Dear Mike,
I like listening to music when I'm doing my homework. But my parents think this isn't a good idea because I won't work well while I'm listening to music. I think they are right, but I also want to listen to music. What should I do?
Ella
Dear Ella,
I like listening to music while I work as well. In fact, I'm listening to music right now while I'm writing to you! I find that listening to music can help me focus (专注) more on what I'm working on.
However, this is not true for everyone. Maybe your parents are right. I find that my efficiency depends on (取决于) what kind of music I'm listening to.
Some research shows that some kinds of music can help work better. Try to find music that doesn't have any lyrics (歌词),or that has the sounds of nature. Don't play your music too loudly. And don't listen to songs that you strongly like or dislike. Tell your parents why you like listening to music while you work-maybe they will understand.
Mike
Spring is one of the four seasons in a year, which lasts from March to May in the northern hemisphere (北半球) and from September to November in the southern hemisphere (南半球). It is the time of year when the days start to get longer, the weather becomes warmer, and the world around us starts to come back to life.
What happens (发生) to the animals?
Animals such as grass snakes, lizards and frogs come out of hibernation on the first warm spring days. You might see frogspawn, which looks like jelly.
Hibernation: A time when animals rest and save their energy for the warmer months. Migrant birds: birds that go to a warmer country for the winter. |
Some animals move about a lot more in spring, such as squirrels. You can see squirrels moving about, looking for food and climbing trees.
There are also lots of migrant birds that come back to the UK in the spring. You can see swifts, cuckoos and nightingales.
What happens to the plants and the insects?
Nature is very busy in spring and there are lots of changes. You can see the trees and bushes sprout (发芽) new leaves again in spring and many plants blossom (开花) because the air and soil are warmer and there are more daylight hours.
We can see many more insects in spring, including butterflies and bees, which like the flowers.
①This week is Anti-bullying (反欺凌) Week in the UK from Monday 13th to Friday 17th November. This year's theme(主题) is "Make A Noise About Bullying".
②What's bullying, exactly? A bully is more than just a mean (刻薄的) kid. A bully likes to give you a hard time for no reason. A bully calls your mean names, takes your things and even hits you. Or maybe it's a girl who calls you "ugly" and makes up mean stories about you online (网上). Bullying can happen at school, in your neighborhood or even online.
③Being bullied is terrible and, if it happens to you, you are not alone. Surveys show one-fourth of US middle school students have experienced bullying. Bullying can make you feel terrible over and over again for a long time. Maybe you are scared to go to school, or can't eat or sleep.
④What can you do? First of all, remember to be proud of who you are. Also, keep in mind that it's not your fault (错误) if you are being bullied and it's the bully who has the problem. If you can, ignore (忽视) the bully. Hopefully they will get bored and stop. If these things don't work, tell your favorite teacher and your parents about the bullying. And, of course, never be a bully. If you don't like someone, don't bully him or her and the world will be a much happier place.
⑤This Anti-Bullying Week lets us discuss what bullying means to us, how we feel about it and what we can do to stop it. Together, we can make a difference.

My name is John. There are many rules in my family. On school, I have to get up at 6:00 in the morning, and , I take a bus to school. I must finish my homework after school. I watch TV or play computer games on school nights. On weekends, I must clean my room and have a good sleep. The rules are but I think they can help me a lot.
How do you go to school or work? As everyone knows, there(be) different means of transportation (交通工具) in the world, bikes, buses, ships, trains and others.
If you are in big (city), like Shanghai or Beijing, maybe you get to school by subway, or you have to walk to school if you live in Mountain village. Here I am just (try) to say something about bikes.
Twenty years ago, bikes were kind expensive (昂贵的) in most villages. Every family just had one two bikes. Children got to school by bike; women rode bikes to go shopping. Then motorcycles began to become popular. People no longer (不再) rode bikes because motorcycles ran much faster. now, bikes are highly suggested (高度推荐) in some countries. They think buses, cars and motorcycles are bad for the air but bikes are (friendly) to the environment (环境). So to live a green life, (ride) a bike is a good way.
Dear Li Hua, How's it going? I'm so excited that I am going to study in your school next month. Can you tell me about your school life? For example, how do you usually go to school? When do classes begin? What's your favorite subject? One more thing, I want to know about your school rules. I think it is important for me to know about them. Best wishes! Write to me soon. Yours, John |
