Serena Williams and Ruby Bridges will be chosen into the National Women' s Hall of Fame in March next year. The American organization in Seneca Falls, New York made the announcement Thursday.
The tennis superstar and the human rights leader were added to the list to be honored during Women' s History Month in March. Eight other winners were announced in the spring.
The 42-year-old Williams has won main events in tennis, called Grand Slam events, 23 times. She holds the record for the longest ranking(排名)as the top competitor. She retired from tennis last year. Earlier this month, Williams became the first athlete to win the Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
The 69-year-old Bridges was six years old when she became the first black student at a Louisiana public school, where non-whites had been refused. The event took place in 1960. In 1963, painter Norman Rockwell recreated the event in his painting, The Problem We All Live With. Bridges built the Ruby Bridges Foundation in 1999. It offers educational programs and resources to guide and support the younger toward a peaceful future.
For the first time, the ceremony(典礼)will be broadcast(播出)nationally in the best time from New York City, the Hall of Fame said. The American public chooses women to be considered for the Hall of Fame. A group of experts examines them and makes the final decision.
The symbol of Thanksgiving in the United States is its traditional food, a large bird we call the " turkey" . But the turkey is certainly not from Turkey. In fact, its English name is based on one big mistake. We could say it is a case of mistaken identity.
The word " Turkey" has meant " the land of the Turks" since ancient times. The word " turkey" which refers to the bird first appeared in the English language in the mid-1500s.
The misunderstanding over the word happened because of two similar-looking kinds of birds. There is an African bird called the guinea fowl. Portuguese traders brought the guinea fowl to Europe through North Africa.
This foreign bird came to Europe through Turkish lands. So, the English thought of the bird as a " Turkish chicken" . When Europeans came to North America, they saw a bird that looked like the guinea fowl. This bird was native to the North American continent.
Orin Hargraves is a lexicographer, someone who writes dictionaries. Hargraves elucidates what happened. " Some Europeans saw an American turkey, thought that it was the guinea fowl, which at that time was called the ‘ turkey cock' , and so gave it the same name. "
Hundreds of years later, we continue to call this North American bird " turkey" , even though it has no connection at all with the country Turkey, or even with Europe. But English is not the only language with interesting— and even questionable— names for this North American bird.
The Turkish, for their part, call the turkey " hindi" , the Turkish name for India. The mention to India probably comes from the old, wrong idea that the New World was in Eastern Asia. The French call it " dinde" , a name that also connects the bird to India. " D' Inde" means " from India" in the French language. " Turkey:" has similar names in several other languages. So, what do they call this North American bird in India? Well, in the Hindi language, " turkey" is " tarki" .
A new study says that no matter how much the world cuts back on greenhouse gases, a large and important part of ice of Antarctica(南极洲)is expected to disappear.
Researchers used computer models to expect the future melting(融化)of protective ice around Antarctica' s Amundsen Sea in western Antarctica. They said the melting will take hundreds of years. It will slowly add nearly 1. 8 meters to sea levels. And it will be enough to change where and how people live in the future.
The study found that even if future warming was limited to just a few tenths of a degree more, it would have limited power to prevent ocean warming that could lead to the breakdown of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
Study lead writer Kaitlin Naughten is an expert on oceans at the British Antarctic Survey. She said their research suggests that Earth is set on the path to a quickly increasing speed of ocean warming and ice shelf melting over the rest of the century.
While past studies have talked about how serious the situation is, Naughten was the first to use computer modeling to study how warm water from below will melt the ice. The study looked at four different cases in how much greenhouse gases the world produces. In each case, ocean warming was just too much for this area of the ice to survive.
Naughten looked at floating areas of ice that hold back glaciers(冰川). Once these areas of ice melt, there is nothing to stop the glaciers behind them from flowing(流)into the sea.
The study also looked at what would happen if future warming was limited to 1. 5 degrees Celsius over mid-19th century levels:the international goal. They found the rapid melting process in this case as well.
The world has already warmed about 1. 2 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times and much of this summer went past the 1. 5 degrees mark.

Dear John,

When I was a young father, every weekend and festival, my wife and I would take our kids to her family gathering. It always took place at a picnic area on the side of a mountain. On the top of the mountain was her family' s house. The road to the top of it wasn' t quite smooth. Even when the weather was fine, it was a difficult ride with a dirt road full of potholes, sharp turns, and sticking rocks that could break the bottom of your car if you hit them wrong.
If it had recently rained, you had to go quick, or you ran the risk of getting your car stuck in the mud. Cars would roar up the road fast, and then look for parking spots along the side of the hill in the grassy areas. You always had to keep your eyes on the road even when you were stepping out of your car.
On one of these gatherings, I remember seeing a small tortoise(乌龟)enjoying sunlight on the top of a rock near the end of the road near a small wood, which belonged to my wife' s family. I watched as one car sped by and almost hit him on the right. Then another car ran past even faster and nearly knocked him off the stone on the left.
The small tortoise pulled his head into his shell(壳)both times, thinking that would protect him, but I knew if one car ran over the little tortoise, he would be dead. I quickly walked over and picked him up before the next car came speeding up the hill. Then I walked him deep into the nearby woods. Finally, I found another stone where he might enjoy the sun in safety and left him there in peace.
Unfortunately, on this road, I often found dead or injured small animals.
