(After lunch, Mike and Lucy are in the classroom. )
Mike: Lucy, where did you go this winter holiday?
Lucy:I went to Harbin.
Mike:
Lucy: Fine. But I had a bad experience on the high-speed train.
Mike:
Lucy: Some people talked too loudly and played videos on speakers(外放).
Mike: Next time, if possible, you'd better choose the quiet carriage(静音车厢).
Lucy: What's that?
Mike: China has introduced quiet carriages on some high-speed railways. In these carriages, passengers must follow some rules to keep a quiet and comfortable environment.
Lucy: Oh, that's great! I will try that carriage next time.
Mike: Yes, you can have a try.
Lucy: You're right. The peaceful environment can make trips more comfortable.
A. What happened?
B. Sounds terrible!
C. How was the trip?
D. The quiet carriage?
E. Where did you go?
F. But I think we still need to keep quiet in a common one.
Mr. White was an English teacher in Long Lake Middle School. His students loved his classes very much. It was Mr. White's 1 class before his students graduated. He decided to give the students a(n) 2 one. He put a large bottle on his desk and some big 3 around it. "There are lots of things that you have 4 in our classes. This shall be the last one. Let's 5 our class with an experiment(实验), "said Mr. White. Then he started to put the stones into the bottle.
When the bottle was full of stones, he 6 and asked, "Is there any 7 for more stones in the bottle?"
"No!"the students answered 8 without thinking.
Mr. White showed some small stones after he heard the answer. He put 9 on the big stones and shook the bottle. Soon the small stones fell into the crevices(缝隙) of big stones in the bottle. "Can we 10 things into the bottle now?"asked Mr. White.
"Can we?"the students said to themselves.
Mr. White 11 some sand and poured the sand on the top of the bottle. Then he 12 the bottle again and the sand fell into the crevices of stones. "Is the bottle full right now?"asked Mr. White. "Maybe not …"The students were not 13 about their answers this time. Mr. White smiled and 14 some water into the bottle.
Life itself seems 15 just like the bottle in Mr. White's experiment, but if you think twice and plan well, then you can add more to it.

Joe Hoagland is an American. When Joe was born, he had a problem with his heart and doctors had to perform an operation(手术) on him. When he was 3, Joe had his second operation. This operation didn't go well and he even couldn't move the left side of his body. The doctors at the hospital didn't think he could get better. Then the family moved to Florida.
Joe liked being in the water and his mother thought swimming could help him. First, they went to swimming pools in hotels, but some hotel guests didn't like them being there. Then one day she went with Joe to a place called Dolphin Plus, where people swam with dolphins. Joe met Fonzie, a3-meter-long, 275 kilogram dolphin(海豚) there and the story really began.
Soon, Joe was eager to see Fonzie every day. He loved playing with him and feeding him. Every time that Joe arrived, Fonzie came to see him right away. Joe's mother told him always to feed Fonzie using his left hand, so Joe used his left side more and more. Slowly, he got better and better. Joe's now over 30 years old. and very well.
Joe's mother saw that Joe's friendship with Fonzie helped him a lot, and she knew it was a good idea for other people, too. So, she and her family worked to open a place called Island Dolphin Care. It's next to Dolphin Plus and many people with health problems come to spend time with the dolphins.
Sadly, Fonzie died in 2004 when Joe was
17. Joe wrote:"Fonzie was a great friend to me; he and Ishared a lot of good times. He always put a smile on my face when I was feeling down. "
① Joe played with Fonzie.
② Joe got better and better.
③ Joe's mother opened Island Dolphin Care.
④ The doctors didn't think Joe could get better.
"Humans can develop certain abilities we aren't born with by practicing animals'movements, "the Chinese Wushu lovers believed in the past——and still do today.
Wuqinxi, also known as"Five-Animal Exercises", is the first complete set of qigong exercises following the movements of animals: bears, tigers, deer(鹿), monkeys, and cranes(鹤). It was developed by one of the greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1, 800 years ago.
Wuqinxi is well-designed(设计) to help blood circulation(循环), and let the energy go smoothly in the body so as to improve the health.
The bear movements are good for the stomach. The tiger movements can reduce(减少) the pain in the back. The deer movements help reduce the fat around the waist(腰). The monkey movements can be good for the heart, and the crane movements can help keep our knees healthy.
For those new learners, the first few exercises might not go well. Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful in your mind, try to move slowly. . . Little by little, you'll feel more and more harmonious(和谐的)with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or a deer, walking in the forest freely.
These exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You can search online for the videos and practice them at any time when you feel like relaxing your body and mind. Because it's fun to practice and good for health, wuqinxi is becoming more and more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many other places of the world.
The other day, I was waiting on a train platform——angrily. The train was late, which meant I would be late to meet a friend at the theater. It didn't help that I had never been to the theater before. "I'll be a little bit late, "I texted with regret.
Like many people, I hate being late. However, I often find myself being late.
People like me are"time optimists(乐观主义者)". "Time optimists"often underestimate(低估)how long something will take. As a result, they are often late for meetings or rush things at the last minute.
They make those around them angry, and they have a lot of stress themselves. How can they fix their ways?
Grace Pacie has written a book about "time optimists". She believes that there is a subconscious(潜意识的) behavior behind our lateness—the fear of being early. "We usually plan to be on time, not ahead of time, "she says. "It took me a long while to understand that if I'm going on a journey that's going to take twenty minutes, I shouldn't leave the house with just twenty minutes to spare. Not all the lights are going to be green. "
For example, if your class starts at 8 p. m. , tell yourself to arrive at 7:30 p. m. It may be a good idea to find something to do near the location beforehand.
A. What's the problem?
B. "Time optimists"usually get into trouble.
C. It's important to leave time for things to go wrong.
D. I had no idea how long it would take to walk from the station.
E. So Grace Pacie suggests"time optimists"create a deadline(截止时间) .
Podareva was born in the hometown of Russia's famous poet Sergei Yesenin. She loved poetry very much. She wrote many poems in both Russian and English. After she came to China to study Chinese in 2013, the world of Chinese poetry opened up before her.
Podareva had colorful experiences in China. She won prizes in many Chinese poetry writing competitions and published(出版) her own Chinese poetry collections. Her most unusual memory was that one of her Chinese poems was turned into a song.
"Some people may praise China in a direct way, but I prefer to express my feelings about the country and describe the friendship between China and Russia through different styles of poems, "Podareva said.
Podareva always wanted to be a cultural ambassador(使者) between the two countries. In 2020, she began to make videos and shared them online. Besides sharing Chinese poems she had written, Podareva also produced videos about cultural differences between China and Russia. Sometimes she made humorous videos to explain the misunderstandings that Chinese people have towards Russians.
Podareva was not only good at writing poems but also good at painting. She didn't think the two art forms were different from each other. "Wang Wei was a famous Chinese poet, and he was also a painter, "she said. In December 2022, Podareva showed 66 of her paintings in Shanghai.
Podareva thought all art was a way for the creators to express their spirit. To make the friendship between China and Russia deeper, she decided to create a website in Russia and introduce China——through her poetry and paintings—to Russian.
