"What is the meaning of life? " It is a question that I have asked myself many times over the years.
The 1 answer I ever found was "The meaning of life is to give life meaning. "
"When I was a young boy, I gave my life meaning by 2 playing, running, swimming, laughing, and riding my bike.
When I went to school, I gave my life meaning by learning, studying hard, getting good grades and trying to 3 my mom and dad proud (骄傲的) .
In college, I found meaning by 4 what I wanted to study and what career (职业) I wanted to 5 for.
When I was working as a 6 , I found meaning by helping 7 young minds to new ideas and old wisdom.
When I got married, I found meaning in protecting (保护) , providing for, and watching over those I loved. And when I found out that both of my sons were born 8 mental (精神的) illnesses, I found meaning in loving them, 9 them, and learning from them about love, patience, faith, and joy.
As I got 10 , I began to realize that meaning isn't something that comes and 11 . We can give meaning to every moment of our lives here. We can bring meaning to the 12 we think. We can bring meaning to the things we do. We can bring meaning to the 13 we touch. We are responsible for 14 our own meaning. All we have to do is to love ourselves and 15 . It is love that gives life meaning. It is love that makes life worth living.
Eco-friendly Houses
Some people think about building wooden houses. They deal with the wood in a special way. So the house is better to prevent fire and ants. The best thing is that the house is covered with green plants everywhere. This can help to take in greenhouse gases in the city. We might see a few houses similar(相似的) to this now. But they will become more common in the future.
Underground Skyscrapers
They are buildings underground. They go many stories into the ground. People can live, work and do sports all underground. During earthquakes, these buildings will not fall. Mexico is thinking about building a skyscraper like this. It looks like a pyramid upside down(倒金字塔). There is an empty space in the center of the building. So people underground can enjoy natural light(自然光) and air.
Many companies think of building floating houses. Instead of using electricity, floating houses will use solar power. They can rise, fall and turn indifferent directions with the moving water. People can also grow plants on roofs. How do they water the plants? By recycling waste water!
Something caught my eyes when I was walking down the street. Two silver coins were shining in a melting snow bank, so I dug through the snow looking for more. Of course, I just ended up with really cold hands. I slipped the two coins into my pocket and went home, colder but richer. I began to think about how to spend the money…
Two days later, Mary and her little sister were searching the snow banks. "Finders are keepers" was my first thought. I didn't want to hand them out even though Susy was already crying. "I dropped them right here, " she said between tears. Her hands were cold and red for digging in the snow. "Maybe they slid down the street with the melting snow. Let's dig over here." Mary's voice sounded confident.
"They'll never know" was my second thought, and I walked past them. "Phil, have you seen two silver coins?" asked Mary. Susy looked up from digging. Her eyes were hopeful.
"Tell a lie" was my third thought. "As a matter of fact, " I hesitated(犹豫), "I dug two coins out of that snow bank just a few days ago. I wondered who might have lost them." Susy hugged me with a big smile, "Oh, thank you, thank you."
a. Phil found two silver coins in the snow.
b. Susy dropped two silver coins.
c. Phil dug through the snow.
d. Susy kept digging in the snow for her lost coins.
How can kids become heroes? Do they have to save the world? No. To become a hero, kids have to think about what others need and find a way to help. Katie Stagliano is one of those two kids.
Katie loved to garden. When she was young, she harvested(收获) huge cabbage which weighed 40 pounds. The cabbage was far bigger than what her family needed, so she thought about what to do with it.
She knew that there were lots of hungry people in South California, where she lived. ★ . It turned out that her kind donation(捐赠) helped more than 275 people.
Then Katie thought about other gardeners(园艺爱好者) who had more vegetables than they could eat. Suddenly, she saw a way to solve both problems. Katie realized that she could help fight against hunger by encouraging kids to plant vegetable gardens and donate their harvest to hungry people. That's how Katie's Krops was born.
Katie says, "My dream is that there are no hungry people. "To make that dream come true, Katie got her whole school involved. The students planted a huge garden, but Katie knew she could do more. She turned to an organization(组织) called Fields to Families, which sent master gardener to help.
"It's so great to help people, "Katie adds, "but kids don't have to grow huge cabbages. If they could grow even one vegetable plant and donate it to a local soup kitchen, we could make a huge difference in the fight against hunger".
It's been several years since Katie Stagliano started work on her dream. Today, more than 60 gardens around the United States are being grown by kids. Young gardeners have donated tens of thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables to stop hunger.
Sadly, many people are still hungry. However, Katie Krops and hundreds of child gardeners are planting and harvesting to change that.
