Norman Rockwell didn't create his celebrated images using only brush and paint. They often took shape first as scenes that Rockwell literally acted out, not only for his editors atthe Saturday Evening Post, but for his real-life models, too. "It was difficult," he once explained, "but I felt it was the best way to get across my meaning." And so he would enthusiastically play out his visions and ideas, a one-man show packed with just the right expressions, giving enough details of each character in the scene to inspire his models and more importantly, get his editors to buy his ideas.

Now, more than 30 years after his death, Rockwell is still acknowledged for skillfully documenting the best of 20th century American life with drawings of simple emotions inspired by everyday people. To create his detailed recollections of everyday American life, Rockwell worked much like a film director, not just acting out the scenes in his imagination, but looking for locations, casting everyday people from his town for particular parts.

The recognition he received strongly proves Rockwell's superior skills as a storyteller and is the subject of another kind of one-man show: the upcoming exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., titledTelling Stories:Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. The exhibit, gathered together from the private collections of these two popular film directors, will feature rarely viewed pieces of Rockwell's artworks.

That concentration of information as well as emotion is something essential in Rockwell's art. Emotion certainly spoke to Steven Spielberg when he first saw one of his favorite Rockwell paintings,High Dive, the August 16, 1947 Post cover that describes a boy at the top of what must be a towering diving board. He crouches (蹲伏) high above a swimming pool, too afraid to either jump or climb back down. The painting hangs in Spielberg's office at Amblin Entertainment because it holds a great deal of meaning for the filmmaker.

    1. (1) How did Norman Rockwell successfully influence his editors?
A . By performing his ideas. B . By hiring more models. C . By donating his paintings. D . By drawing actual events.
    2. (2) What were the subjects of Rockwell's works?
      A . Film directors. B . Folk storytellers. C . Natural landscapes. D . Ordinary citizens.
    3. (3)  What may the boy in the painting High Dive inspire the viewers to do?
A . Develop artistic skills. B . Learn how to act out. C . Appreciate nature. D . learn to swim.
    4. (4) What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A . To introduce an exhibit. B . To recommend a painting. C . To remember an artist. D . To explain a cultural phenomenon.

How much of your monthly grocery list ends up in the garbage? A new study reveals the average American spends nearly $1,500 per year on food they'll never eat.

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans reveals the average shopper wastes $1,493.93 on food per year. That's almost a fifth of their grocery bill after every shopping trip. One tenth of respondents claim they "never" purchase food they don't end up eating, while three in 10 say this is something they "always" do.

Half of respondents prefer to head to the grocery store alone, and when they do, half are more likely to stick to their list and 36% are less likely to buy food they don't want or need.

Keeping the list in mind is important, as 38 percent are more likely to let food be wasted if it wasn't originally on their shopping list. Seven in 10 add that when they go to the store on an empty stomach, they're more likely to buy foods they won't eat. So they don't do that that way. Some respondents appear to be in a wasteful cycle when it comes to food waste. Nearly half usually buy and end up wasting the same food every month because they think they'll get around to eating it.

"We can all do better to limit food waste by sticking to grocery lists and, when we get home, prioritizing eating our foods that are perishable, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products" says Avocado Co-Founder and CMO Mark Abrials in a statement.

Three-quarters feel guilty about throwing away uneaten food because it's a waste of money—and 48 percent feel the same, due to the harm food waste causes to the environment. "When it comes to food waste, nobody is perfect," Abrials adds. "But in order to consider our environmental impact, not to mention wasted money, we think it's essential to be thoughtful about everything we purchase—whether that's food, mattresses or other goods."

    1. (1)  What percentage of food do people buy but never eat?
      A . About 10%. B . About 20%. C . About 30%. D . About 50%.
    2. (2)  What is the shopping habit of the majority of respondents?
A . Doing shopping alone. B . Avoiding shopping while hungry. C . Sticking to the shopping list. D . Trying to buy fewer dairy products.
    3. (3) Which of the following can replace the underlined part "are perishable" in paragraph 5?
A . Go bad easily. B . Are rich in nutrition. C . Are easy to produce. D . Keep fresh for a long time.
    4. (4)  What does Abrials want to express in the last paragraph?
A . Less doing shopping means less food is wasted. B . Treasuring food is treasuring the environment. C . It's worth spending more money on food safety. D . Environment protection is as important as food.

You might want to think twice before going to the movies on date night. A new study reveals why.

The UK-based Betway Casino conducted a scientific experiment to determine how much bacteria can be found at movie theaters. Betway swabbed (擦拭) five seats and five cup-holders in five theaters across the United Kingdom and sent these off for testing at a microbiology laboratory. Betway also swabbed and tested three toilet seats for comparison. The average number of bacteria colonies for movie theater seats, cup holders, and toilet seats was then calculated.

The research indicates a shocking presence of 1,864 bacteria colonies on an average movie theater seat, dwarfing (使渺小) the 135 colonies typically found on toilet seats by 14 times. This suggests that the nearly 7.3 billion tickets expected to be sold in movie theaters worldwide in 2024 could contribute to an environment ripe for bacteria growth. Meanwhile, the variation in cleanliness among different theaters and seat materials was noted, with the dirtiest seat harboring up to 3,000 colonies and the cleanest at just 80. Perhaps more shocking is the discovery that cinema cup holders contain an average of 2,396 bacteria colonies. This figure represents 18 times more bacteria than found on a standard toilet seat.

Betway offers practical advice to ensure movie enthusiasts can continue enjoying their outings without taking home unwanted microbial (微生物的) gifts kept as reminders of the outings. Recommendations include washing hands immediately after returning home, and changing clothes to avoid spreading bacteria to furniture. While the cinematic world offers a gateway to unique storytelling and entertainment, it also exposes moviegoers to a hidden microbial universe. By adopting simple practices, moviegoers can minimize their risk and focus on the magic of the movies, free from concern over the bacteria sharing their seats.

    1. (1)  What does paragraph 2 focus on regarding the experiment?
      A . Its reason. B . Its process. C . Its limitation. D . Its application.
    2. (2) How does the author present Betway's findings?
      A . By giving examples. B . By stating an argument. C . By making comparisons. D . By describing a prediction.
    3. (3) What is the author's tone when talking about Betway's advice?
      A . Doubtful. B . Objective. C . Dismissive. D . Humorous.
    4. (4)  What is the best title for the text?
A . Movie Theater Seats Covered by Many Bacteria B . Setting up Theaters' Standards of Cleanliness C . Species of Bacteria Colonies in Theaters D . Staying Away from Movie Theater Seats

When Julia Harlin's liver (肝) began failing several years ago as a result of a serious illness, her only option for survival was to get a liver transplant (移植).

Due to a long waiting list, Julia would need to wait months or years to find a person with a matching blood type, who'd like to donate his or her liver, as well as other medical characteristics—and as a senior citizen, time wasn't exactly on her side.

"They basically told me, it would probably be at least five years, if not longer, before I would get the transplant," Julia, 71, of Frederick, Maryland, recalled during an interview.

Despite having five children of her own, Julia said she did not want any of them to donate their liver to her "because then I would be worrying about them on top of worrying about myself".

Without their mom's knowledge, however, Julia's daughter Eileen Harlin and her two other brothers and sister applied to donate their liver, which would reduce their mom's wait time, although it would require a major surgery.

Eileen got the call that she was a match right before Mother's Day. Deciding that Mother's Day was the best time to tell her parents, Eileen began the conversation, "Hey, don't get mad. For the past few months, I've been getting tested to see if I'm a match. And I am, and I want to do it." The news was met with tears all around. Happy tears. How can you be mad when the daughter just said she was going to save her mom's life? "It was emotional for sure," Eileen shared.

The liver transplant was carried out successfully on Aug. 16, 2022, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, according to a press release from the hospital. Unfortunately, Julia received additional bad news not long after the surgery. She was experiencing kidney (肾) failure due to the kidney damage.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Julia's doctors said that the condition required her to get a new kidney.

Eileen saved her mom's life twice.
