This channel would take water away to irrigate (灌溉) the land in the flat farmland below. The rock of the mountain was very hard and difficult to cut. Li Bing used fire to heat the rock and then water to cool it quickly. This made the rock break into smaller pieces which could be carried away more easily. Cutting the channel took eight years!
After Li Bing's work was finished, there were no more floods, and the Dujiangyan irrigation system (灌溉系统) allowed the farmers to grow more and more food. The river flowed naturally, and because there was no dam, ships and fish could pass freely. Sichuan became the most productive area in China, as it still is today. Today, scientists and visitors from all over the world come to look at this wonderful example of engineering. This work and the name of Li Bing live on.
