One Saturday afternoon, Amy found her sisters Meg and Jo getting well dressed. They were going to the theater with their friend Laurie. Amy wanted to come too.

"I can't take you, dear, because you aren't invited", but Jo cut in impatiently." You can't go, Amy. Laurie invited only Meg and me".

Amy cried, "You'll be sorry for this, Jo."

While Jo and Meg were at the theater, Amy burned up Jo's book of writings. Jo's loving work of several years was gone in the fire.

That night, Mother asked Jo to forgive (原谅) her sister, but Jo refused.

The next day, Jo went to the river with Laurie to skate on the ice. Amy followed then. Jo saw her coming but turned away. Laurie was carefully skating and didn't see Amy. He warned Jo to stay away from the middle of the river. The ice there was thin. Jo heard him, but Amy did not. Jo realized that Amy probably hadn't heard.

Something turned Jo round. She happened to see Amy throw up her hands and go down. The ice broke. Jo tried to call Laurie, but her voice was gone, and for a second she could only stand there.

Suddenly, "Bring a rail (横杆), Jo. Quick, quick!" Jo fetched some wood and pulled it across the ice. Together they got the child out.

When Mother had put Amy to bed, Jo asked, "Are you sure she is alive?"

"Quite safe, dear." replied her mother.

"Mother, I get angry so quickly. Today. without Laurie, it might have been too late. Oh, Mother, what shall I do?"

"I get angry every day of my life," said Mrs. Marc, "but I've learned to regulate it. I've learned to stop myself saying the angry words, and you must try to do the same, my dear."

When Oxford University Press (出版社) chose "rizz" as its 2023 Word of the Year, many people asked, "Rizz? Is there such a word?" At the same time, many young English speakers laughed out loud "Jeepers, haven't you ever heard of rizz?"

Rizz means the ability to attract a person. Are you good at making friends? Do your classmates often laugh loudly at your jokes? Then you probably have rizz. As in "to rizz up someone", it means to attract someone. The word first appeared on social media as teen slang (俚语) and became popular after the Spider-Man actor Tom Holland said he had "no rizz."  ★ 

 ★  "Jeepers" is another. People use it to express shock. And the word "tea" is no longer just a "drink". It also means "gossip (闲聊)." Similarly, here in China, words like "xianyanbao" have a new meaning. Teens are also saying "dazi" ( pal or friend ) and "qimengle" (What?)．

These changes show that both English and Chinese are alive. A health language, researchers say, should always see new words being created, words being borrowed from other languages and old words taking on new meanings. The changes also show that young people have more influences on society.

When we look back on 2023, one thing stands out: artificial intelligence (AI)．

Computers have become cleverer than ever. Some AI systems (系统) have "rizzed up" many users with their ability to write long articles, create poems and draw pictures. But they can only use language. Can ChatGPT coin a slang word and make it popular? Can it give a word new meanings? Can it change how we humans speak and write?

You should be proud of your ability to play with words. But while you try to create another slang word, remember to be polite. Also, don't use slang in your compositions - it won't "rizz up" your teachers!

①Walking around the city, you will see girls wearing hanfu on the underground or people wearing T-shirt with Chinese characters in the streets. A new trend (潮流) is getting popular in China. It's guochao or China-Chic. Guochao adds traditional Chinese culture into products, and it shows the rise of China's native fashion.

②Guochao got people's attention in 2018. Before that, the market was controlled by foreign companies. There were few Chinese brands. To win the market share, many Chinese brands followed the footsteps of these Western brands. In 2018, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning made changes to the situation. It introduced its Wu Dao collection to the world. The collection not only looked fashionable, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It quickly caught people's attention at home and abroad. And it created amazing sales.

③Later, many Chinese brands, from food, drinks and clothing to mobile phones and cars, started to add Chinese culture into their products. Even the film and music industries made every effort to create Chinese styles. "We want our products to be the ones that young people would like to share", they said.

④These brands got what they wanted. Young people gradually converted their attention from Western culture to guochao. They accepted it with pleasure. What's more, they started to develop interest in traditional Chinese art and literature. Now they wear traditional clothes, practice Chinese calligraphy (书法) and play Chinese musical instruments. Some of them are working together to spread Chinese culture to people around the world.

⑤At the same time, people of different ages start to choose products "made in China". According to a survey, 68% Chinese people prefer Chinese brands. Among them, 62% say they are open to international brands, but local brands remain the first choice.

⑥No matter how guochao develops, there is one thing that won't change—people's confidence in our country's development and culture is growing.

A survey shows that the number of lonely adults is increasing. According to a recent research, loneliness can have harmful effects on health. So if you feel lonely at times, be sure to care about it. Here are some tips for you to avoid being lonely.

Make time to meet people

Maybe it seems that you don't have time to meet new friends, but you need to consider your social life first.  You can even offer to take a neighbor's dog for a walk. The neighbor will surely like to make friends with you.

Build your community online

Without doubt, it's difficult for you to move to meet like-minded people. However, the Internet can easily bring people with the same interests together.  Try some safe meetup websites, which list local groups and events, bringing people with common interests together.

Know more about your friends

In order to find possible friends, try to know more about them. What do they like doing? Join one of their activities. What subject (话题) are they interested in?  In this way, you can know each other much better.

Work as volunteers

Volunteering is good for both body and mind. It gives you the chance to communicate with people. Helping at the local food store or in a charity (慈善) shop will give you a warm feeling and you'll get to know other volunteers. .

Plan ahead

 Rather than just suggesting meeting together, carry it out with an exact date and a careful plan. If you plan to meet more people, making a survey about the plan ahead of time will make the meeting more successful.

The good news is that plants are like nature's little  (superhero). They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO₂) and breathe out oxygen (O₂) which we humans need to live. They can also add moisture to the air if it's too dry, making it  (comfortable)for us to breathe.
