On a trip to California,my family stopped for lunch. As we walked towards the restaurant,a man with dirty hair opened the door for us.He greeted us in a friendly way.
When we sat around a table,my daughters said, "Mom,his hair has a terrible1 ." After we ordered our lunch,I told my kids not to say anything that might 2 him.We then watched other customers go into the restaurant but many didn't even take a look at him.Their rude behavior made me 3 .The day I became a mother,I had decided to set a good 4 for my children.Yet sometimes when things didn't go right, being a good example was 5 .When our meal arrived,I 6 I had left my medicine in the car,so I left the table to fetch it.
Just then, the "doorman" was opening the door for a couple, but they felt like he wasn't there at all. After letting them in first,I said a7 "thank you" to him and went out.
When I returned,we talked a bit.He said he was not allowed inside 8 he bought food.I went back and told my family his 9 .Then I asked our waitress to add one soup and sandwich. The kids looked 10 because we had already eaten, but when I said the order was for the "doorman',they smiled. When it was time to 11 our trip,I noticed the "doorman" enjoying his meal. When he saw me,he stood up to 12 me by shaking hands with me.I suddenly noticed the tears of gratitude (感激) in his eyes. What happened next made the kids feel more 13 .I gave the "doorman" a hug.He walked away, with tears pouring down his face.
Back in the car,I fell into deep thought. While we can't decide many things in life,we can make a 14 when to show gratitude.I said thanks to a man who had 15 held a door open for me,and also said thanks for that opportunity to teach my children by example.

When I walked into the house after school,I found my dad at home.
"What are you doing home already?" I asked casually.
"Andrew,I was laid off (解雇) today," he answered quietly.
I was sure he was joking. "No,you weren't.Why are you really home?"
Then I noticed his expression and realized he was telling the truth. My father has always been a hard worker and was proud of himself on his career (职业).My father's unemployment (失业) created many changes in our lives. He was home all day, which meant my bed had to be made,my room cleaned up,and my homework done right after school.I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs.I began to notice how down he seemed, and how losing his job had affected (影响) his self-esteem (自尊心),though he tried to be optimistic (乐观).He asked my brother and me to spend less money.I gave up my pocket money, though it wasn't much, felt like the right thing to do.I also found a part-time job.
After several difficult months of searching,my dad decided to go in a totally different direction. He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again,so he was going to start his own business.Day by day,I watched him build it,and I admired (羡慕) how much time and energy he spent on it.
One evening I asked if he needed help. "Only if it doesn't interfere (妨碍) with school," he said, which sounded like a yes.
I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months.I always knew he was a hard worker, but watching him in action really touched me.Although this was one of the worst experiences for our family,it taught me a lot about dealing with adversity. Now I know that through clever problem-solving,I can always find plans, ask for help, and take risks.
We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. However, there's always something staring at us right under our nose but we don't see it.The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst.
When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us.When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad.We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult.
The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we ignore it.
Change will happen, like it or hate it.At one point or another.we are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so.But because we realize it's for our own good.
Happy people don't just accept change;they embrace (拥抱)it.Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are.It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.
Jane always tells everyone that she doesn't have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people.Over the years, that is what Jane has believed.Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room.Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!
Self-improvement may not be everybody's favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way,we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved.Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life.Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we're beginning to take things light and become happy.
