Scientists in Australia studied2 questions. First, how our genes affected our3 ?Second, why we like some tastes more than others? Following the study, scientists understood why some of us prefer coffee4 others like tea more. The reason is simple. People who enjoy bitter tastes are more5 to drink coffee. Scientists noticed that some people were sensitive(敏感的) to the bitter taste of caffeine(咖啡因), so they were more likely to prefer coffee to tea.
Scientists6 the data(数据) from many countries. They also found that genes aren't the only factors affecting people's tastes. Other things like our changing environment, social7 or the effects of taking medicine can also turn us on or off coffee or tea. In 2020, Lily lost her only daughter. She was so grieved that she left her hometown and moved to another city. One day, she met a girl who was living with a host family nearby. They shared the same hobbies and soon became good friends.
A few years later, the girl changed to different host families, and had a hard time. So she looked for help from Lily. Lily quickly welcomed the girl into her home and held a party for her. After the welcome party, Lily unpacked the girl's backpack. It was full of rubbish with only a few clothes. Lily and her husband were touched, so they decided to take the girl for shopping.
The girl was so glad that she got new "parents". That made Lily think about other poor kids who were not as lucky as the girl. She wanted to give them a hand, too. Lily then came up with the idea of opening a shop offering free clothes. She made her plan and finally carried out the idea. The shop is called Blossom, because every child is like flowers. We need to take good care of them. The shop gives out free clothes to anyone in need. At Blossom, families can pickup three full sets of clothes and shoes for free.
Lily hopes all that she has done will bring children more happiness and love. Lily says if the shop is successful, she will think about opening an education center to help the children study.
It's time to put down your phone.
Researchers from a university in California have found that eye damage caused by too much screen time can harm other important organs(器官) and even shorten your life. Professor Pankaj Kapahi and Brian Hodge published their findings. It showed that the real situation is worse than we thought.
"Our study shows that this is a big problem: eye damage may actually lead to problems in other organs, " Kapahi said. He and Hodge studied the patterns of fruit flies and found that overexposure (过度接触) to light in the eyes can cause or worsen chronic disease(慢性病). Further research found that fruit flies that were completely in darkness lived longer than those that were not.
Too much time spent in front of a screen can harm your health. "To our surprise, wefound that the eye itself,at least in the fruit fly, can directly change life, ""Hodge said. "Looking at computer and phone screens will surely do harm to us. On top of these, being exposed to light pollution late into the night is especially bad for us, " Kapahi explained. " It messes up eye protection, damaging the rest of the body and the brain. "
These findings are very worrying because screen time has increased fast for many kids because of COVID-19. Parents reported that although they prevented their kids from playing video games, children's screen time still increased from 0. 75 hours to 6. 5 hours a day due to online classes.
"We always think of the eye as something that serves us. We don't think of it as something that needs to be protected, " Kapahi reminded us.
