Husband: Hi, honey! You look very happy. Why?
Wife: And I find my job is more interesting than before.
Husband: Sounds great!
Wife: Yes. But now I have realized I shouldn't judge (判断) students only by grades, or both teachers and students are unhappy.
Husband: Right! We shouldn't pay too much attention to grades.
Wife: I agree. Praise and encouragement can build up children's confidence. It is very important for them.
Husband: I totally agree with you.
Wife: By bringing up our lite daughter Lily. I have come to know we should be patient and learn to wait.
Husband: Exactly. Every kid is like a flower and sooner or later they will have their own bloom (开花) seasons.
Wife: Um... everyone has his strong points.
Husband: Anyway, I'm glad that you have such ideas. Our education is on the way to get better.
A.Why have you changed a lot? B.How have you changed so much? C.I remember you used to complain (抱怨) about your students. D.I feel my students are lovelier and lovelier now. E.Kids need more praise and encouragement. F.And our society needs different kinds of talents. |
There was a school teacher called Mrs Thompson. At first, she didn't like her student Teddy Stoddard 1 he didn't get along well with other students. He was always so dirty that he always needed a 2 .
Later Mrs Thompson got to know that Teddy was 3 a very good boy before his mother died. She was ashamed (惭愧的) of herself. She felt even 4 when, like all her other students, Teddy bought her a Christmas present, too.
Mrs Thompson 5 to pay much attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he 6 . By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the 7 children in the class.
Three years later, Mrs Thompson got a letter from Teddy. He said he had already 8 his high school and planned to go to college next. But in 9 eyes, Mrs Thompson was always his best teacher. Mrs Thompson got two more 10 from him with the last signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M.D.The 11 doesn't end. On his wedding (婚礼) day, Dr Stoddard said to Mrs Thompson, "Thank you so much for making me feel 12 and showing me that I could also 13 ." Mrs Thompson, with tears (眼泪) in her eyes, replied, "Teddy, you're 14 . In fact, you were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to 15 until I met you. "
Family education plays a big role in one's life. Good parents will greatly influence their children. Our group wants to know what great values teenagers learn from their parents and how often they communicate with their parents. So a survey was made among 1,000 students in our school including the first, second and third students. Here are the diagrams showing the results.
Family is the first classroom for teenagers, and parents are their first teachers. The character and habits that teenagers develop have a lot to do with their parents. Parents should pay attention to their words and acts because teenagers will follow parents' behavior. Parents should serve as role models for their teenage children. They should show positive behavior (积极行为), such as kindness, honesty, and respect, which their children can learn from them. By setting a good example, parents can help shape their children's character and habits in a positive way.
For thousands of years, people have lived with dogs. Ancient paintings on the walls of caves (岩洞) show people living with dogs. More than one third of homes in the United States, Canada, and Australian have dogs. Almost one fourth of the homes in England have dogs. In each country, these dogs come in all shapes and sizes.
The largest dog in the world was Zorba, a huge mastiff (大驯犬) that died in 1990. When Zorba was seven years old in 1989, he was 94 centimeters tall. In other words, Zorba was more half as tall as an adult man. At his largest, Zorba weighed more than 156 kilograms.
While the smallest dog ever only 6 centimeters tall and just under 9 centimeters from nose to tail. The dog weighed half as much as your English book, and even a young child could easily pick it up with one hand. It died in 1945 when it was only two years old.
Some dogs are unusual, not for their size, but for their brain. One unbelievable dog is Endal, the "family member" of a man named Allen Parton, who has used a wheelchair (轮椅) since a car accident in 1991.
In 2001, Parton was hit by a car while crossing a road with Endal, and thrown out of his chair. Endal quickly moved Parton into the safe position, covered him with a coat, and pushed his mobile phone close enough for him to reach. Then, once he saw that Parton was all right, Endal ran back and forth between a nearby hotel and Parton, barking until people came out to help.
Endal won a prize for his courage and cleverness, and he has been the subject of a number of TV documentaries.
Driving coaches might soon be replaced (代替) by AI in the near future. A company in China has developed an AI-powered driving coach called Robo Coach, and it's already being used in some driving schools.
Robo Coach is not a human-like robot that sits next to you and complains (抱怨) about your driving skills. The AI driving coach developed by Beijing Yi Jia Jia Technology is actually a teaching and safety control system. The other ways in which Robo Coach are different from human driving coaches are even funnier, though. Robo Coach will call you "mommy" or "daddy".
Robo Coach has more than 40 different sensors (传感器) on the car to notice people, other cars and roads. Robo Coach uses sensors to stop if the car runs into something or increases speed suddenly for no reason, similar to how self-driving cars work.
It communicates with learners and helps decision making and instructions. And to make faster decisions, the car is also provided with radar (雷达) systems. The system isn't just keeping new drivers from meeting accidents. It also collects information on their driving behaviors and even body positions. It studies these driving habits in real time to see if the learner is too traditional or easy to be angry during practice and then changes its teaching style. By recording all the problems a learner runs into during lessons, the system tries to help the new driver correct past mistakes and prevent new ones.
Robo Coach is now being used in 5 driving schools owned by Yi Jia Jia Technology as well as 22 other driving schools across China.
Rainforests (热带雨林) cover six percent of the earth's surface. There are rain forests in many parts of theworld, but the biggest forests are in South America, Africa and South East Asia. There aren't any rain forests in Europe or North America.
About 75% of all the types of animals come from rainforests. There are many beautiful birds, insects and reptiles (爬行动物). Many of them live in the trees, over 30 meters from the ground. There are also thousands of different plants —and lots of them are tall trees! It is always hot in a rainforest and the ground is always wet. .
The rain forests are very important for us. We need them! The trees and other plants in the forest help to make the air that we breathe. They give us wood, rubber, fruits and many of our medicines.
For example, many years ago there was a large rainforest in Java (爪哇岛, 位于印尼). There were thousands of different plants and animals in the forest, but now there is nothing. People cut down the trees because they wanted to grow rice. They also wanted to grow rubber trees to make rubber. Many animals lived in the rainforest. Some of them went to other parts of Java, but many of them disappeared—forever. The rain forests are in danger!
A.It is also very dark there. B.They also help to control the weather. C.Thousands and thousands of animals live in rainforests. D.Unluckily, in many places, the rainforests are in danger. E.The same thing is happening now in many other parts of the world. |
If you could choose, would you rather be a genius (天才) or a common person? This was the question our teacher asked us after we watched a movie called Gifted. In the movie, a girl named Mary shows amazing mathematical talent at the age of 7 and feels bored school. Her uncle Frank thinks that she should stay in her normal school. However, Mary's grandmother Evelyn believes that Mary is a genius who should be taught specially in mathematics.
The reason for their argument comes from Frank's sister. She too was a promising mathematician, but killed herself when Mary was six months old. She suffered from Evelyn's push throughout her life. Frank doesn't want the same thing to happen to Mary. After many talks and fights, Mary goes to stay with Frank and takes college-level courses while playing with kids her own age.
The story of this movie is simple, but the theme it ties to express is very controversial (有争议的). We can't say that Evelyn-style education is wrong. It can help gifted children to show their potential (潜力) the most. But a natural gift can sometimes be a kind of stress, as it can make children feel too different from kids their own age. Too much attention to their talent can make them feel lonely in the society and lead to mental health problems. Many historical geniuses, including English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton and English writer Virginia Woolf, had similar problems. I'm glad that by the end of the movie, Mary finds a way to balance her talent and her childhood.
Dear Patrick,
How are you? It (be) three months since you moved to Shanghai with your family. I miss you very much and I hope you have settled well in your new school.
my sister and I are busy in school. My sister has worked hard on her training since January. She will have a swimming competition. As for me, I have joined the Outdoor Adventure Club. I am busy learning how (put) up tents. I can even climb rock walls now!
This year, a new student (call) Liu Tao comes to our class. I am his buddy. He is lovely and shy boy. At lunchtime, I often help Liu Tao buy food. he seldom talks with other students, he often asks me to tell him stories during the break time. I think I can share some with him by (read) all kinds of stories in my free time. Even if we sometimes have different opinions on something, we are still good friends and we talk about everything.
I have learned to be (patient) than before after being a buddy. I (true) want to be a buddy again next year. I am very happy to make friends with others!
Best wished to you!
Yours,
Jack
