Most people in their 80s like to enjoy life, but Zhao Yafu doesn't. He 1 working on the farm. He is a good example in China's poverty alleviation fight(脱贫攻坚战).
Born in 1941, Zhao's childhood dream was to become a reporter. 2 the natural disasters in the late 1950s changed his mind. Zhao saw how 3 people lived. So, he decided to do something to help.
Actually Zhao's first try did not go according to 4 plan. Only two farmers came when he gave his first5 They looked at him doubtfully(怀疑地)because they think it is 6 for them. One of them, Du Zhongzhi, used the way that Zhao taught and tried a new 7 type, but he was laughed at by others. When Du wanted to 8 , Zhao encouraged him to hold on. 9 people's surprise, Du's new rice type was successful. It tasted better and was sold at a higher price. From then on, more and more people came to his classroom.
Zhao helped farmers to grow some other plants to make more money. The villagers came to understand that Zhao really wanted to keep them away from poverty. They were10 to him.
Lily always wanted to be the top student in her class, whether it's in exams or different competitions. Her parents always praised her achievements.
One day, Lily took part in an art competition and put her heart into creating a beautifulpainting. However, she did not win the competition. Lily ran to the school garden and sat under a big tree. Her art teacher, Annie, noticed her disappointment, then sat next to Lily and said, "art is a way of expressing yourself, not just for winning competitions, Happiness comes from your love for art, not just the outcome."
Lily did not understand at the beginning. But later, she knew what Annie meant. She paid more attention to the process of creating art. She began expressing her emotions(情感)on the paper, not just to meet her parents'expectations. As time went by, Lily's artworks became more colourful and creative. Though she didn't win competitions, she discovered more joy in art and creativity. Her parents noticed the change and started caring more about her happiness than just her grades from then on.

There is lots of garbage (垃圾) in the Pacific Ocean around the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), which is located halfway between Japan and California (加利福尼亚州). However, how can this be cleaned up in such a big ocean?
A man named Boyan Slat took a swimming trip to Greece (希腊) when he was 16. The young man was shocked to see more plastic waste than fish in the ocean and decided to do something about it. That's how the Ocean Cleanup got its start in 2013.
Slat's group cleans up the GPGP using a floating (浮动的) plastic tube (管). The tube will go around the garbage and catch it. The plastic tube is 600 meters long. A big screen hangs down from it, about three meters into the water. Wind and waves will push the garbage towards the tube (fish can swim under the screen). Ships will pick up the garbage and take it back to the land to sort (分类) and reuse it.
The GPGP has about 1. 8 trillion (万亿) pieces of garbage. Most of it is plastic, like bottles and bags. Plastic garbage is very bad for birds and fish. They may get trapped or eat the plastic waste and then become sick or even die. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter our body through the seafood.
The Ocean Cleanup says it will be able to clean up half of the garbage in the GPGP within five years. If this first project works well, the Ocean Cleanup hopes to put as many as 60 more plastic tubes in the ocean. About 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. The purpose of the organization is to clean out 90 percent of the ocean plastic by 2040.

French people are the third-largest ethnic group (少数族裔) in Canada, with Chinese beings second and British being the majority (大多数). In the province of Quebec (魁北克省), where most French Canadians live, people mainly speak and write in French. Outside of Quebec, both English and French are used. All writing on Canadian products must be written in English and French. How did this come to be?
In the book The White and the Gold by Canadian author Thomas B Costain, I got my answer. The author explains the development of Canada in an interesting way with facts and real people's stories. As he describes, the French and the English both tried different ways to colonize (殖民于) Canada. The French encouraged their people to visit the new world with the promise of becoming rich. Many expected to return to France and enjoy an easy life with their new money. They just wanted to exchange goods with the natives (当地人) and didn't care about building the land into a big country.
The English way was very different. They would set up large cities and produce their own expensive goods. Instead of trading with the natives the British just brought so many people to the colonies (殖民地) that they could support themselves. When the two countries went to war, the British had over 40,000 soldiers, while the French only had 10,000.
On Canada's way to national independence (独立), the anger of the French Canadians continued to scare the British. Slowly, the treatment of French Canadians got better. Quebec was made to support French Canadian people: Laws were made to protect French culture and language inside Quebec, and French became an official (官方的) language of Canada. Government workers across Canada are required to speak both English and French. The French language is taught in every school, making sure that every Canadians has at least a basic understanding of French.
