In Miss Lee's class, the students are asked to discuss the topic "Do you do housework at home?" in groups. Here's what the students of Group One say.
Tommy:No, I have no time. Schoolwork almost takes all of my time! How can I spend such precious (宝贵的) time doing housework? Helen: I help my mother with our housework, but she must pay me. I don't enjoy doing that. It doesn't do any good to me in any way. Linda: Doing some housework not only helps my parents but also helps myself. It is a chance for me to take a break from my schoolwork and to learn some skills for my future. Also, it's a chance to show my love and care for my parents. Emily: To tell you the truth, I hardly ever do housework at home. My parents say a nice girl should learn to do housework if she wants to be a good wife(妻子) in the future, but I don't think so. Why can't I hire(雇佣)a housekeeper then? |
Once upon a time, there lived a great king. One day, he went out of his palace alone. The king had his reasons. His advisors always said something good to make him happy. This time, he wanted to talk with his people to get information directly(直接地)from them.
When it was getting dark, the king found that he lost his way. He looked around but couldn't see any people. Then he went to the top of a hill. Luckily, he saw a small house. He walked over there.
As the king got closer, he noticed an old woman cleaning up outside the house. She didn't know he was a king. She welcomed him by providing him with a plate of hot rice.
The king was very hungry, so he used his hands to get the hot food to eat. The hot food burnt his hand, so he dropped some rice on the floor.
"Oh you seem very impatient like the king," the old woman said.
The king asked, "Why do you think the king is impatient?"
"The king had a big dream of taking over all his enemy's (敌人)forts(城堡). He took over the larger forts but he didn't pay attention(注意) to the smaller ones."
"But wasn't it a good thing?" the king asked.
The woman said, "You got hurt because of your impatience. Similarly, the king's impatience caused many deaths. Instead, if the king first had taken over the smaller forts to make his army larger and stronger, it would be easier for him to take over the larger ones.
Hearing this, the king knew about his mistakes and learned the importance of patience.
① He went out of the palace.
② He had a plate of rice.
③ He found a small house.

In many people's eyes, plants are quiet. They can't talk. They can't walk. And they can't think like us.
Or can they? A new TV show gives us a new look at plants. Shown on Jan. 10 on Bilibili, it tells the secret lives of plants, and the wonderful and unbelievable ways that plants work.
▲ . In the rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a "battlefield"(战场). Only two percent of the sunlight gets through it. Some plants spread(蔓延)their big leaves to reach light. But other plants may catch them up and get a lift. Finally, they are both overtaken(超过)by a fast-growing tree. Similarly, some trees may give out something to protect themselves.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, if a tree finds water, it will share it with others. Studies also show that plants use fungus(真菌)in the soil as a way to "talk" to each other. It's kind of like how Wi-Fi works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease(疾病), it can tell nearby plants about it.
The TV show not only makes us amazed at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. "Plants are the needs of all life, including ourselves. We depend upon them for every mouth of food that we eat and every lungful of air that we breathe," said David, the director of the show. It's time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.
Disasters(灾难) can happen when people fly a drone(无人驾驶飞机) without knowing how to really control it. A drone flying into an airspace could cause a great disaster if it hit a jet plane. Some have become tangled(缠结) in power lines, costing thousands of dollars to get them down. If people try to remove the drone themselves, they could be killed by electricity(电). A falling drone can do great damage(毁坏)to buildings and people.
One terrible accident happened when an operator lost control of a drone. The drone pilot was flying it by his home when its rotors(螺旋桨) hit a tree. The drone went out of control, falling into a neighbor's yard where a young child was playing. Sadly, this little boy lost his sight in one eye.
While drones can be harmful(有害的), they can also be very helpful. At a sports event, drones can be used to give people a view from above or help coaches see how their players are doing. They are also becoming a useful tool for firefighters, helping them notice wildfires. Drones can closely watch populations of animals in the wild, especially endangered ones. In some very far-away places in the world, drones are the fastest way to take medicine to people who need it.
After the Nepal earthquake, the sky was filled with drones. They were fitted with cameras and their role was to fly over roads blocked by landslides to find people who are hurt or record any damage to bridges or buildings. The photos provided important information.
Some people think drones should be only used by governments(政府) to help when needed. Others think that as long as the rules are followed, there should be little risk to people. Drone makers say drones are exciting new technology and the future will be dominated(主导)by them.
a. To pay attention to the populations of wild animals.
b. To send information to people in far-away places.
c. To look for people trapped in the earthquake.
d. To fly into the air to notice the jet plane.
e. To help coaches see their players from above.
Recently, many people around the world have tried ChatGPT(人工智能聊天机器人程序).
•
ChatGPT is a conversational AI language model. You can chat with ChatGPT by asking it questions and it will quickly answer them in human-like natural language based on its training.
•
The model was trained on many different Internet texts, allowing it to have knowledge(知识)on a wide range of topics, including history, science, sports, and much more.
•
According to Andreas Schleicher, an official from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, (OECD), the chatbot(聊天机器人) will become a very powerful tool in the development of education. As a device, ChatGPT is going to make learning much more interesting and powerful.
•
However, New York City's Department of Education announced a ban (禁令) on the wildly popular chatbot ChatGPT - which may help more student cheat (作弊) - from its schools' devices and networks.
• What do professors and students think of ChatGPT?
A latest survey among educators and students shows as following:
72% of college professors are worried about its impact on cheating; Over a third (34%) of all educators believe that ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities; 66% support students to use it; Over 89% of students have used ChatGPT to help with a homework assignment; 53% had it to write an essay(论文).
A. What problems may ChatGPT cause? B. Why can ChatGPT answer different questions? C. What is ChatGPT? D. Who developed ChatGPT? E. What may it bring to education? |
Do you think students should use ChatGPT for learning? Why or why not?

Dear Li Ping,
I'm not happy these days. I hurt my leg badly while playing basketball last week. And I will have to stay at home for around a month. Because of this, my parents don't allow me to play basketball later. So I argue with them about it. Also, I feel worried about the lessons that will be missing. What should I do?
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Wang Fang
