I spent most of my last summer holiday in California on the beach. However, one day I got the chance to try something different—to go on a day trip to the Raskin Ranch (牧场) just north of Los Angeles.
The Raskin Ranch has been home for six generations(代) of the Raskin family. It has been a family business since 1895, and the family makes money from both the animals and the guest house.
I fell in love with the place as soon as I arrived. The people working there walk around in jeans and cowboy hats — not as part of a tourist show, but because that' s the most practical (适用的) way to dress for the work they do.
The first thing I did when I got there was eat lunch. You won't be surprised to hear that there was one thing on the menu: steak(牛排). To be honest, every steak I've eaten since then has been a bit disappointing.
You'd think an afternoon and evening on a ranch wouldn't offer much, but the short visit was filled with activities. The first thing after lunch was a riding tour of the ranch. The horses are well trained and perfect for beginners. Later, I learned how to tie and throw a lasso(套索) and how to build a campfire. I can't say I was very good at either of those things, but it was fun giving it a try!
By the end of the day, I was tired but happy. If I get the chance to go to Los Angeles again, I'm going to pay a visit to the Raskin Ranch. It is better than any beach!

It takes a chicken between 24 and 26 hours to lay one egg. Different chickens lay eggs of different colors. The eggs may be white, brown, green and even blue. You can predict what color eggs a chicken may lay according to the color of its earlobes(耳垂).
Now that you have learned about some facts, let' s dig up some wrong ideas. First, brown eggs are healthier than white eggs. The truth is, white eggs are as healthy. Second, eating eggs is bad for your heart because they have cholesterol(胆固醇). But a long-running study found that eating eggs doesn't cause heart problems. Third, an egg that floats(漂浮) in water is bad. In fact, it just means that the egg is old. But if it smells bad or has strange colors, it might be bad.
Now you know the truth about eggs! So, go on and enjoy an egg or two today!
A man named Randy in Canada liked to hunt for trees. He looked for big trees and old trees in Canada. He made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. Actually he wanted people to take care of them.
Ancient trees are today rare (稀少的) everywhere in the world. On Vancouver Island in Canada, there are so many big trees. The biggest trees are about 800 years old. They are the survivors of a forest fire. The fire brought damage to the area about 350 years ago. Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger—a person whose job is to cut down trees. The loggers wanted to cut down Canada's tallest tree and all the trees around it.
Randy made a path (小路) in the forest in order that people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and beautiful that even more and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada's tallest tree is still there.
There may still be a bigger tree out there. Maybe you will find it. But there are only a few old forests left in Canada. Many are still at risk of being cut down.
