It's hard to turn down a tasty banana. They taste good and you don't have to wash them before eating them. 1 , British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.
One reason for this is climate(气候)2 . Scientists at the University of Exeter collected data(数据) from 27 countries that 3 86 percent of the world's bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing 4 in 21 of these countries. In the past 6 years, the average yield(平均产量) 5 1.37 tons of bananas per hectare(公顷).
However, if temperatures keep rising, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, 6 India, the world's biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050, the fruit may 7 .
Shouldn't bananas grow more easily if it's 8 outside? In fact, the 9 temperature range(范围) for growing bananas is between 24℃ and 32℃. They will stop 10 if the temperatures get too high.
Diseases are 11 danger to bananas. Unlike other plants, the bananas we grow come from shoot cuttings(茎段) rather than seeds(种子). This means that all banana plants have the same genotype(基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it 12 kill them all.
One disease that hurts bananas 13 is called Panama. Caused by fungus(真菌) in the soil, it spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. If one banana plantation 14 from the disease, it will take 30 years 15 it is able to grow bananas again. Scientists haven' t found a cure for this disease yet.

Usually when you hear about a new product idea, it's been or will be something great to come to the market. But what the failed inventions?
Dr. Samuel West, a psychologist(心理学家) from Sweden, wondered the same thing. "I just got of reading and hearing so many successful stories, they are all alike(相似的 )." Samuel West said. He searched for failed inventions around the world, and the Museum of Failure in 2017.
Since then, the museum has started world tours. More than 100 failed products , Coca-Cola's coffee flavored soda(咖啡味苏打水), Apple's Newton Message Pad, a bottle of green ketchup(番茄音) and a pen designed for women, are on display.
With these failed inventions, Samuel West tries an attractive learning experience for visitors. He doesn't want to shame the inventors, to let visitors know that it's okay to share failure. It's the failure that can help us learn from and do better.
This January, the museum had a traveling show in Shanghai, China. This was its show in Asia. To enter China, the show was given a(n) name in Chinese, Cheng Gong Zhi Mu. As the old saying goes, "Failure is the mother of success." The show lasted two months and was a huge .

Frances Wood comes from London, UK. She loves words, books and language. She used to work at the British Library to restore(修复) important Chinese old books.
Frances says, "For a very long time, for 30 years or so, I was head of the Chinese collections in the British Library." She spent her working life with Chinese books. In her free time, she wrote books about China and introduced Chinese culture to people in the UK and other countries in Europe.
Frances comes from a family of linguists(语言学家). Her mother taught French. Her father spoke French well and taught in France for some time, and he was in charge of(负责) French in the British Museum Library. The family went to France every year. Frances then learned both French and Spanish. They are easy to learn for an English speaker.
But when it comes to a life-long career(生涯), Frances says she didn't want to do French or Spanish. She thought she'd like to learn a language which is different and as difficult as possible. She looked at Chinese, Japanese and Arabic and chose Chinese. Frances learns something new every day-a new character(字), a new phrase, etc. "I'm very glad that I chose Chinese. Chinese is the most beautiful language," Frances says and smiles.
Learning Chinese has been enjoyable for Frances. From the moment she began, she has loved it. She will keep learning, studying and loving it for the rest of her life.

Luoyang Water Banquet, also called Luoyang Shuixi, is a traditional Chinese food. Its story can date back over 1,000 years.
①____
Luoyang is a city surrounded(围绕) by mountains with little rain. In ancient times during the cold weather, people hardly got any fruit to eat, so they invented all kinds of soups to fight against the cold and dryness.
②____
There are two reasons for the name Water Banquet. One is that all the dishes served are soupy. The other reason lies in the serving order. The dishes are served continuously one after another, like running water.
③____
There are in total 24 dishes in the banquet:8 cold dishes, 4 big dishes, 8 smaller dishes, and 4 end dishes. First,8 cold dishes, which include 4 vegetable dishes and 4 meat dishes, are served as accompaniments to drinks(下酒菜). Then the 4 big dishes and 8 smaller dishes are served. These 12 dishes are divided into 4 groups, and each group includes 3 dishes. There is a big dish in each group, followed by two smaller dishes as side dishes. At last, four end dishes are served. The last end dish is the Farewell Soup(送客汤) meaning all dishes have been served. The dishes are always served exactly in this order.
The speciality of Luoyang Water Banquet makes it popular. There are both meat and vegetables, cold and warm dishes. There are sour soups and hot soups, catering to(迎合) the tastes of people from both the north and south of China.
If you have a chance to visit Luoyang, don't miss the Water Banquet.
All of us may have experienced embarrassing moments. It could have been the time when you pronounced a simple word wrong in class, wore your T-shirt backwards, talked about someone else without realizing they were right behind you, or secretly tried to take a picture of someone while the flash was on.
Though these embarrassing moments don't harm us a lot, they come back from time to time and make us feel upset. Even if these moments may have faded(消失) after some time, we would always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment. In fact, these feelings may last for years. When these kinds of feelings return, they are known as a "cringe attack(羞愧综合征)".
I personally get a quite uncomfortable feeling when I think back on a party my parents took me to when I was younger. I ate a bowl of strawberries by myself. My parents shouted at me in front of everyone for being so selfish. From then on every time I put a strawberry into my mouth, my brain just throws that embarrassing scene back.
Why do these "cringe attacks" still pop up in our daily lives even though the actual events happened weeks, months, or even years ago? According to researchers, our brains give special attention to feelings that can be easily noticed. The stronger the feeling is, the stronger the memory will be. If you have a highly embarrassing or highly emotional(情绪激动的) moment, no matter what it is, your brain will try to catch it.
So how can we deal with this? Well, we can start by trying to be more objective(客观的) about our past selves. Consider that you are not alone in your embarrassment-everyone fails or makes silly, embarrassing mistakes. Instead of just trying to forget what we did, we should try to accept who we were at that moment and think about how we can change for the better.
There are so many expressions in American English that sound pleasant but are not. When someone says they have to "face the music", it does not mean they are going to a concert. "Facing the music" means to accept and deal with the punishment of an action.
For example. "I can't face another night of camping! It's cold and rainy." Or "In life, you must face your fears." Face used in this way is very common.
But now. let's go back to facing the music. Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says. "Thanks so much for watching my car while I'm away. But please. do not drive it. It is an extremely(极其) fast car.". You want to show off to some friends. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. Bang!
When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and "face the music". It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is. you must face it.
To "take your medicine" means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, "You made your bed. Now lie in it." they mean you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results!
A.But you do not listen. B."Face the music" is a good example. C.Many slangs appeared in American English. D.The "music" here is the result of your actions. E.Americans often use the word "face" in this way. F.You may put up your hands to express your advice. G.There are other same expressions as "face the music". |
