Making invisible ink(隐形墨水) is a lot of fun. All you need is some common objects. |
What you'll need: ·Half a lemon ·Water ·Spoon ·Bowl ·White paper ·Cotton bud(棉签) ·Light bulb(电灯泡) |
Instructions: 1. Squeeze(挤) some lemon juice into the bowl and add a few drops of water. 2. Mix the water and lemon juice with the spoon. 3. Put the cotton bud into the mixture(混合液) and write a message onto the white paper. 4. Wait for the juice to dry so it becomes completely invisible. 5. When you are ready to read your secret message or show it to someone else, heat the paper by holding it close to a light bulb. |
What's happening? Lemon juice turns brown when heated. Putting some water in the lemon juice makes it very hard to notice when you put it on the paper. Other things which work in the same way include orange juice, honey, milk, onion juice and even more. |
Confucianism (儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants (五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues (美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people "What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others". It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors (祖先). While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one's parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious (和谐的) society: Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.

Why do We Yawn?
Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
Pound was a famous professor of Law College of Harvard. Although he was 80, he still worked eight hours every day no matter what the weather was like.
His workmate once said, "Though he was old, he kept on walking from his house to the office. It would take him an hour to do so, but he insisted (坚持) because it made him get a sense of success. I admired him. He not only made great achievements in his field, but also came up with creative teaching methods to inspire students."
One day, a student got out of the professor's office with a lot of books. He complained (抱怨), "He always answers my questions with just a yes or ①____. At the same time, he always gives me too many books and advises me to read them again and again. I have to spend plenty of time ②____ the answers on my own."
By accident, the professor knew what the student complained about. He explained to him patiently. "This is the method I have learnt—the harder you work independently, the better solutions you will get. If you can make full use of the books, you will probably become a good lawyer." He believed "Teaching people to fish is better than giving them fish".
Ten years later, the student became a well-known lawyer. When he returned to Law College of Harvard, he met the professor again. He thanked the professor. Besides, he gave away many books to Harvard.

If you can put the books to good use, perhaps you will be a good lawyer.

Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks are caught and in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
Environmental protection around the world, such as WildAid and the WWF, are teaching the public about "finning". They have even asked governments to develop laws to stop the sale of shark fins. So , no scientific studies have shown that shark fins are good for health, so why eat them? Help save the sharks!
