Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. Suddenly, I found black smoke pouring from the back of my car. I stopped and 1 what I was supposed to do. A car pulled up behind me. A 2 came out. They said they would take me to my parents' home. We 3 on the way into the city, and 4 I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I 5 him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterwards, I got a Christmas 6 from them. A note in it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I 7 to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon, I returned to my car and found that the battery(电池)was 8 . Then I 9 that the Friendly Ford dealership, a shop selling cars, was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen 10 beside the door.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?"I asked before 11 my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would not 12 any payment. When I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I 13 a letter back from one of the salesmen. 14 had ever taken the time to write to him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said "Thank you"-two powerful words.
They're 15 to say but mean so much.
Friends, "thank you" are magic words. We feel happy to say "thank you" because we get help. We feel even happier to hear "thank you" because we are able to help others.

As a teenager, school was difficult for me. I had a kind of attention disorder, which means I couldn't direct my attention to what I was doing. So when everyone else in the class was centering their attention on tasks, I could not.
In my first reading class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all finished in 45 minutes. I immediately put up my hand and said, "Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to finish the task. "
She looked down at me through her glasses, saying, "You are not different from your classmates, young man. "With her encouragement, I tried. But I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He Lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn't I the "blind" in my class, being made to learn like the "sighted " students? With thoughts running through my head, I found myself deeply attracted in reading and writing. I completed the task in less than 40 minutes. I realized that I was not different from others. I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problem, why should I ever give up?
I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day with an "A" on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words, "See what you can do when you keep trying?"
① Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it.
② I read the story again in my quiet room.
③ Mrs. Smith gave an "A" on my paper.
④ I had a kind of attention disorder.
Growing up, we've heard a lot of stereotypes(刻板印象)of how sex( 性 别 )influences interests and jobs. For example. most boys do math better than girls, while most girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys' and girls' brains work. But is it true?
According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning(扫描)people's brains. However, researchers only scanned dozens of (几十个) people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need to scan the brains of a few thousand people at least.
In 2023, the UK Biobank scanned the brains of 40, 000 people in the UK. It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another third were larger in women. However, these differences were very small. The differences are not big enough to form a conclusion(结论)from them.
Also, our brains might change in structure (结构)and size according to our life experiences. For example, even if a part of a man's brain, responsible for doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is possibly because he takes jobs that use math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a cause, of different roles in life and society.

Eating pears
