A group of boys gathered around a tree. "What a tall tree!" they said to each other, "It would be exciting to climb the top!"

The group of boys then decided to play a game to see who would climb to the top of the tree first. Their mothers were sitting not far away, looking on at their children as they played.

One of the climbers was an 8-year-old boy named David. He was the shortest child in the group. Nobody thought he would win the competition.

Then the game started. All of the boys tried their best to climb as high as they could. Although they all made it halfway up the tree before David did, he reached the top of the tree fastest in the end.

His mother was proud to see this. She asked him, "David, how did you reach the top of the tree so quickly?"

"It was easy, " David said. " the other children kept looking down as they climbed. When they realized how high they were, they got scared and were afraid of falling down. I, however, looked only up. When I saw how close I was, I kept going higher and higher until reached the top. "

It is true in life that if we just keep going forward without looking back, we are more likely to achieve our dreams.

From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors?

According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments (色素). These pigments appear in different amounts(量), depending on the fruit's environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain color.

To find out how environment affects(影响) fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black.

They found that red fruit mostly grows in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warm places. These fruit grows a lot in just one area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator (赤道), the darker its color will be.

Animals have also played an important role in the evolution (进化) of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. In order to attract(吸引) animals, some fruit develop colors that are easy for animals to see.

However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colors that are easy for animals to see. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. So there is more red fruit in areas where birds live. A kind of monkey in Madagascar are red-green color-blind. Many yellow fruit can be found around them as they can easily see this color.

    1. (1) You are more likely to find blue and purple fruit in ____ places.
      A . cooler B . warmer C . higher D . lower
    2. (2) Which of the following is TRUE?
A . Dark fruit likes to grow close to the equator. B . Green fruit likes to grow in cool places. C . Humans can see red more easily than birds. D . Birds are color-blind and can see no colors.
    3. (3) Some fruits develop certain colors to ____.
A . scare animals away B . take in more sunlight C . attract animals to eat them D . protect themselves
    4. (4) Which of the following affect the evolution of fruit colors?

      a. environment                                                b. pigment

      c. animals                                                        d. humans' visual abilities

  • 13.  阅读理解

① We spend most of our time with friends who we like. Well, who would stay with a person one doesn't like? What kind of people are welcomed by others, then?

② There are many attractive(有吸引力的)people around you. By being with them just once, you start to like them. If you wonder why they attract people and want to be a person like them, you should learn how to develop the traits that they have.

③ Firstly, everybody wants to be happy, and nobody wants to spend their time with a sad person. Well, you see, there is what you call mood linkage. If you are with a jolly (愉快的) person, you are more probably to be happy. When people choose to spend time with a person, they are more likely to choose those who are cheerful. So if you are a happy person, many people will want to spend their time with you.

④ Next, everybody needs someone to give encouragement to them, because sometimes in our lives we experience failure, sadness, problems and other bad things. So if you always choose to cheer others up with encouraging words or actions, they will be willing to spend time with you.

⑤ Lastly, you are not a friend if you don't lend a hand to your friends when they need help. You should always be helpful to them, no matter what it costs, because when you need help, they will be there for you, too.

⑥ It feels good if people want to be your friends because of your character. So if you want to attract friends, I suggest you learn to develop these traits.

    1. (1) The writer mentions all the following that attracts others, EXCEPT(除了) ____.
      A . being a happy person B . being polite C . being encouraging D . being helpful
    2. (2) Which of the following shows the right structure of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1, …)
      A . B . C . D .
    3. (3) The underlined word "traits" in Paragraph 2 probably means "____".
      A . personalities B . looks C . hobbies D . habits
    4. (4) The best title for the passage is ____.
A . HowTo Be An Attractive Person B . How To IntroduceThe Traits Of Oneself C . HowTo Live A Happy Life D . How To FindA Real Friend
    5. (5) What kind of person is attractive to you? (15词之内, 用完整句子回答)

What inspires (激发) you to work hard? Having your own goals is important. Good sleep also helps a lot.

Mike Robinson, an engineer from Canada, owns his own small company. One day, his wife suggested picking out some plants and putting them on his workers' desks. Robinson doubted (怀疑) the idea at first. What good would plants do? He thought they might even be distracting (让人分心的).  First, Robinson bought 20 plants for his workers. He asked each worker to make a small sign that said "My name is. . . " and write their own name on the sign.

To his surprise, Robinson found that his workers were working much harder and getting along much better than before. It could be because his workers formed "friendships" with their plants. They would take good care of them, and in turn, take more care with their work.  What about you? Does your classroom have any plants? If not, you might want to ask your teacher about this. You and your classmates could take turns taking care of some plants in your classroom.

    A. People can benefit (受益) a lot from plants.

    B. But as it turns out, having a plant on your desk can improve your work as well.

    C. It could be a nice way to make your classroom more lively and get to know your classmates even better.

    D. Plants can also help to create a relaxing environment.

    E. But he decided to try out the idea.

    F. Then, they put the sign on the plant they chose and took it back to their desk.
