One day, two teenagers met on the way to college. One had some records under his arm. They began talking about music. Later, at a club, a guitarist asked them to join his band. They found a place to practise, and started playing and attracting fans. Then they made an album(专辑). In five years, they became very famous.
This is the story of the British rock band-the Rolling Stones, but it's also the story of many other bands. Music-making has always been a popular activity in the UK. Musical cities
Groups are proud of where they come from. Cities often have a special sound or style. Liverpool in the 1960s had the Cavern Club, where many groups played. The famous band Beatles finished their first show in this club. Manchester created its own place in the 1980s at the Hacienda Club.
Innovation(创新)
Several musical styles started in the UK. Punk(朋克摇滚乐) gave people the idea that anyone could start a band-musical ability wasn't important.
Places to play, places to listen
There are many places for live music shows in the UK.
Brixton Academy is an old-style concert hall. King Tut's in Glasgow only has room for 300 people. But there are also many big places with modern seating and sound effects.
Music festivals
In summer, the best places for live music are festivals. Glastonbury Festival is one of the oldest music festivals and it started in 1970. It attracts big stars for five days every June. There are plenty of free events too, like the Strawberry Fair in Cambridge, which welcomes families.
Eric Whitacre is regarded as one of the famous musicians. His wonderful and special skills of creating music quickly draw people's attention. He is excited about using choral(合唱的) music to join people together from all over the world.
As a child, Eric Whitacre lived in a small town with many farms. He had great interest in music since childhood. He didn't know how to read music, but he often played different kinds of instruments. Years later, Eric went to the college which used to be his ideal school. There he met the leader of the college's choir (合唱团). At first, Eric didn't want to join the choir, but finally he did because the leader promised to teach him music.
When Eric first sang with the choir, it was a big surprise. The beautiful and interesting choral music shocked him and then he decided to write musical pieces. At the age of 21, Eric achieved his first work and had many fans. Later he became an excellent musician, and his works were very modern.
Eric Whitacre's choir is very unusual because it's completely virtual(虚拟的). The Internet makes this possible. The members of the choir don't know each other. They are in different ages, from different countries, and have different jobs. But they are united by their love of singing and their hope of being part of a worldwide community that makes beautiful music.
Guqin is an about 1, 000-year-old instrument from the Tang dynasty. At first, guqin' s name is "qin". As many western instruments came into China, people added the "gu", meaning "the ancient". The history of guqin started from 3, 000 years ago in the Zhou dynasty. At first it had five strings(弦), with two added later by the emperor of the Zhou dynasty.
In ancient times, guqin was considered as an important part of Chinese high culture. It was a matter that only noblemen(贵族) would be able to play it. It is no doubt the most important shown-up subject matter in Chinese culture.
Many stories and idioms(成语)came from Chinese guqin music. For example, the idiom "high mountains and flowing water", which is used to describe a pair of friends, is about the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi. Their friendship was set up by the same understanding of guqin music.
Guqin has three types of sounds. They are Sanyin, Fanyin and Anyin. All these sounds are believed to have one thing in common:giving people a sense of peace. If you listen to them, you will be call and quiet.
The Chinese believe that guqin has included the sounds of the universe(宇宙). When the Voyager 2 was launched into space, a record was taken. It included a piece of guqin music Flowing Streams played by a Chinese guqin master.
When I was young, I thought musicians were really cool. So I have started learning to play musical instruments I was a kid.
My first music lesson was playing the keyboard(键盘式电子乐器)with my sister. We started from simplest thing--using five fingers to touch the keys. Although I practiced a lot, I couldn' t play it well. These black and white keys seemed really hard for me to play.
At first, I was filled with energy and I was (suppose) to practice every day. However, afte r two months' classes, I gradually(逐渐地)felt bored that. Actually, I liked the keyboard because it could make all kinds of sounds. But playing for a long time made me feel (pain).
My dream finally disappeared.
My sister was different. She spent all her free time practicing and she (master) every skill well. Finally, her dream came true. She could play so many beautiful ( piece) of music. I remembered in a competition, everyone clapped(鼓掌) for her because of her perfect (perform).
There is nothing wrong with (stick) to your interest. But when you want to give up, you' d better ask (you) whether you really like it or not. Then you can make a right decision and try not to regret.
