Forgiveness (宽恕) won't change the past, but it can make a difference to the future. In my teaching life I have 1 this and will never forget one thing happened in my class.
As the students were doing the task, I heard her' laughter in my class. Note-taking couldn't be that 2 .
So I walked over to the student and asked for her 3 Unexpectedly, she refused to give it to me. I just 4 .
Finally, the girl handed it over, she 5 her voice, "Hmm. . . okay, but I didn't draw it.
It was a hand-drawn picture of me, 6 blackened and the words"I'm stupid" coming out of my mouth.
I felt really angry and embarrassed, but I tried to keep 7 I wondered who had drawn the picture. I would do something to 8 him a lesson.
9 , I was able to control myself then.
I showed the class the picture. All the students were in silence as I told them 10 this hurt me. I told them there must be a 11 behind, and now I would give them a chance to write down anything they 12 to tell me.
Later, I read all the notes. Many of them said something like"I've got nothing against you. Or "I'm sorry you were hurt. "But only one note said: "We are always 13 because you are so strict, and you get mad too easily... "
I suddenly realized that over the course of this year, I had never 14 my students.
I had some apology to do. But the next day in the classroom, a girl handed me a card. On it, she expressed her regret for the ugly 15 .
I kept the card till now. And this was a lesson for both the kids and me.
Power shortage If you visited Chengdu this summer, you might have seen a very "dark"city: no more neon lights (霓虹灯) in the streets; people sitting in bomb shelters (防空洞) to get cool air. The city went through a big heat wave. The highest temperature reached43. 4℃! Some hydro-power (水电) stations in Sichuan Province are short of water and can't produce enough electricity. ▲ You may have recently heard the word "thermoplegia (热射病)". Many deaths are reported to be caused by it this summer. Thermoplegia is the most serious level of sunstroke (中暑). If people stay in high temperatures for too long, the heat will damage their organs (器官) and make them feel sick, pass out or even die. Economic loss Global warming is affecting people's livelihoods. A farmer from Sichuan showed in a video that the grapes he grew have dried and become "raisins (葡萄干) because of high temperatures this summer. The loss could be around 300, 000 yuan. Some animal farms also face the danger of water shortage. |
We sat in a boat with dad, waiting for Ofai, who was swimming under water to look for beautiful shells. Suddenly, I saw Ofai waving his arms hard. Then I found a large fish moving after him. All at once, I was frightened and held my breath.
"A shark!" cried dad. An anxious expression crossed his face. We stared at dad and waited for him to take action.
The shark came near. We could see it was yellow brown and as big as our boat. What could we do to help Ofai? He'd been under water for more than an hour. So by now, he must be very tired and it was difficult for him to swim fast enough to get out of the trouble.
Dad couldn't stand it any longer. Without delay, he took his knife and jumped into the water.
Down he went after the man -eating fish, who was heading straight for Ofai. Then, suddenly, the shark turned—for dad's strong arm had sent the knife deep into the side of the great fish. The water turned red as blood ran from the shark.
Now Ofai had time to reach the top. Soon, he was safe in the boat! But the shark was quite annoyed! It turned to attack the man who had deeply offended (冒犯) it. As it opened its great mouth towards dad, again, the knife went forward. This time, it cut deep into the shark's nose!
For a minute, the shark lay still. So dad has able to swim to the top. Ofai quickly pulled him into the boat. It wasn't long before the shark came to life. It hit the boat with such a hard blow that the sides were almost pushed in!
We rowed as hard as possible. Finally, we were safe on the seashore. That day, I truly saw the power of dad's courage!
Scientists from the Ohio State University have found that people are able to tell other people's emotions (情绪) according to changes in the color of their faces, the Guardian reported.
Scientists studied pictures of people's facial expressions. They found that every facial expression has a unique color pattern (模式). For example, happiness makes our faces red around the cheeks (脸颊) and temples (太阳穴) and a little blue around the chin (下巴). Hate creates a blue-yellow color around the lips, but also a red-green color around the nose and forehead.
"We believe these color patterns are because of small changes in blood flow triggered (触发) by the central nervous system (神经系统)" lead researcher Alex Martinez told the Guardian.
That's why there are some Chinese sayings that connect emotions to the color of one's face. For example, when two people are heatedly arguing over something, we say they are red in the face. When a person is very angry, we'd say he or she is blue in the face.
