At first, White thought he had hooked a stingray. But as he reeled (绕线) it in, he realized it was a sevengill shark, about 6 feet long. Not uncommon but still dangerous He brought it close and carefully unhooked it, expecting it to swim away. It didn't. The shark bit his ankle.

"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," says White. He yelled for help, hoping the fishermen down the beach could hear. But they didn't seem to know what was going on. Fortunately, Darby did. He jumped out of the car and ran toward the water. He ran right up to the shark and sank his teeth into its gills (鱼鳃).

"That just made the shark bite down harder," White says. Darby backed off, then regrouped and attacked the shark's tail. The shark released its grip (紧抓), and White managed to push it into shallow water, where it swam off. "The whole thing took less than a minute," White says, "but it left plenty of damage." White was able to stop the bleeding and get to a hospital, where he learned that the wound was very severe.

That would've been the end of it, had Darby's story not gone viral. White was contacted by NBC News and CNN. That's when the countless cash offers started to come in. But the big dog was not for sale.

Unfortunately, many Shangbai locals don't even know about shikumen houses, and they are disappearing due to the development of the city. To make a difference, a group of students from Shanghai International Studies University has established a studio called "Meeting Shikumen". "We probably can't stop them from disappearing," said Mei Zi, 18, the leader of the group. "But we want to let more people know that shikumen houses exist."

Starting in 2022, the students opened accounts on WeChat and Instagram to share information about shikumen houses, such as the significance of their architectural design and how they reflect Shanghai culture. To draw more young people's attention to shikumen houses, they also created original IP figures called "Kuku" and "Tiantian". The students even created a series of WeChat stickers of Kuku and Tiantian, which now have been used by more than 10,000 people.

"This project has become a tradition of our university and will be carried on by students," Mei said. "In the future, we want to interact with international students in Shanghai, by taking them on theme tours of shikumen houses, to share shikumen with people from various cultures."

    1. (1) What materials are commonly used in the construction of shikumen houses?

    2. (2) What is the goal of the "Meeting Shikumen" studio?
A . To prevent shikumen houses from disappearing. B . To raise public awareness of shikumen houses. C . To promote the architectural design of shikumen houses. D . To document historical events related to shikumen houses.
    3. (3) What have the students done to make more young people interested in shikumen houses?
A . Created two original IP figures. B . Organised theme tours of shikumen houses. C . Developed an app to introduce shikumen architecture. D . Produced a documentary on the history of shikumen houses.
    4. (4) What is the students' future plan for the "Meeting Shikumen" studio?

"When I think of England, I think of the queen taking her dogs for walk in the countryside," says Carsten Haferkamp, a dog-owning German working in London. Data from Tractive, a firm that provides GPS tracking for pets, show that Britons walk their dogs more than their European neighbors do.

The British love for dog-walking may have more to do with the walking than the dogs. Britons are big walkers –they came fifth in the world in a study in 2017, the highest in Europe. Dogs provide walkers with company and a purpose, so it may be that walking encourages dog-ownership.

But Julien Dugnoille, an expert at Exeter University, suspects dog-walking has a deeper significance. Dogs, he suggests, are a useful aid to a socially awkward nation. "Britons tend to have a chat with strangers and exchange a few jokes and comments about the weather without putting themselves in danger."

A tradition among the British nobles of owning and training dogs also leads Dr Dugnoille to assume that dog-walking is a way to keep ancient honor. "When people in the park say Max is very well-behaved," says Dr Dugnoille, "that is a way to show their authority in the art of dog training compared to those dog owners who are not in control of their own dog."

But it's not just about showing off, in his view. He believes walking with one's best friend creates a time and space where dogs and humans meet as species and connect as individuals.

Still, Britons should not congratulate themselves too much on their behavior towards their dog companions. According to Dr Carri Westgarth of Liverpool University, "People say that a dog needs a walk every day, but they will find reasons why their dog doesn't need a walk. They'll say: he's got company indoors, he's nervous or he doesn't like the rain."

    1. (1) The queen is mentioned in paragraph 1 to show _______.
A . the queen's love for dogs B . a foreigner's impression of England C . the British devotion to walking dogs D . the importance of dog-walking for Europeans
    2. (2) What does Dr Dugnoille most probably agree with?
A . Britons see dogs as protectors from danger. B . Dog-walking is related to the British traditional culture. C . Britons prefer to walk rather than walk the dog. D . Dog-walking is a close link between the British and nature.
    3. (3) Dr Westgarth's comment on the British dog-walking suggests that_______.
A . Britons are proud of dog-walking B . dogs are a good companion for Britons C . he is doubtful of the British love for dogs D . weather is a popular topic among Britons
    4. (4) What would be the best title for the text?
A . Love Your Dog, Walk Your Dog B . How Do Britons Walk Their Dogs? C . Opinions on Dog-Walking in Britain D . Why Do Britons Love to Walk Dogs?

    How to Set Goals

Whether you have small dreams or high expectations, setting goals allows you to plan how you want to move through life.

Find out your life goals. Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life. What do you want to achieve today, in a year, and in your lifetime? The answers to this question can be as general as "I want to be happy" or "I want to help people".

Write out your goals. Be detailed be clear, and include your steps.  Keep your list in a place where you can get informed frequently. This will help keep you motivated.

You may find yourself set in your ways concerning broad life goals, but take the time to reevaluate your smaller goals. Are you accomplishing them according to your timeline? Are they still necessary to keep you on track towards your larger life goals? Allow yourself the flexibility (灵活性) to make some small changes to your goals.

    A. Adjust your goals.

    B. Track and measure your progress.

    C. Having a plan will help push you ahead.

    D. Writing them down tends to make them a little more real.

    E. Here are some important ideas that you may find helpful.

    F. Consider what you hope to achieve in 10, 15, or 20 years.

    G. Remember that you may need to break large goals into smaller goals.
